New Reflex Sights from NcStar

FlipDot

NcStar announced several new reflex sights prior to the SHOT Show next month. One is a solar powered rifle sight while the other is a pistol sight designed for the Glock MOS pistols.

SPD Solar Reflex Sight

SPD

The SPD Solar Reflex Sight is a red dot kind of sight that primarily operates on a single AA battery. However, the unit has a small solar cell on top that serves as a secondary power source. It is not immediately clear is the SPD has a built in rechargeable battery that is charged by the solar panel, or if the solar panel is intended as the direct source of backup power.

The unit has a built in quick attach mount for Picatinny rails.

FlipDot

The FlipDot is a reflex type sight that is designed to mount to the top of the slide of a Glock MOS pistol. These sights directly fit the slides that have been cut for the Trijicon RMR sight.

Similar to some of the backup sights used on rifles, the FlipDot folds down and deploys instantly when the button is pushed. The rear of the sight has a notch style sight for use with the front sight regardless of the FlipDot being deployed.

This unit is made of anodized aluminum and runs on a single CR2032 battery.

    Ha ha NcStar!

    Oh. You’re serious.

  • Drew Coleman

The Flipdot sight is actually a neat concept. I wonder how well it would actually hold up, given NCStar’s reputation.

    • Twilight sparkle

Seems like it would help for making it work with a holster

    • Audie Bakerson

      I hope it isn’t patented.

      • Phillip Isherwood

You nailed exactly what I was thinking, would love a vortex version. Every ncstar electronic sight I have owned from lit recticle scope to red dot to holo sight, every single one has broken after very moderate range time, I’ve never had a vortex break on me.

Hopefully someone pulls a Keltec/Ruger move

    • William Elliott

depending on the cost, I would love to test one…need to get a slide milled for an RMR anyway.

  • Leonardo Padrino

Ncstar couldn’t even hold up to the crazy recoil from my PTSD causing SCAR Airsoft gun. The slab of glass just fell out of the reflex sight. So…no. Nice try though.

    • DanGoodShot

I had a similar experience with one of their 4x scopes mounted on my kids 10/22.

      • Joe

I had a NC Star red dot sight I gave away when I noticed one of the lenses was canted. That was a decade ago, can’t comment on current quality.

        • DanGoodShot

My experience was 2 years ago. My grandfather picked up a ncstar reddot last year. It died last year. So if anything, ncstar is consistent when it comes to sucking.

Did you know NC STAR is an acronym?

I have one mounted on my Mosin (before you haul out the pitchforks, it’s not a permanent bubba mod). The combo actually got me my first few seasons’ worth of deer. And back when I was poor enough that all I could afford was a $120 rifle, some $5 rings and a $15 scope, as well as a $15 box of soft points for ethical hunting…. I was super grateful for the venison it put on my table.
It is not my preferred deer gun, but it still sits there in the back of the safe for sentimental reasons. I have no beef against NCStar, as long as you go into it knowing full well you’re getting what you pay for.

Say what you want about NcStar but at least this manufacturer gets it. Use a standard footprint (RMR in this case) instead of coming up with yet another. It helps everybody out if MRD can standardize their mounting dimensions like what the industry did with the Aimpoint Micro footprint.

  • MrBrassporkchop

Bet you anything people are going to complain about the flipdot holding zero.

On the other hand, using a really large dot size and using it for close range it won’t matter and still be a super fast sight.

    I really like the idea.

  • DanGoodShot

I really like that flipdot. What a great concept. Too bad it’s implementation wasn’t done by a reputable company with a focus on quality. Years ago I bought 2 products from ncstar. 556 stripper clips= junk. Half the tabs broke off 1st use. A 4x scope I mounted on a 10/22. Recoil knocked out the glass. Lol.

    • mig1nc

I was thinking the same thing. Great concept. But God, NC Star? Yikes.

Would be cool if it would flip up automatically when you draw it from the holster.

  • TCBA_Joe

The pistol mounted MRDS is still in it’s early phases. They’re harder than they were a couple years ago, but there are still reports of Trijicons and Leupolds still having issues. While I’d trust one with some vetting I wouldn’t put a penny into an NCstar sight.

  • Cal S.

NC Star makes a wicked AR foregrip. If that solar optic is cheap enough, I’ll give it a shot.

  • jerry young

Given the size of the solar panel it must be to charge a battery one so small couldn’t have enough output to run much let alone the fact it would have to be inline with sunlight to work, you would have to make sure you were out in direct sunlight to get optimum output and always in sunlight while just carrying to keep it charging, this would have to be to charge the battery only it is a neat concept but I didn’t know you can recharge a standard cr2023 battery

    • AMX

You can’t – the solar sight uses a AA battery.

      • jerry young

Unless there’s more to the post the last line says it uses a cr2023

        • AMX

There *is* more to the post – they announced *two* new sights, the SPD Solar (solar cell, AA battery) and the FlipDot (folding lens, CR2023 battery).

  • Edeco

Wouldn’t touch it, dealt with their customer service once, the blithe attitude toward low quality is hilarious. Used to dealing with 12 year old airsofters maybe.

  • Gary Kirk

    NC Star…

Now you can put a POS on your MOS

  • El Duderino

So what is the MRBF (mean rounds before failure) of the flip sight on a G40? Over/under of 1…discuss.

  • SLi-Fox

I like the idea of having solar power plus a standard AA. If the AA recharged from the solar cell, then what a great idea. l’ve had my NC Star experiences and wouldn’t touch these optics with the exception of maybe a round or two if someone let me.
