40mm Gel Rounds from Defense Technology

Military and law enforcement organizations have an ongoing need for improved less lethal munitions to subdue violent people. The 37mm and 40mm launchers are one area that has seen improvement and innovation in recent years – both with the design of the launchers and with the munitions available. Defense Technology, a brand under the Safariland Group umbrella, announced a new 40mm munition that it believes is “highly effective” with “greater energy and delivered energy” than competing products.

Called the Blunt Impact Projectile (BIP) Collapsible Gel round, the new munition has a nose that is designed to collapse upon striking a target. The nose cone can deliver one of several payloads including oleoresin capsicum (aka OC or pepper spray), 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (aka CS or tear gas), marking powder, marking liquid or an inert powder. The marking powder and marking liquid are temporary colorings that will remain on skin and clothing for up to 24 hours.

According to Defense Technology, the round is propelled by smokeless powder and offers consistent energy delivery across a wide range of distances. The company states the rounds are “point of aim, point of impact” munitions.

Defense Technology offers other munitions and less lethal tools including o.c. sprays, distraction devices (aka flash-bangs) and launchers. The company’s launchers are manufactured to its specifications by Lewis Machine & Tool (LMT).
