What is a wildcat cartridge?

A wildcat cartridge, often shortened to wildcat, is a custom cartridge for which ammunition and/or firearms are not mass-produced. These cartridges are often created in order to optimize a certain performance characteristic (such as the power, size or efficiency) of an existing commercial cartridge.

Developing and using wildcat cartridges does not generally serve a purpose in military or law enforcement; it is more a hobby for serious shooting, hunting, gunsmithing and handloading enthusiasts, particularly in the United States. There are potentially endless varieties of wildcat cartridge: one source of gunsmithing equipment has a library of over 6,000 different wildcat cartridges for which they produce equipment such as chamber reamers. It’s called the 50 Krater and it’s for the AR10 Platform. It utilizes the 300 RUM as the parent case and most any 500 S&W or 50AE bullets. It has a case capacity of 91.0gr of H2O and we are loading with the RL7 at the moment with really solid velocities.

A Hornaday 300gr FTX will see about 2650 fps using about 68.5gr of powder out of the 2.20 case. It uses the standard ASC 308 mags with a slightly modified follower and tabs. We also have developed a way to do some custom head stamped brass and thus we are setting it to run the new brass with the 50 Krater and our Red Stag brand of ammunition.
