8 Reasons the AR15 is Better than the Ruger Mini-14

In this episode of TFBTV, James serves up the counterpoint to his earlier video, “8 Reasons Why the Ruger Mini-14 is Better Than the AR15” (see it here: https://youtu.be/GIZALtOcMf0). In this video, James goes over 8 ways the AR15 simply outclasses the Ruger Mini-14, with plenty of footage and comparison of both! Plus more Terminator 2 clips.

  • Dougscamo

JUST 8? Come on, you can try harder that that!
Note: I did like the Mr. Rogers moment however….

    • Doug, forgot to reply on Patreon: Download the imgur app to your phone and upload pictures to it. You can then share them as links. Super-easy.

      • Dougscamo

Easy for you to say….down to 480 mb on my phone…
But thanks for thinking of me….(quietly sobbing)….
Was going to say “sniffs” but after the paper toilet seat covers comment I thought “better not”….

    • Edeco

Yep, should be more than 8. Guess as a lawyer it’s more important for him to take both sides than to be technically complete.

      • Dougscamo

Guess you’re right….but it would have been hilarious for the title to say…..”20 reasons why the AR15 is better than the Ruger Mini 14″….

        • iksnilol

*30 reasons the HiPoint 9-whatever is better than a Mini-14

          • Dougscamo

            HAHAHA…..

          • Gary Kirk

It’s almost wrong that that statement is true..

  • FLdeepdiver

So many LOL moments! Well done James.

  • Xtorin O’hern

what was the handguard on the first AR-15 in the accuracy clip?

    • An RRA split smooth/pic free float. I get a lot of compliments on it and I like it a lot in a DMR application, but it weighs a ton.

      • retfed

        “. . . [I]t weighs a ton.” Like, 29 ounces? Same as a Windicator?
Good video, but I would like one point clarified: How many times CAN you drink your own urine before it becomes toxic?
        Asking for a friend.

        • BigR

The “how many times you can drink your own urine” thing! I GOTS to know!!!!!!

  • John

Um, James, I’m afraid the “ButtPussie” is a variety of the French Parakeet that only eats the seeds of the “Butt” tree located in the South of France or, occasionally, Guam.

If you are going to throw around “nonsensical” insults, please make sure you did personal research…kind of like you did with the whole “fits better in the ass” thing. JK

    Keep up the great work!

    • TheNotoriousIUD

They may want to consider relocating from Guam….

      #fireandfurry

      • James Earl Jones

        #fearthefurry

    • I have to confess that I looked this up because it sounded plausible.

I’m surely not the first guy to say it, but the first time I used it was to describe someone who used the paper toilet seat cover thingies in the office. It has a good ring to it (pun).

      • Gary Kirk

Paper ass gaskets.. That’s the technical term..

        • Gary Kirk

Oh, and the technical term for the paper you use at the end of the deal is.. S#!+ tickets

        • Daniel

          Asskets.

    • BigR

John, I’ll have to agree with you.

  • Kivaari

    Correct.

  • TheNotoriousIUD
  • Tim

How about the bayonet lug on the ar is even less-unuseful than the bayonet lug on the mini-14?

    • BigR

      But, it looks good!!!!!!

  • Pete Sheppard

    Good video, James.
The internet would be so dull without gun snobs.

    • Thanks, Pete. I agree. A little carping and complaining can be fun when no one takes it too personally.

      • Pete Sheppard

A *little*…then some maturity goes a long way.

        • Dougscamo

          Nah….I’ll mature when I’m dead….

          • datimes

            Uh…ripen.

          • Dougscamo

            That too….

      • BigR

Whether we agree or disagree, talking guns is fun!

  • Vhyrus

Something something made by the lowest bidder.

    • Dougscamo

      “Barbie Dolls for guys”….

  • Matt B

I just realized you can now get an AR15 for $200 less than a WASR 10. Why would anyone not want to buy an AR15?

    Great video!

    • Dougscamo

“and a rebate for like 250 bucks and a case of ammo”….

