Newly founded Russian company Dozor produces a drop-in Makarov pistol grip called “PM Grip Kit”. The new grip is more ergonomic and adds a thumb actuated magazine release lever.
Although Dozor grip adds a thumb mag release, it still retains the original heel release. So you can use both ways should you need to. It requires no special skills or gunsmithing to install this new grip on Makarov pistols.
Dozor grip has a “pebble” texture on sides and horizontal serrations on back strap. The mag release lever is available only on left side of the gun. The grip also features thumb rests on both sides.
The grip is compatible with Makarov pistol and its derivatives: 6P42, IZh-79, IZh-71, MP-371, MP-471, PM-T. It is available in Russia at price of 2200 rubles, which is roughly equal to $34. I think it should not be a problem for the manufacturer to ship the grip worldwide, however make sure to check your local laws before ordering.

They also make such upgrade grip for Stechkin automatic pistol (APS). The APS grip has a different texture and adds an ambidextrous thumb release lever. It also has a separate cover plate for the stock attachment rail.
Earlier FAB Defense released a similar upgrade for Makarov pistol, which you can read about here.
