Inside the MKE Factory

These photos were shared in a MP5 enthusiasts group. No description of what they were pictures of but you can get the general idea that they are making MP5s. MKE is the Turkish firearms manufacturer. Zenith is the ones importing these Turkish made MP5s. The word is that MKE purchased the tooling from H&K so their MP5s are the real deal, just not made in Germany. Here are some photos of the MKE MP5s being made and tested.

I have a Z5RS (the vanilla clone) that I really like and that I’ve SBR’d. The only annoyance is the knurled thread protector (1/2 x 28 L0.5″) that DOES come loose after firing a mag or two.

I planned from the outset to suppress this weapon, and it made sense to go with the Tri-lug mount, and that’s what my Gemtech MK9K is setup for (the mount is permanently installed). Obviously, a thread protector coming loose while a can is mounted would be disastrous.

I’m having a Hell of a time finding a smooth thread protector, too. Apparently smooth TPs are recommended to mitigate the TP from coming loose. Gemtech’s manual says that a TP MUST be mounted, and to only use smooth thread protectors. They “sell” them on their website, but have been out of stock forever, and TROS USA is their supplier, and last April I paid them $30 to make me one which they said would happen in the spring, but so far nothing and they won’t respond to my emails.

I’m thinking of just rocksetting the TP on there.

    • Sunshine_Shooter

I’m thinking either lock-tite (or rockset) or tack weld that sucker on there.

    • John

I would just put a drop of locktite on it.

That way if you ever want to remove it, you can.

A drop or two should keep it firmly in place. I wouldn’t just gob it on….

Red Loctite (the very strong one) loosens up with heat. Put some on the muzzle end of a firearm with a can mounted and what do you get…? Now imagine the lower-strength blue Loctite. There’s a reason why literally nobody ever puts Loctite anywhere near muzzles. I think Rocksett or something similar is a must in these cases. Loctite is good for screws and bolts, not muzzle devices that heat up.

        • John

True enough. Rocksett is very good and I’ve used it on my 5.56 mm muzzle devices.

On a 9mm however, there’s not near that amount of heat.

I think either will work fine.

          • HSR47

No, red loctite is NOT fine for that application. It doesn’t take much to get a muzzle device on a 9mm firearm hot enough to defeat red loctite without even having a can installed. With a can installed, the area directly over/around the thread protector in question is in the hottest portion of the muffler.

            Rocksett or nothing.

I have a Z5RS SBR that I used loctite 222 on the muzzle thread protector. Have had no problems when using my trilug tirant 9 or bare muzzle in about 2000 rounds.

      • KestrelBike

Fantastic, thank you very much for this info.

    • Edeco

Hmmm, yeah, I have threads/caps on a couple things. I regret nothing. Heck, I consider it my duty as an American, but there is extra hassle, esp on the MP22c where it’s a two-part assembly.

    • HSR47

And here I was thinking that I had it bad with the 9mm barrel that took about 3-4 times his “estimate” of 6-8 weeks.

TROS appears to do a few things relatively well, but providing accurate ETAs and communicating with customers do not appear to be on that list.

      • KestrelBike

He was pretty communicative about ETAs before he got my check, then after that, not a word. I searched for complaints about him, and there are tons on various boards… where basically he replies to no one, and the only way they get their refund back is to threaten a bad review to the BBB, then he finally coughs up a check.

It’s only $30 and I’ve wasted much, MUCH more on dates that went nowhere, but damn, his kind of “customer service” pisses me off.

  • Has anyone heard anything more about the espionage charges filed against MKE’s Mustafa Tanrıverdi back in April? If you read between the lines in the press coverage at the time, Tanrıverdi was trying to sell MP5 and MPT76 design plans to Zenith, and the informant “KK” was likely Zenith CEO Kutlay Kaya.

    • It looks like a formal indictment was issued in June, and Turkish news sources have confirmed that Zenith CEO Kutlay Kaya was the informant.

      • There was another flurry of news coverage of Tanrıverdi’s trial in September. It seems that the defense has spun a number of conspiracy theories, including that a rival was trying to eliminate Tanrıverdi from contention for the General Director position at MKE and that the Fethullah Gülen Terrorist Organization (FETO) was involved. The FETO was publicly blamed for the Turkish coup attempt a couple of months earlier.

That foundry is a dump. I like pits for casting, in case the mold leaks or explodes. Will be digging a hole in my sibling/sibling-in-law’s yard to cast some stuff in the spring. Haven’t told them the good news yet.

  • Omerli

    Nicely done. Thank you

  • John

Mmm. It appears that Heckler and Koch’s refusal to sell to non-NATO countries will have precisely zero effect. C’est la vie.

    • Badwolf

      Only mp5?

    • USMC03Vet

Turkey although a NATO country was specifically banned too.

  • Sasquatch

No way will I buy one! Not till prices get around 300 to 500 range.
