Heckler & Koch SP5K: The Civilian MP5K

The Heckler & Koch SP5K is the closest thing to a real MP5K that an everyday citizen like us is able to get. This episode of TFB TV Patrick takes the iconic pistol out to the range and has way too much fun. The SP5K is almost identical to the MP5K that we all know and love with a few exceptions. Gone is the much-loved roller paddle mag release as well as the iconic forward grip handguard that we all associate with the MP5K. No matter, the SP5K still puts a huge grin on Patrick’s face and will be remaining in his collection.

  • TheNotoriousIUD

Definitely one of the coolest looking guns ever made.
If only it had dat third select position…..

  • Maxpwr

Too bulky. Too expensive. Wrong caliber. Range toy. Too much like a
    pistol
caliber carbine so it sucks. Not enough like a pistol caliber carbine
without a stock so it sucks. H&K: Because you suck and we hate
you. No need for it since it’s not an AR in 223 and you only need an AR
in 223 since everything else is a range toy. There, I covered every
standard TFB argument people make on a gun review. Those
    arguments aren’t for me me,
however. I like it. Should have saved up for an SP5K instead of the
Zenith Z-5K I got before H&K started importing these just to have an
    original H&K.

    • Big Burd

cant install the 3lug suppressor adapter because HK neutered the barrel, it ends at the front sight post and gas block. Doesn’t come factory installed with the paddle release.
Costs somewhere around 2399.95-2699.99 depending on the store for the Base model HK SP5k

      while the
MKE Z-5K ~721.95 less than for the HK markings and one less feature
MKE z-5P ~675.95 less than for the HK markings and two less features
MKE Z-5RS ~675.95 less than for the HK markings and two less features and a HK style endcap instead of the flat plate
MKE Z-5RS ~555.95 less than for the HK markings and three less features

essentially you’re paying more for less unless you HAVE to HAVE the HK markings.

      • thedonn007

Thanks, I was going to asj aboit the price.

      • Patrick R. – Senior Writer

No three lug would be correct for the MP5K.

        • Big Burd

You’re correct the MP5K didn’t have a three lug adaptor.

Still though that doesn’t change the fact that you’re still paying 721.95 more for a official HK ATF compliant version of the MP5K that has one technically glaring missing/incorrect feature (factory installed paddle mag release) that could have been installed at HK facilities in the US thus getting around the German export regulations in which they could have used as an excuse to justify the huge price difference other than the stamp markings..

          • Patrick R. – Senior Writer

I think that the increase over the close has to do with the optic mount, case, sling, and the sight tool. If you add up what those sell for second hand it puts it a bit cheaper than a clone.

          • Big Burd

I know you’re trying to justify the cost but seriously you don’t even rule out whats offered by zenith in your calculation?

MKZ Z-5 direct from Zenith @ 1794.00 includes
+A rugged plastic carry case +2 extra takedown pins
+picatinny style optic mount (399.95 for one officially stamped by HK from HKparts website) +3x 30 round magazines +factory sling
            +factory cleaning kit

            – 44.95 sight tool
For a grand total of $1838.95

you could literally buy the same 399.95 optic mount featured on the HK SP5K (@ hkparts) and still be cheaper and have more features than what HK is offering (2238.90 total)

HK’s version to match Zenith’s more correct version
            – HK SP5k 2399.55 base cost (lowest I’ve found)
            +includes optic mount +case +sling +sight tool +2 x 30 round magazines
(assuming you posted everything included except the 2×30 mags)

-89.95 HK official SP5k drop in paddle mag (hkparts)
            -29.99 for 1x 30round magazine (hkparts)
-29.95 for MP5k correct length hand guard (hkparts)
-19.95 for a 9mm generic cleaning kit (49.99 hk official cleaning kit on ebay, 79.95 on HK parts)
-8.00 for 2 take down pins (no price available at the time estimating 4.00ea)

total price $2577.39 to match zenith which is $738.44 more and if you want the exact same 399.95 HK SP5k optic rail on the Zenith it’s still $338.49 cheaper and pays for half the cost of a decent red dot…

        • Anonymoose

It would be for the MP5K-N.

