In the past, OSS Suppressors has taken their fair share of heat and pressure (see that) for their unique designs, multi-generation models, price points and mounting systems. And honestly I have contributed to the criticism. Until recently, previous models featured two module sections and over-barrel mounts that required specific rifle setups. However, I spent a good amount of time with the OSS crew today talking about their new HELIX-QD mounting system and OSS’s path going forward, and I think they have a new fan.

First up, the HELIX-QD mount is a return to a more traditional threaded muzzle brake with a tapered bearing surface to keep expanding gases where they belong. The brake itself threads on to the barrel with standard threads, but the silencer utilizes left hand threads to prevent it from twisting off under fire. The added benefit is that the reverse threads won’t unloosen the brake when removing the silencer. The mount also tightens up nicely and stays firmly in place. I think OSS has a winner in the HELIX-QD – simple and solid.

The new silencers come in three versions: a 5.56K, 7.62 and the Ti Magnum, all of which now sport a round outer tube instead of the hexagonal sleeve on previous versions. The change in form factor reduces both cost and manufacturing complexity.

As for the company itself, I got a real positive vibe from the OSS team. They openly talked about having some miss steps with previous employees/management during product development. The new rifle suppressors are here to stay for the foreseeable future, avoiding generation creep, while OSS engineers continue work on a rimfire and pistol line of silencers due out in the near future.

I can see myself owning an OSS Suppressor, which is something I haven’t said in the past.

OSS Introduces New HELIX-QD Suppressor Line

• HX-QD Magnum Ti: a short, lightweight and durable suppressor for large bore rifles – ideal for most .30 caliber platforms. With a fully welded Grade 5 titanium body and heat treated 17-4 stainless steel and Grade 5 titanium internals, the HX-QD Magnum Ti is full-auto rated for 5.56, and delivers hearing safe suppression from 5.56 (sub-133 dB) to .338 (sub-139 dB) — no other .338 suppressor is this versatile.  MSRP is $1599.
