Savage Launches New A-Series Rimfire Rifle – The A22

Rimfire ammunition is finally(!) starting to reach what most would consider easy availability, with units actually staying in stock on retail shelves. For the last three years, the spaces have typically been barren and those wanting ammo in bulk had to seek it online at higher prices. Recognizing this, various manufacturers are working hard to get new rimfire products to the market.

The latest is Savage, which has announced the launch of their latest A-series rimfire rifle the A22. The A22 is similar to many of Savages other offerings, incorporating some potential accuracy improvements over its competitors, especially using Savage’s thread-in headspace system. The trigger is likely quite good from the factory, from Savage’s AccuTrigger line.

The weapon is a 22LR straight blowback using a 10 round rotary magazine. The barrel is button rifled where many “cheap” 22’s use an extruded rifle barrel and mated to a billet aluminum receiver set. The receiver is drilled and tapped from the factory for rails and accessories and comes equipped with adjustable iron sights. The rifle is rounded out by a composite stock.

Perhaps most interesting on the new offering is the price. Considering the offerings from the factory which other platforms have as aftermarket upgrades, the $281 MSRP is a steal. Street prices likely won’t be too much less (as MSRP is so low), but I can see a $250 hunting-ready rimfire being a real possibility.
