NEXGEN² Defense MZLMAX Muzzle Device

Nexgen² Defense has designed an interesting muzzle device called MZLMAX. According to the manufacturer, it provides recoil mitigation, muzzle rise compensation and flash hiding – all in one package. It utilizes their AFD (Advanced Flow Dynamics), VFD (Vent Forward Design) technologies and 3D (Delay Diffuse and Direct) gas management principle. Too many abbreviations? Let’s watch the NG2’s video and see what they mean.

The ports look to be cut slightly at an angle, facing forward. That angle is probably just enough to redirect the gases forward and still allow it to work as a normal muzzle brake providing sufficient amount of recoil mitigation. I suppose cutting the ports at a sharper angle could not make it more effective because that could cause the opposite effect of the reactive muzzle devices.

The zigzag cuts between the ports are probably responsible for flash hiding. It would be interesting to see the flash hiding capabilities tested in low light or dark conditions.

If you are into AKs, you’ve probably noticed the similarity with cuts on some of the AK-74 muzzle devices (see the images below).

Overall, if MZLMAX does what it is advertised to do, then the engineers at Nexgen² Defense did a great job!

Nexgen² Defense MZLMAX muzzle device is made of stainless steel with black nitride finish. It is available either for .223 or .308 calibers. The MSRP is $189.95.
