Even though today is officially the tenth day of TFB Christmas, I wanted to make sure to recognize the last night of Hanukkah for our Jewish readers and shooters around the world. If I had thought of it, I would have made today the “illumination” part of the series – bringing much needed light to the dark winter days of the northern hemisphere. Instead, today is arbitrarily all about Rifle Silencers.
Rifle silencers are a bit of a misnomer for supersonic rounds – suppression levels are usually only good enough to prevent pain and hearing damage. With quality subsonic ammunition, however, the enjoyment level increases with every pull of the trigger.

Discreet Ballistics 300BLK Subsonic Target Ammunition – $23
The Discreet Ballistics 300 Blackout 190gr Subsonic Target Load is intended for use in semi-automatic and bolt action firearms chambered in 300 AAC Blackout. This round has been thoroughly tested to function in both pistol and carbine length gas systems. Discreet Ballistics gives its customers the option of choosing these loads for use in 16″ barrels or 7-11” barrels.
300 AAC Blackout is typically chambered in platforms with barrel lengths ranging from 7” to 16”. Until recently, any commercially available ammunition had only been available in one load for each extreme in barrel length. What this means is that 300 Blackout ammunition that is designed to have a muzzle velocity of 1050FPS out of a standard 16” rifle barrel will often have a 950fps or less out of a 7” pistol/SBR barrel. At 100 yards this can result in as much as a 200fps drop making it more difficult for the shooter to get on target. Discreet Ballistics offers its 300 AAC Blackout ammunition in either pistol/SBR (7-11”) or rifle (16”) barrel loads so that velocity is consistently in the 1050fps range no matter which platform the shooter is using.

Surefire SOCOM 300 SPS – $1079
Initially introduced in early 2015, the SOCOM2 suppressors have minimal increase in capability than that of the SOCOM option, and have had a significant increase in production capability. Now when using computer controlled laser welding there is a significant decrease in production cycle-time, thus a reduction in cost, which has been passed along to the end-user offering the best suppressor product available at a lesser price.
The SOCOM2 suppressors continue to be constructed of advanced high-temperature alloys and stainless steel featuring a redesigned internal venting system to additionally reduce back pressure and in some cases a further reduction in sound attenuation. Ascetically the visual difference of the SOCOM2 suppressors is a new recessed end cap.
There is no change in suppressor adapter attachment between the SOCOM and SOCOM2 suppressors. The SOCOM 3-Prong Flash Hider, Muzzle Brake and WARCOMP option adapters are designed for use with weapons system from carbine through machine gun variants.
Like all SureFire SOCOM Fast-Attach models, the SOCOM2 produces minimal consistent shift in impact, if at all, compared to that of the unsuppressed weapon. As always SureFire suppressors are designed and manufactured in the USA.
Thunder Beast Arms Ultra 5 – $945
