Mystery SCAR 16 at the German Düsseldorf ax attack.

On 9:th of March 2017, a 36-year old suspect was detained after an axe attack that injured nine persons in the main train station in Düsseldorf, Germany.

One of the pictures that caught my attention was this FN SCAR-L Short with a 10″ barrel and an EOTech sight. Most likely carried by a member of the Spezialeinsatzkommando (SEK).

I was surprised to the the German Police use a SCAR, but after checking with some of my contacts I know better now. Actually the distance from Dusseldorf to Belgium (FN) is not far at all, which may be part of the explanation?

Below: The sign on the door says: “Herzlich willkommen“, in english i.e.  “a warm welcome”. Those in urgent need of help I’m sure concur as the SWAT Team are on their way.

The Police outside were equipped with HK MP5s.

Mobiles Einsatzkommando (MEK) special units of the criminal investigation units of the German state police

Spezialeinsatzkommando (SEK) special units of the German state police.

According to Wikipedia also the GSG use the SCAR, but I was told by a very reliable source they don’t, so who knows?

According to Wikipedia the German SEK are using the following firearms:

            Meh, nothing to see here.

        • QuadGMoto

Not always. There have been several attacks with blades lately.

        • TheNotoriousIUD

Nah. They decapitated a cop in London a while back I believe.

          • The Forty ‘Twa

Are you thinking of Lee Rigby? He was a soldier, not a cop.

          • TheNotoriousIUD

Well did they cut his head off?
            Then close enough.

Guy was a mentaly disturbed muslim from Kosovo

        • George Smythson

          redundant?

      • jay

Exactly! The bureaucrats who run Europe suppress this kind of news all the time. The scumbag is always a deranged guy, regardless how many time screams alah snakbar.
Someone up there at the top really wants a religious war.

        • joe tusgadaro

They suppress it, but it’s on the tv news, the newspapers etc etc…logical.

          • jay

Yes int’s on the news, but they show it as an act done by a nsingle crazy person, not a crazy indoctrinated salafi muslim.
They could simple deal with the problem now and avoid a war, but htey are actually fueling the hatred in order to get a bigger bang.

          • FarmerB

No, they definitely play down any mental health issues, because as we are constantly told, they are no danger to anybody except perhaps themselves.

          • joe tusgadaro

We must be reading/watching different news sources/official statements etc…

          • jay

If you rely on mainstream media you are misinformed.

          • joe tusgadaro

            Well, isn’t that convenient..

          • jay

There are five or six companies, owned mostly by two guys, that own most news channels, tv stations, news papers and so on.
Just look how this last election. You see how they all parrot the same lies, over and over? They all know most of the stuf they released is lie, yet they still do it.
It’s 2017. There are thousands of sourced of information out there, you have to double check everything that comes from mainstream media.

        • iksnilol

Uhm… if they wanted a religious war why would they suppress any religious motive?

          • jay

Think of a pressure vessel. The more pressure it collects, the bigger boom you get when it blows up.
There are 200 years old plans for a Muslims vs Christians total war. The idea is to get all Abrahamic religions to fight to extinction. Then blame it all on the fateful people and god, so they can bring an alternative- Lucifer.
Think about it. The same people who bomb muslim countries for the last 20 years, are supporting the Saudi based salafis , and are importing radicalized muslims in all Christian countries.
This people know what they are doing. By covering for the muslims, and treating them as privileged class, they get everyone to hate them. They are intentionally building hatred.
This scumbags would have been in their countries, had the psychopaths running this side of the world, would not have bombed their countries to ruins.
The whole thing is a scam. This psychopaths running the western world create chaos, so they can come up with a solution.

          • iksnilol

Don’t ya think that a plan like that could be safely completed in less than 200 years?

          • jay

They had to destroy few other countries and infiltrate most aspects of power.

This picture looks like its straight out of a 80s or 90s action movie. I wouldnt think twice if those guys appeared as Hans Gruber’s henchmen (of course without the Polizei patches).

    • Major Tom

Oh it is straight out of an 80s/90s action movie! Those are the red shirt cops the bad guys gun down en masse before the hero saves the day!

