HOPPE’S BLACK: Take your AR Cleaning to the Dark Side

Hoppe's Black

Hoppe’s #9 has been a benchmark gun cleaning formula for decades. Now they are attempting to garner attention from the exploding AR-15 market. Their new Hoppe’s Black is formulated to lubricate, protect, and clean your modern sporting rifles in the most extreme conditions imaginable.

There is probably no American firearm that is more abused than the AR-15. With that in mind, Hoppe’s Black was engineered to function and excel in temperatures from -65°F to 540°F. While Hoppe’s is directly marketing this new line of cleaning products to AR-15 owners it is suitable in any high-round count platform (AK-47, MP5, any other gun you pump tremendous amounts of ammo through, etc). The specific products that they are introducing are as follows:

  1. Gun Cleaner
  2. Copper Cleaner
  3. Precision Oil
  4. Gun Grease Syringe
  5. Micro Fiber Lubricating Cloth

Vista Outdoor had this to say about this new line and expansion in the Hoppe’s brand of cleaning products:

Hoppe’s, the best-known name in gun care products, releases a new high-performance line of cleaners and lubes designed specifically for the needs of modern shooters. The formulations in Hoppe’s Black line deliver maximum performance in high-round count, gas-operated firearms such as pistols and modern sporting rifles.

Most of these products should be hitting gun store shelves very soon if not already at your local gun shop. A complete specification sheet for Hoppe’s Black can be seen below.

The outdoors, fitness and anything related to firearms are my passions. I am a S&W Armorer, Glock Armorer, reloader and am coping with an addiction to classic S&W and Colt revolvers (by buying more revolvers). I’ve been a guest writer for Sierra Bullets and love long walks to the gun range.

Looks more like a personal hygiene kit than gun lube.

    • TheNotoriousIUD

      For ammosexuals?

      • One of these days I’m going to hear someone actually use the term “ammosexual” in a sincere attempt at being insulting– as opposed to gun owners hyperbolically mocking anti Bill Of Rights zealots– and on that day I shall perish of asphyxiation from laughin’ my fool head off.

    • Sunshine_Shooter

      Well, it is for cleaning.

  • TheNotoriousIUD

    Oh god, here we go…

    • @TheNotoriousIUD:disqus This confirms to me that the gun market is a bit dim.

      • TheNotoriousIUD

Yeah, im sure itll be a best seller.

      • iksnilol

Nah, this will dim the market. Market earlier was too bright.

  • Andrew

Remind me what was wrong with regular old Hoppe’s #9 for use in high round count platforms?

    • TheNotoriousIUD

      Wrong color label.

  • Edeco

Aged in charred oak for rich, bold flavor?

  • Black Dots

r/weekendgunnit is going to have a field day with this.

  • john huscio

    Marketing to one percenters?

    • Sunshine_Shooter

      To three percenters

  • Ratcraft

I’m in. I a full on Hoppe’s nerd. All I use. Don’t care. I’d wear it as cologne if I could. That and cosmoline…. Full disclosure. I still have a GLASS jar of it. When it runs out I refill from the new plastic. Yes, I know. Issues, we all have them tho.

    • Andrew Dubya

Are you kidding? I have a bunch of old cleaning supplies on display, my first Hoppes was a hand-me-down bottle from the 70s or so. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b7991a13d5978b37aa99012526ec3251e0f0c158c3d962e903efa742b2b7c6e3.jpg

      • Ratcraft

I LOVE IT!!!!! I have the same stuff.

    • You’re a lot less likely to end the day screaming on the floor– clutching your head and praying desperately to every god and God in the dictionary for the sweet, merciful release of Death– nowadays than if you had tried to wear #9 as cologne back in the ’80s or earlier.

Nitro headaches are worse than waterboarding or stun guns to the Fun Zone, is what I’m saying. I for one am supr glad that Hoppe’s altered their formula.

    • Phillip Cooper

I’ve never gotten the love affair with Hoppes.

      Stuff STINKS.

Froglube isn’t much better (I DEPLORE wintergreen).

I’ll stuck with Acqua di Gio for cologne, and froglube for weapons.

  • lol

You people are so high and mighty. Mere mortal gun owners look up to the infamous disqus posters as God’s!

Hoppes has practically no lubrication products, despite their name being synonymous with it. This is a common sense move for hoppes as most people think #9 is a lube. Clearly labeling everything and numbering the order is more common sense needed amongst the intense names like FIRECLEAN WEAPONSHIELD FROGLUBE etc.. not really clear what any of those products do. Is fire clean a lubricant or a cleaner? Who knows.

Good on hoppes. Bad on you commenters for jumping on the train.

    • Ratcraft

I have both Gun Grease and Lubrication oil made by Hoppe’s. Maybe they quit selling it but I’ve had a tube of both for years. Fireclean is Crisco.

      • Saint Stephen the Obvious

        “Fireclean is Crisco”

Be careful, you could go to hell for saying that.

        😉

        • int19h

And they roast sinners on pans filled with FireClean there for that.

        • Phillip Cooper

Who cares what it is. Does it work?

      • Dougscamo

        +1…me too….

  • PersonCommenting

Glad to see they have different nozzles and dispensers on these cleaning products. I havent bought hoppies in a while because their solvent comes in a jar and you cant dip a rod or dry patch twice without contaminating it.

    • I get 12 patches for 12/20ga, 16 for .45, or 24 for .22 out of one blue shop towel and a pair of scissors, and thus could not care less how many patches I burn through.

      • PersonCommenting

I do, I dont want to rethread them if I get a mostly clean patch through a bore but know I have to. Plus it is just a waste of solvent too. The patch shouldnt be soaking wet.

  • PersonCommenting

Yall should do a review on pro shot cleaning products. They have a nice usable case. Usually a needle head on solvents and lubes which is convenient and come at an affordable price. Also their cleaning rods are coated so their is no chance of barrel marring.

  • Bill Jordan

I always use this with my fire clean.

  • Saint Stephen the Obvious

“… engineered to function and excel in temperatures from -65°F to 540°F…”

    Never been done before.

    😉

    • Dougscamo

Hope they aren’t talking about air temperature….

      • Gary Kirk

The world is sorta going to Hell.. They’re just trying to stay ahead of the game..

        • Dougscamo

Wonder if they plan on a line of sunscreen?…

    • If any part of my AR is 540° it’s because I went out fighting and I’m being sent off on a flaming boat with it clutched to what’s left of my chest.

“is is unknown if the gun oil known has Hoppes, contributed to the downfall of the American Empire, as unknown to all, it was a potent neurosexual stimulant, possibly wearing out the nations warrior class who quickly succumbed to the repeated waves of barbarian invasions from the south” Suppakillamomo IV 2181

    Sounds racist…

    • Phillip Cooper

Nevermind your comment…. who’s the hottie in your avatar? 😉

  • Stephen Paraski

A little late for the hype. #9 is great for scrubbing, but Mobil 1 is a better lube.

OK, we get it.. Hoppe’s paid a nice sum to have this ad placed… is it really necessary for it to be on the first page THREE TIMES?!
