Hornady 300 Blackout Subsonic Ammunition
“Shhh… tell everyone!”
That’s how Hornady starts their marketing for their new 300 Blackout Subsonic Ammunition, and gives you a clue who might find an interest.
The bullet weight is 190 grains and “Sub-X” stands for Subsonic eXpanding.
Product Features – 300 Blackout Subsonic Ammunition
“Sub-X™ Bullet Technology
In addition to its patented Flex Tip, long grooves in the gilding metal jacket of the 190 gr Sub-X™ combine with the bullet’s flat profile to ensure expansion.
Proven Performance
Performance of 300 Blackout Subsonic meets or exceeds FBI Protocol terminal ballistic test requirements. Impact velocity of 1,020 fps into ballistic gelatin provides 16-18” penetration and 90%+ weight retention.
Silent and Stealthy
Hornady® Subsonic Ammunition doesn’t have the loud report of a supersonic round, and paired with a suppressor, it’s even quieter. Unique powders optimized for subsonic use result in a low flash signature, ideal for either suppressed or unsuppressed performance.”
Below: A detailed picture of the bullet design and cartridge, with gun powder and primer. Polymer tip, boat tail design. The Sub-X bullet features a lead core and a cannelure for a positive case crimp, optimized for use in semi-automatic rifles.
According to Hornady this cartridge will meet or exceed the FBI Protocol terminal ballistic test requirements.
The BC is .437 (G1).

$1.15 a round.
I think I can do handloads for about 50 cents a round with Sierra Gameking 200gr. SBT at 39 cents a round.
I have plenty of 300BLK brass. Powder and primer comes to about 10 cents a round, give or take.
I wish 300 blk ammo manufacturers would provided the ballistics data using, say, an 8" barrel instead of 16".
If i were using a 16" barrel i would be shooting 308 or 556.
