Gun Songs

Ed Friedman @ Tell Me Why? has compiled a list of his favorite gun songs.

I looked through my music and found very little that had anything to do with or even mention guns. If you have any favorites post them in comments at his blog.

50 Foot Snowball Launcher

Picture 12-15

Sold by Hammacher Schlemmer

This toy blaster makes and launches softball-sized snowballs up to 50′, allowing rapid, long-range assaults during neighborhood snowball confrontations. Simply place snow in the forming chamber and close the lid, and it packs three perfectly spherical snowballs. To blast your mark, place one snowball in the muzzle, aim the launcher, and pull back the slingshot mechanism. Because the blaster is powered by elastomers instead of batteries, it provides uninterrupted, fast-action play. Made of durable, cold-resistant plastic. Includes targets for shooting practice. Ages 8 and up. 17 1/2″ L x 5 1/2″ W x 12″ H. (2 1/2 lbs.)

It just needs a laser :)

Gun O’Clock Laser Target Alarm Clock

47059 Gun O’Clock Laser Target Alarm Clock photo

The Gun O’ Clock is an alarm clock that has to be shot in the bullseye with a toy laser gun to be turned off.

I love the idea. This is just what I need. I *often* turn my alarm clock off while still mostly asleep and then wake up late.

Wanted Movie posters “glamorize violence” in UK

From BBC News:

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled that the posters were not suitable to be seen by children.

It added that the use of a glamorous actress, gun images and aspirational text “could glamorize violence”.

It seems they can’t stop at banning guns, they need to ban photos of them as well.

Buns and Guns takeaway

A military/guns themed eatery in Lebanon called Buns and Guns

 Photos Uncategorized 2008 06 30 Bunsguns2
Photo from LA Times Blog

The slogan of the restaurant — “Sandwiches Can Kill You” — is displayed at the entrance with the photo of a hamburger with a pistol sticking between the buns.

The eatery, which looks like a military outpost, was designed to be an unconventional hangout but it also resonates because of recent armed clashes in Beirut and the many tanks and military troops deployed here in the capital. The restaurant is located in a crowded street of Dahiyeh, Beirut’s southern suburb and a Hezbollah stronghold that was the scene of heavy airstrikes during the militant group’s 2006 war with Israel.

Pathetic in my opinion.

What is a Saiga?

Answer…

1) AK pattern rifles and shotguns made at Izhevsk

Saiga-12 Small

2) The ugliest antelope alive

Saiga
The Russians are not know for producing beautiful firearms, but you would have thought they would have chosen a nicer looking animal than the Saiga for which to brand sporting firearms!

From Wikipedia

The Saiga (Saiga tatarica) is an antelope which originally inhabited a vast area of the Eurasian steppe zone from the foothils of the Carpathians and Caucasus into Dzungaria and Mongolia. Today they are found only in a few areas in Kalmykia (Russia), Kazakhstan, and western Mongolia.

The Saiga typically stands 0.6-0.8 meters at the shoulder and weighs between 36 and 63 kg. Their lifespan ranges from 6 to 10 years. Males are bigger than females and are the only sex to carry horns. The horns have some value as Chinese traditional medicine and for that reason Saiga are now endangered by poaching. The Saiga is recognizable by an extremely unusual, over-sized, and flexible, nose structure. The nose is supposed to warm up the air in winter and filters out the dust in summer.

Photos of rapper’s illegal firearms

Federal agents said Monday that these guns were found in T.I.’s home. The rapper, whose real name is Clifford Harris Jr.. was arrested over the weekend on federal weapons charges. He was ordered to remain in custody at least until Friday.

The machine guns: two mac-10’s and one MP5K, with suppressors:

High cap magazines seem to be in fashion

The firearm in the middle of the above photo appears to be a Calico 9mm LIBERTY III pistol with the distinctive 50 (or 100) round magazine that sits on top.

Microsoft Gun Club

I was not aware that Microsoft employees had their own gun club until SayUncle pointed it out in a comment on his blog!
Title
Apparently they are quite active. In 2000 they donated at least $100,000 to the NRA. Microsoft matched the employee contribution.

From The NRA Foundation:

The Microsoft Gun Club Endowment in 2000 through individual contributions from members of the Microsoft Gun Club. This endowment was established to support training programs for young shooters. Club members’ gifts to this endowment are matched dollar for dollar by the Microsoft Corporation.

The founder and Chairman (soon to be ex-Chairman) Bill Gates is apparently anti-gun and pro gun control!

From ‘Is Bill Gates a closet liberal?‘ :

In 1997, Bill Gates contributed $35,000 in support of a Washington state ballot initiative supporting gun control.

It should be noted that it is Microsoft policy to match donations made by employees to charities. From Microsoft.com:

Charitable donations are matched by Microsoft, up to $12,000 per year.

Gun Control in Burma

An interesting although unsurprising article about gun law in Burma (Myanmar):

A 1951 law bans possession of automatic weapons, grenades, and explosives with the intent to commit high treason. A rather narrowly-tailored law, at first glance.

However, the law states that the President can by decree add “any other arms or ammunition” to the banned list. And any person with a banned weapon is presumed guilty of intending to commit high treason, and required to prove his innocence:

Same old story. Those without arms are oppressed. Continue reading here.
