[SHOT 2018] Shooting For Women Alliance Turn Self-Defense Taboos into Life Saving Tools

Shooting for Women Alliance had me at the tagline, “It’s not about pink. It’s about you”!

Founders Susan and Jim Rexrode say that “SFWA is designed to help bring together the efforts of women and youth organizations in varied shooting venues. SFWA gives professionals and novices alike a forum to share information and communicate with each other. Participants can also locate products and services for “the softer side of shooting.””

Several years ago, Susan Rexrode was held hostage in her own home for over 5 hours. The same man would continue to stalk her for another 2 years after the ordeal.

Her story is absolutely amazing and horrifying to read.

However, Susan began Shooting for Women Alliance because she saw how many women were interested in the sport of shooting. Equally popular were women’s personal protection, and shooting attire. However, at the time, nothing was available.

    Citizen Elite

“Citizen Elite” is a program designed to take the idea of self-defense to ANY location capable of holding meetings (Curves, Realtor offices, etc). SFWA has chosen to focus on “Citizen Elite” for upcoming training exercises and classes.

The idea behind “Citizen Elite” is to take the spotlight off the “weapon” in self-defense. Rather, the term “life saving tool” is used to better communicate with women who may not be as open to the idea of the use of a firearm for personal protection.

“Citizen Elite” offers both lethal and non-lethal options. Several video-based scenarios (some of which are realistically graphic) are available to mimic the atmosphere needed to train properly.

    What Women Want

SFWA offers a variety of other classes as well! “What Women Want” actually explains the basics of handguns. Attendees get assistance with proper FIT of the firearm to their hand.

SFWA staff explained, “you aren’t buying a pillow. The gun isn’t supposed to feel COMFORTABLE in your hand. It’s supposed to fit properly – that’s what we do.”
