I think we are observing a growing trend here. Only within the last couple of weeks, we saw at least two new pistol standoff devices hitting the market (click here and here to read about them). Today we are looking at another such device made by DTF Industries and called SAFE Space. SAFE stands for Side Arm Failsafe Extension.

As in the case of other standoff devices, this one is also designed to provide a frame mounted barrier in front of the slide that will prevent the pistol from being driven out of battery when it is pressed against objects. Here is how DTF Industries describes the function of this device:

The SAFE Space Device was specially designed for law enforcement officers, private security personnel, and civilians with concealed carry firearm permits who may need to discharge their firearms in close quarters or direct contact situations where muzzle-induced out-of-battery malfunctions may occur. Dramatically reducing or even eliminating the possibility of out-of-battery malfunctions in semi-automatic pistols will save countless law enforcement officer lives and private citizen lives when they are left with no option other than discharging contact shots in a struggle with assailant.

Following two videos also explain the reason they designed this device and the way it works.

DTF Industries SAFE Space standoff device is made in the USA. It is CNC machined out of 7075-T6 aluminum and has a mil-spec Type III Class 2 hard coat anodized finish. In order to install this device, you need to slide it onto the pistol rail then insert the separate lug and tighten it in place via the four screws.

Right now the SAFE Space device is available for Glock 17/22 and Glock 19/23 pistols. Regardless of the pistol model, the price is $100. There is also an option to purchase it in combination with a Kydex OWB holster designed to fit this device. The standoff device/holster combo costs $175.

The company also develops SAFE Space standoff devices for other pistol models, too. Here is the list of pistols that they are planning to make such devices for.

Coming Soon: Smith and Wesson M&P9/40 4”, Sig Sauer P320 X-Carry, Sig Sauer P320 Compact, Sig Sauer P226, Springfield Armory XD 4” Service, Springfield Armory XD Mod.2 4” Service, Springfield Armory 1911 TRP Operator, and Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded.

Overall, this standoff device looks to be a fairly compact and slimline one. I personally like the idea of having a rail under the standoff device. It would also be a good feature if there was a toolless quick detach mechanism because you have to remove these devices to be able to disassemble the pistol. The Proof Mark MSD did have such feature, however, I think the best solution would be a quick detach mechanism that would allow removing the device even when a light or laser is mounted on it.
