Do Pistol Disarms Actually Work? UF Pro Investigates.

Ah, disarm videos. The Rex Kwon Do of YouTube:

It seems like most or all disarm videos are unrealistic, choreographed middle-aged-man LARPing. In other words, they are great for a laugh – my favorite disarm video analysis typically comes from everydaynodaysoff.com (click through for my favorite disarm vid).

UF Pro is an excellent Slovenian tactical apparel design company.

So when I saw that the Slovenian tactical clothing gurus at UF Pro uploaded a video on the subject of disarms I was a little…disarmed. I was worried that one of my favorite apparel companies was about to add more fuel to the cringefest dumpster fire that is YouTube gun-jerking vids.

But fortunately, this may be one of the best videos I’ve seen on the subject – and not because it’s accidentally humorous. In fact, it a well-produced piece (as with most of UF Pro’s content) that puts the pistol-yanking concept to the test.  The video’s terse description explains:

Can you disarm an attacker when threatened with a handgun? What are the odds of survival? We tested this with two spec ops veterans and a Zero REX 1 FX handgun. See the results for yourself.

Basically, the video shows an unarmed victim and an attacker with a simunition Rex Zero 1 (speaking of quality Slovenian exports…) in a series of positions, and the victim attempts to take the gun away from the attacker without getting shot in the face. I don’t know what the precise test parameters were, but it looked like a genuine exercise. If anything, I would imagine that the odds were stacked in the threat’s favor as he’s anticipating that the “victim” is about to lunge at him. (We are ignoring that maybe having a gun within arms reach of someone who can grab it might be a bad idea at the outset.)

If you watch the video, the main takeaways seem to be that attempting to take a loaded gun away from your attacker’s hand is not easy, and your odds of success are not as good as the Instagram senseis might have you believe. But on the other hand, the video seems to show that, if you are absolutely positive your skull is about to go from coupe to convertible, you may have a fighting chance if your attacker is close enough to you. On top of that, you better hope that your attacker is using a pistol with a double action trigger. Watch the video and you’ll see what I mean.

    Thoughts?