      • Swarf

        Yeah, where’s that rebate?

        I’ll skip the foot massage.

        • Dougscamo

It’s got to be true….James R said it on the Internet….

  • Gary Kirk

No chance to watch at the moment.. 23 stories high, bout to wrangle a beam, waiting on crane.. But, if you think this’ll pull the sig thing off the Glock burner.. You’re off target, but at least it isn’t another 320 post.. And thanks for that..

    • Dougscamo

And they say texting while driving is dangerous! Sheesh!….

      • Gary Kirk

It’s real fun when you drop your shield, and someone decides to F#¢£ with you and shake the ladder.. Yes, ironworkers are this way..

  • 2wheels

I know the AR is better than the Mini in pretty much every way.

But dangit, I have so much more fun with a Mini. Mostly because it’s not an AR.

    • ShooterPatBob

I’m really bored with AR’s at this point.

      • retfed

        I’m with ya.
I’m perfectly prepared to accept the superiority of the AR platform and the polymer striker-fired pistol, but I’m so tired of them on the interwebs and in real life, I’m thinking of going Brown Bess and Harpers Ferry.

        • mazkact

I’m going with an 1841 Mississippi Rifle, I think there is something worthwhile about that percussion ignition stuff.

        • BigR

I’m not that tired of them!

      • BigR

Lately, I’ve been getting the hots for a Mini-14 or Mini-30, but I’m still keeping both my AR’s. All guns are like women, I can’t live without either of them!!!!

  • You could only come up with eight?

    • Dougscamo

      Yeah, right?

  • Bigbigpoopi

12 minutes of crap and no gratuitous nipple shots? Gaaay.

    • civilianaf

Ya I come here for the comments about your shorts man.

      • Porty1119

ALL TIGHT SHIRTS, ALL THE TIME!!!!

      • Dougscamo

Isn’t that a gratuitous ball sack shot?

  • UnrepentantLib

Maybe a dumb question: Have the patents on the Ruger Mini-14 expired yet? The manufacturing base for AR-15’s exploded when the patents expired. Is the Mini-14 still protected? Or do no other manufacturers see a reason to build their own variant?

    • Paul Epstein

Even if the patents are expired, that doesn’t mean it’s trivial to produce a parts compatible version. The AR-15’s whole technical data package was made available, and that doesn’t seem likely for the mini-14.

But let’s go beyond that, I can only see two ways manufacturers could make money off of reproducing it- foreign manufactured, very cheap versions that meet the import sporting requirement as is, and ultra high end US made boutique versions for people who for various reasons can’t stand ARs. Beater guns and near-custom setups. The problem with the ‘cheap’ versions is unlike, say, the SKS, there is no huge warehouse full of mini-14s for cheap, and there are no factories set up to produce it paid for by the government, so I really can’t see it being available for less than 500 even for a fairly low quality version. We don’t see M1 carbines coming in ultra cheaply, and the mini-14 isn’t any simpler or easier to build.

The high end stuff is going to suffer most of the same issues high end M1A’s do, because it’s so similar of an action. It’s going to be ludicrously expensive to get a very accurate gun because of all the skilled gunsmithing required, you’re still kind of at a disadvantage as far as magazines and mounting optics go, and there’s less of a cult following for the mini-14 compared to the M1A so you’re going to sell fewer models, period.

      • int19h

Where can one obtain the AR-15 whole technical data package?

    • BigR

      I never “thunka” that!!!!

  • .45

Awww… James thinks we’re “great friends.” I’m almost touched.

In any event, AR or Mini 14 doesn’t matter to me, I own an AK. I suppose that the AR vs AK debate has been done to death though, and I’m down with my not so ergonomic, relatively inaccurate Klash.

  • Karl Vanhooten

Com’ on, James, click-bait topic. You’re already wrung out all the lurkers, trolls, nitwits, and fanboys on the “reasons the Mini 14 is better than the AR.” Lets not do it again. The Mini and AR are apples and oranges. You’re better than this.