Ha, it’s got the primary 3 henchmen types all in one photo

      • Dr. Longfellow Buchenrad

        From left to right:

        1. No Nonsense Norm. Follows orders and doesnt ask questions; Doesnt really have lines, only grunts, but manages to live for most of the movie.
        2. Mr. Smooth. Most likely 2nd or 3rd in command; Likely to have an irrational grudge against the protagonist; has an uncanny ability to do anything for the first time unreasonably well; probably excellent with the ladies.
        3. The Engineer. Obsessed with perfecting his skills with any weapon or technology he may encounter; Knows how to immediately enter command prompt on any computerized device that has one (and magically creates one on devices that dont); Overanalyzes the situation and looks right past the hole in the plan that the protagonist uses to wreck the show; Miserably failing at inventing subtle ways to let the ladies know how much of a bad@&$ he is.

They heard their picture was going on the same website as James Reeves.

        • QuadGMoto

Poor James, well on his way to being transformed from a human being into an internet meme. How soon do think it will escape from TFB to the internet at large?

I lived in Düsseldorf for awhile and I tell ‘ya, the guys there take great pride in their looks- especially their hair. Über-Metrosexuals. A lot like Paris. That picture is classic D-dorf.

        • FarmerB

          Yep.

  • micmac80

SEK do have considerable leeway in terms of gear and buy what they want on terms of firearms.

  • Anonymoose

Unlike the G36 you can fire a SCAR with the stock folded and the BCG won’t blast out the back. :^)

    • Major Fret

Yes but with the SCAR the flimsy ugg boot stock will break off soon enough anyway.

      • Anonymoose

Only if you slam the stock open or buttstroke someone with it.

        • ostiariusalpha

          Or drop it.

          • Zachary marrs

Or use it for anything more intense than a few dozen rounds at a range and an hour long photo seesion just to look cool on Instagram

    • Preacher

And whom told you this roumer? G36 is perfectly able to shoot folded. I cannot tell of she does the whole service live, but she does enaugh for normal usage.
<- German Ex-Mil, shot it quite a few times, never own failed on me. Offical Bundeswehr Standards do not disagree with that too, and within the troop it is not known populary that she does – neither I ever heared this anywhere. Maybe we should consult HK – busting or proofing myths 😉 ?

  • A Fascist Corgi

Suggesting that they only adopted the SCAR because they’re geographically close to Belgium is ridiculous. It seems like none of the regular writers and commenters on this blog, besides me, is a fan of the SCAR. Go ask industry experts what they think about the SCAR. Most of them will tell you that it’s the finest assault rifle that’s ever been made, and that the only thing preventing more widespread adoption is the price. And according to the owner of Battlefield Vegas, it’s the best performing assault rifle on his range. And out of all of the military tests that I’ve seen, the SCAR almost always performs well.

    • Jason Culligan

Well, if a Mercedes was €30,000 as opposed to €70,000 then I’m sure everyone would buy one as well. The SCAR was built from the ground up as a special operations rifle, not a general issue firearm and that is reflected in the steep price tag.

The M4 is a better military rifle for general issue as it’s good enough to do the job and you can field far more rifles for the same price. Not everyone needs a Mercedes to do their regular day-to-day.

    • CommonSense23

So is that why the Rangers dumped the 16s and JSOC never adopted them.

      • anon

Instead they adopted the 17, and have 5.56 conversion kits.

        So, what was your point?

        • b0x3r0ck

I don’t get why more of these “modern” rifle don’t just come out using 308 and 5.56 from the start.

        • crackedlenses

Yup, and they’re still using their M4A1s and Mk18s, because the SCAR is clearly better.

          • anon

The MK16 wasn’t purchased largely due the cost of buying as many as they’d want. Buying a whole rifle is more expensive than purchasing small components or uppers. Due to USG holding the rights to M4 (now), and developing MK18. They can put manufacturing out to bid. The MK17, and MK20 are both fielded. FN was directed to make a 5.56 conversion kit for the MK17, which they did. None of this is terribly complicated. And for the “I have the recip charging handle” crowd. Its their because it was a requirement for submissions to the program.

