Hawke Sports Optics announced a new 3-9×40 scope with a reticle designed specifically for shotguns and muzzleloading rifles. The reticle is illuminated and has an adjustable, step-less brightness control. Eye relief is 4.5″.

According to Hawke:

The new Slug Gun SR reticle has been designed to calibrate to the trajectory of shotgun and muzzleloader slugs fired between 1,300 and 1,800 fps. The reticle provides three chevron aimpoints for 100, 150, and 200 yards, taking the guesswork out of long shots with shotguns and muzzleloaders.

Using the same innovative design technology that Hawke has made famous in crossbow reticles, the Slug Gun SR reticle allows the shooter to calibrate the ballistics profile of their load combination to the reticle in the scope. Simply sight the gun in at 100 yards on 6X. Once sighted in, move the target to 150 yards, and shoot a group. If the groups are high, adjust the magnification up in half-power increments, if low, adjust magnification down in half-power increments. Use this magnification adjustment to fine-tune the vertical adjustment until the groups are impacting the target at the point of aim. The scope is now calibrated to this individual combination out to 200 yards.

The scope uses multi-coated lenses, and is fogproof, shockproof and waterproof. Hawke states the scopes with the new reticles are shipping now. The MSRP is $239.

*sigh* Another "one trajectory fits all" ballistic reticle...

Hawke Optics have produced some really capable, reliable, solidly-made and cost-efficient scopes over the years that have been either overlooked or under-estimated by most shooters.

I like the sighting and zeroing procedure for this new scope --- a straightforward, simple, no-frills approach in keeping with the weapons it is intended for, and at an affordable price point.

The 4.5" eye relief is also a nice feature, especially given the recoil of shotguns and muzzle loaders.