    • ShooterPatBob

      I think it’s fun.

  • Twilight sparkle

I feel like number 5 should go to the mini 14 https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b216b7c33ce0f24d5d4c85c29096f30d7824f64184736ea423a88fdf4726b029.jpg
I mean look at it have you ever seen an ar that awesome?

    • Porty1119

Fallout called, it wants its rifle back.

That is a slick-looking rig for sure.

    • iksnilol

That’s some of the most fuddly mall ninja bulls*** I’ve ever seen.

      Sweet Jesus.

    • Karl Vanhooten

Great set-up. Beautiful rifle. But in the bathroom…? 😀

      • Twilight sparkle

Lol it’s not my rifle, I’m just using it as inspiration for my gb mini

  • Joby

To be fair to the lowest bidder comment, totino’s pizza roll MREs would be pretty baller.

  • Scott Couch

Great video, the AR is an awesome weapon.

  • BeGe1

I like how he actually spent time thinking out which one actually would go in your ass better, and had valid rationale for his conclusion.

That’s the kinda stuff I like to see. Carry on.

    • Twilight sparkle

There’s always exceptions to the rule https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/63c01cde1380b921e8a5e1de41c0867849eed9d47c2f57144ffd268304b63acc.jpg I mean look at how thin the barrel is? And you don’t have much of a front sight to contend with.

      • BeGe1

True, that sight is nice and far back. That is one butt-friendly rifle right there. That’s quality research, good job.

I’m very proud of this community right now. It doesn’t matter what the challenge is, we can find a rifle to solve it.

        • BigR

Twilight & BeGe1, you guys are cracking me up!!!

  • derpmaster

I always run my hentai thru a fruit dehydrator. Eliminates the moisture for long term storage.

  • Jr.jr

How did hentai even make it in the video lol

    • Twilight sparkle

theres a magical place that can explain everything

  • civilianaf
  • Amplified Heat

    Two words: charging handle

Also, to the Mini’s credit, they were like half the price of an AR15 until 10 years ago, and even less than the then-cheaper AKs. Plus, owners got to avoid all the obnoxious ban nonsense during the Dark Ages, when 30rnd mags were going for NFA prices

  • ShooterPatBob

When that soft piano music started playing and you started speaking in a calm voice I just burst out laughing. Fabulous, James, just fabulous.
I especially love that people still miss the jokes of these videos, either by only reading the title or just missing the point entirely. Keep ’em coming, brother!

  • tomah57

Whom ever hired this penis puffer should be fired along with him. What he knows about firearms can be legibly written on the head of a needle with a felt tip marker. Listening to this hairball is worse than hearing nails being dragged across a chalkboard.

    • .45

I feel like this comment was specifically made to draw attention and get included in the next video…

    • BigR

      tomah57
Seems like you prefer penis’!! But, that’s just your preference!!! Everone else knows you cant write on the head of a needle with a felt tip marker!!!!

  • Rogertc1

The French Police use the Ruger Mini-14

    • Karl Vanhooten

Actually, despite resembling a Mini-14, the Mousqueton A.M.D. was developed for use by French government agencies. Yeah, it’s a Mini-14 by Ruger but has differences.

      https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/95f657611dbb8bc53c65b7f4b815e2f6e0a574edc93645626f9c22a80c9e82cb.jpg

      • Rogertc1

        A French Fry?
‘Something less obviously military than the FAMAS was desired, and the natural choice was the Ruger Mini-14, whose slightly civilian appearance is often considered to be one of its primary strengths. Ruger licensed the design to the French, who have assembled them in-country with a few changes from the normal production model. The guns come with rubber buttpads and sling cutouts in the stock, as well as a slightly modified style of charging handle. They remain chambered for the 5.56mm NATO cartridge (which as a military caliber is requires a license for civilian use in France). The fire control system has a selector to allow semiauto, 3-round burst, and full-auto fire, and the receiver heel is marked specifically for the French:

        • BigR

          Rogertc1
The rubber butt pads are because the French are so recoil sensitive!

