FN Announces Mandatory Recall of M249S Rifles

One of the more interesting new gun announcements of 2016 was the M249S rifle from FN America. The gun was a semi-automatic rifle version of the M249 light machine gun (aka squad automatic weapon or SAW.)

Unfortunately, the M249S is now being recalled by FN America. The recall applies to both standard and Para configurations of the rifle within certain serial number ranges.

According to FN America, the company recently identified a design issue within the hammer group of the rifle that can affect reliability. The company explained that “under certain circumstances, a reset failure within the hammer group may cause the M249S to cease function [and cause] an unsafe firing event.”

FN American instructs all owners to discontinue use of the rifles and return them for installation of a new hammer group.

The company states the update will be done free of charge. The company is providing shipping boxes and labels for returning the guns back for repair. FN America states that it is making “every effort to return the [affected M249S] back to customers within 30 days of receipt.
