We shoot Fiocchi .357mag 125gr XTP ammunition from a S&W Model 13L with a 4″ barrel and a Rossi M92 with a 16″ barrel into Clearballistics ballistic gel to measure velocity, penetration, expansion/fragmentation, and retained weight.

Your comment about trail defense is why I like XTPs. They seem fairly well balanced between expansion and penetration. Not really a bear round, but should get deeper into pissed off dog than most purely defensive rounds.
Those carbine results were sick! Reinforces my belief that the .357mag is really a carbine round, despite it's popularity in revolvers.
1420-1564 from the revolver, plus some surprising readings from earlier tests, does make me wonder if your Chrono couldn't use a tune-up....
125gr would not be anywhere near my first choice in trail defense. I'm going to agree with the post below. What's with the 177gr? I shoot 170 lead in my 357 Blackhawk but that is not what you are testing