    • BigR

If the French Police like it, I don’t want one!! When has the French ever won a war in recent history, without our help!! Their police suck and their military sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • iksnilol

Dude… you gotta have hentail, why bother surviving without hentai?

Also, regarding point 8. I think that breaking a part in a Mini-14 is a SHTF scenario in itself due to the hassle of repairing it.

EDIT: That feeling when I realistically am stuck with a Mini-14 or VEPR and not an AR-15 here in Norway due to not wanting to get a sports shooter license (hunting license is waay easier).

    • Twilight sparkle

At least y’all can still get VEPRs over there

      • iksnilol

Oh right, forgot about that… HAH, SUCKS TO BE YOU.

but seriously, I need that quick change VEPR in my life… in 6.5×55

        • int19h

A Russian gun chambered in a Swedish cartridge? If anyone’s going to make it, it’ll be the Finns. ~

          • iksnilol

Well, they made one in 30-06. Just change the barrel and bolt and you’re set.

      • tiger

They do not like to use hunting ammo however.

    • Gjert Klakeg Mulen
  • gunsandrockets

I remember an era when the Mini-14 was the lower cost option to the AR-15, and the Mini-14 was only slightly more expensive than a Universal M1 carbine.

    Funny how times change…

    • BeGe1

Remember when a Russian SKS was a saturday night special instead of a collector showpiece?

      • gunsandrockets

Hah! Back around 1999 when I saw retail dealers at the Great Western gun-show blowing out unused Chinese SKS rifles for $99 each, my circle of friends shared the humor that the SKS was the “Volksgun” rifle.

But even back then an honest to god Russian SKS had some collector value.

  • gunsandrockets

    Okay, AR covered, Mini-14 covered.

Now do 8 reasons why the AK is the best!

  • Gary Howell

Gun goes boom boom. Who knew?

  • Gun Fu Guru

If you keep the rifle parallel to the ground when you drop the magazine, it will drop free and you don’t have to shake it like an idiot.

  • Ebby123

Dear god James… the first 90 seconds of this video is the best thing TFB has ever published. Thank you, thank you sir.

    #notallheroswearcapes

  • Robert Kruckman

JAMES!!! I love U. Iknow U are probably married, cause U are so good looking, But if not we have a spare bedroom (Ihave a wife also) Just kidding, I REALLY LOVE UR STUFF, FU– the rest of them!!!!

  • Robert Kruckman

JAMES!!!!! LOVE UR STUFF. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

  • bobby_b

James, I watch most of your vids and some of the things you say just P me O.

But, at the same time, I enjoy them. The vids, I mean.

I cannot hardly believe the number of guys that come on here solely for the purpose of ripping you up, video after video.

I also cannot believe that you can continue on in the face of these guys with a smile.

Kudos to you. Keep it up. Offer those a-h’s a refund if they don’t like it.

  • tiger

Because the A-Team never hit a damn guy with a Ruger even once…….

  • Rogertc1

    Good review.

  • survivor50

The “Barbie Doll” of guns…Hell I’m sold right there !!! Sign me up !!!
    Don’t tell my Mini 14’s …

  • dltaylor51

I have both guns and like them about the same, they both have specific jobs to do and they both are very good at doing their jobs but if I had to run out the door and never come back again I’d grab the mini 14 and my Colt 1911 45 ACP and never look back.

  • Roger Smith

Well you can add that the AR-15 has an injection port on the left hand side for lefties. Left-handed people are odd to begin with. I am former USMC and I definitely would take the M4 over a Mini-14 to defend myself in my country every time. Where I say that AR is better I grew up hunting my first rifle was Remington 30-06. When I join the Marine Corps and was introduced to the M16 platform I never look back. Now my 12 gauge is on a AR-15 platform. My 308 is on the AR-15 platform. And of course the 5.56 ar15 platform. And you did a video you’re wearing Daisy Dukes and you have an AR-15 and it looks like it’s knocking you back. Can a Mini-14 do that ???