          • crackedlenses

My point is that they are not busy trying to replace their 5.56 mm. weapons with the SCAR. Grabbing a 7.62×51 mm. SCAR does not equal the M4A1 as being outdated.

          • anon

ARs aren’t outdated, but there is inherent baggage that comes with any design. There are inherent advantages as well. When it comes to suppression, the operating mechanics and the design of the SCAR make for a cleaner, cooler operation. That isn’t a radical fanboi statement. It’s a result of increased dwell time due to the longer cam path, and the tappet piston system. It’s also easier to tune the gas system. Though that more a consideration for the commercial market since manufacturers like their guns to work even when their customers use crap under spec ammo.

          • crackedlenses

Sounds good. It would seem that so far the SF who switched back to the M4A1 do not desire the advantages that the SCAR would offer over the drawbacks compared to the M4A1. Perhaps that my change in the future.

      • A Fascist Corgi

Just because SOCOM mostly abandoned the 5.56 SCAR doesn’t mean that it was having performance problems. From what I read, they abandoned it because it supposedly wasn’t enough of an upgrade over the M4 to justify the additional cost. But that doesn’t make any sense since I just read a post on this blog saying that SOCOM is seeking an upgrade package for the M4 so that the M4 is more compatible with suppressors. Um, if SOCOM would have just stuck with the SCAR then they wouldn’t have had this problem…

Find me a single example of a police or military unit complaining about the performance of the 5.56 or .308 SCAR in the last few years. All I’ve seen is people complaining about the cost.

        • crackedlenses

The people for whom the SCAR was designed dropped it because it wasn’t better than what they already had, and you still insist that it’s better cuz….

    • Juggernaut

      SCARs are commanding $3600+ now.

    • Dr. Longfellow Buchenrad

As a die hard M14 fanboy I will without question say that the SCAR-H is the best battle rifle you can buy.

As for assault rifles, there are a lot more competitive options and while I cant think of one that is all around better than the SCAR-L, I would be more hesitant to say that it is the best. It seems to be more of a case by case basis type thing depending on what youre doing and where youre doing it.

    • Dotcoman

The only thing I do not like is the fact that mine is an L and not an H, and the reciprocating charging handle. And when running a EoTech tends to put scars on my knuckles if I am not paying and some times even when I am fully paying attention when charging the weapon.

It’s definitely a no shiiter when firing though, and it’s accuracy is better than I deserve.

  • LiberalFascist

Germany is still using Einsatzgruppen? Thought maybe that went out with Trablinka. Old dog- new tricks I guess

    • crackedlenses

  • GermamFirearmEnthusiast

The German SEK’s don’t have the freedom and the money to buy what they want. Also they field only one assault rifle model in every State. The Wikipedia article about the firearms in use with SEK’s is very unreliable. It’s not a serious source.
Yes, the SCAR is a very good rifle. In the French aussault rifle competition the SCAR L AIF performed all competitiors out. But FN lost because they break a competition rule. They tried to readjust they’re offer to be cheaper. So they were kicked out and HK winned the race, but not because they had the best rifle. @ Anonymoose the G36 can safely fired with the stock folded.

  • JumpIf NotZero

Drop leg holster, about 80lbs of gear for a hostage rescue, and an EOTech mounted that far forward.

Ooookkk. If it’s all stupid but works I guess…

    • DIR911911 .

could be planning for a 3x or 4x magnifier to go in front of that eotech

    • ostiariusalpha

EOTechs work just fine that far forward, it’s not like they require a specific eye-relief. The actual circle/dot is pretty small, and up close it doesn’t do anything particularly helpful besides constrain some of your peripheral vision with the frame.

  • int19h

The interesting thing about German SWAT teams is that they also love revolvers. You can see quite a few .357 in thigh holsters on various photos.

    • Preacher

Definitly SEK NRW, they are officaly issued with that weapon – also they look perfectly normal. Cannot tell the background, if they use civial dress on purpose in daily live (because its comfi + they are allowed), or if it is something related to a reason, like they get alert while beeing on off duty stand by.

We thank you for your groundbreaking reporting. I’m glad you have contacts, a reliable source, and wikipedia. Oh excuse me, a ” very reliable source”.