      • Tom Currie

        Three comments:

        1) The MKE Z-5’s seem to be a better MP5K clone than the HK SP5K.

        2) The MKE Z-5’s are way overpriced

        3) [Censored comment about HK pricing]

      • Giolli Joker

“cant install the 3lug suppressor adapter because HK neutered the barrel, it ends at the front sight post and gas block”

I doubt it has a gas block. 😉

  • Rusty S.

I’ll gladly take that optics rail off your hands if you don’t want it….

  • Fhggj

What!? No throwing it at the target when it is empty?

    • Badwolf

Yeah, I’m disappointed too. I thought throwing at target when empty was gona be a regular thing with all guns reviewed by Patrick.

    • Y-man

He threw it off-camera. Video of that will be available very soon. [Just wait!]

  • Audie Bakerson

Dear Kennedy, Breyer Kagan, Sotomayor,, and Ginsburg: Please retire so we can overturn Miller.

  • Uncle Webkins

I was all set to put the cash up for one, until I saw the BS barrel situation that won’t let me run a can on it. Would’ve been an awesome Form 1.

    • uisconfruzed

That was the question I had, it’d be more tempting if I could hang my SilencerCo Hybrid on it.

  • GordonTrenchard

Well I think people are thinking about SBRing this guy. What about the folding stock ? Available? Possible?

    • Anonymoose

It should work with the standard MP5K stocks you get on HKParts.

      • Bland Samurai

You need an adapter. The MP5 uses one pin for the stock whereas the MP5K/SP89/SP5K use two.

        • Anonymoose

Looks to me like a completely different stock setup from the usual G3-style stocks (1- or 2- pin, and the 1-pin trigger groups still work okay on 2-pin guns).

    • Rusty S.

Available and as easy as removing the two rear takedown pins and the old endcap. As always, be sure to have your papers in order first.

  • Rnasser Rnasser

Too big, heavy, complicated and pricy for any practical use…

    • The Deplorable Boogur T. Wang

      yeah, I want one also.

      • Rnasser Rnasser

This is like half a step above an airsoft gun…

  • Raginzerker

I’m gonna get one of these for ccw #operator

    • Anonymoose

You can buy an MP5K shoulder holster from HKParts.

  • aweds1

I’d prefer a clone with an installed paddle mag release and integrated top rail in the receiver instead of a clamp. I know it’s an ‘original’ HK, but it’s also 2017.

  • valorius

Just imagine if Frodo and Samwise had a couple of these.

  • valorius

I’m guessing the HK fanboi tax on these is immense.

  • Pedenzo

    No last round bolt lock?

    • Grant

None of the 9mm MP-5s have a last round bolt lock. The 5.56 & .308 guns don’t have them either. It’s a feature not a bug, you get to do the HK slap every time you reload.

      • Pedenzo

Is the HK slap anything like the Wife slap? I get one from her every time I reload……

      • retfed

I was told about 30 years ago that when the FBI requested MP5s with last-round hold-open, H und K told them, “Zee Cherman solcher knows ven he has run out of ammunition.” So it’s not only you that sucks and that they hate, it’s the FBI.
To my mind, takedown and cleaning isn’t all that simple. But then I’m comparing it to an open-bolt Uzi, which is like taking down and cleaning a hammer.

  • Grant

I bought a Zenith Z-5P before HK brought these out. Even today I’d make the same choice. It has a threaded 3 lug barrel, a paddle mag release and a 2 pin lower. I also saved enough to pay for a stamp and the 922R parts I’ll need to SBR the gun.

The only reason to buy the HK is to hope you can sell it to someone for $5k 10 years from now. If you want to actually shoot the gun the Zenith/MKE or the POF is the way to go.

  • Verner

What? In the U.S. this comes with rail, sling and 2 30rd mags? In Europe they ship it with a 10 round mag and nothing else…

At least we can put a stock on it without any paperwork…
