FN Goes FDE with FNS-9 Compact

FN FNS 9 Compact FDE

FN America announced the addition of a new color to the FNS-9 Compact line. The new guns have a FDE frame with a color matched slide. The company uses a PVD process to apply the color. The new guns will carry a suggested retail price of $599.

The FNS-9 Compact is a striker-fired pistol chambered in 9mm. New FDE guns will match the old ones in terms of capacity and size. So, if the plain black gun fits your hand and holster, the new FDE one will as well. The guns use a 12 round magazine as standard, though they can also run the full size FNS-9 17 round magazines. Ten round magazines are also available for those in states that require more frequent reloads.

My only question is will the popularity of the FDE color wane at some point? We’ve always had black and blued guns. Stainless finishes have also been around for a long time. However, new colors like FDE and OD green are relative new comers.

Personally, I like having a larger color palate from which to choose. However, it kind of feels like FDE may be a bit overplayed. FDE should just be a normal option rather than a new model, if that makes any sense.  I look forward to a time where custom ordering of pistols will be a standard thing. For example, you could go online to FN America’s website (or whoever), plug in your preferred Pantone color and it arrives a few days later.

Never liked the FDE colors. Like the new grey trend thats slowly creeping in.

Hey FN, How about a FNX Compact?

    • JustAHologram

And “tactical”versions of the other calibers

    • Bullphrog855

I would pick this up instantly.

    • BearSlayer338

The problem is Da/Sa guns are not trendy right now like all the overrated striker fired guns. I’ve tried to like the striker fired guns but on all of them(at least the ones I’ve owned) the trigger pull feels like garbage Imo. That and they really aren’t more reliable than other options on the market.

      Striker Fire pistols I’ve owned:
      Glock 19,Glock19C,Glock 26(2),Glock 42, Springfield Xd 45 compact,Springfield XDM 4.5 9mm,Ruger SR9c,M&P 45,M&P Sheild 9mm(2),Kahr TP45,Kahr CW9(3), Sig P320,S&W 40VE(4), and Walther P99 QA(2).

      How about an FNS-45?

      • ProLiberty82

Yes, and make one with a “5 inch barel that takes FNX Tactical 15 rnd mags.

    • nova3930

      that and an FNX-9T

  • Gary Kirk

For all the urbanites that need to carry concealed during desert warfare in their khakis..

    • Joe

I was going to say, paired with khakis FDE should reduce the contrast.
I don’t wear Dockers, I wear khaki Dickies.

  • John L.

    That’s color matched?

    • JustAHologram

FN uses what I call the 50 Shades of FDE approach

I have a FDE GLOCK 19. No one wanted it at my local shop. I got it for $75 below the cost of a regular gen 4.

The coating on the frame and slide are wearing off at the contact points from the Kydex holster. It looks horrendous after 5 months, but it’s a tool to me.If I bought it at retail ($600), I’d be pissed about the wear.

It’s ugly and I don’t live in the desert, but a bargain is a bargain.

    • Rob

Your gun gun did not leave glock that color. The factory FDE frames are molded in FDE. Some distributors cerakote black guns, which is always a poor choice.

      • Tim

Yeah, I know. Mine is from Academy. The Ceracote (sp?) is awful.

        I couldn’t refuse for a gen 4 for $475.

  • CoastieGM

Does anyone know if the mags are drop free? I thought I read somewhere that they weren’t.

  • JustAHologram

    And still no FNS 45

  • Dracon1201

…Wonder if it still has the horrendous trigger…

  • tiger

I want a longslide with a color option. Black & gun metal blue are boring. Fde is not bad, but it is a start. Maybe Santa will drop one on me?

    • JustAHologram

Maybe more companies will take note of SCCY’s color selection

  • David Harmon

Their FDE looks more like Tan……

    • Rick Kirkpatrick

Yes, they probably should have called it “sand”.

  • Harry’s Holsters

A a LAV Live Larry said FN was redoing the FNS and it was coming 2017. I wonder how drastic of a change it’ll be.

FDE actually makes more sense then black. It you accidentally flash your gun or wear a shirt that is woven looser it won’t show as much.

The 4 inch model with factory Night Sights and no safety is currently $399 at Palmetto State Armory. I got the FNS-40 with Night Sights for $369 at Palmetto this spring.

  • Treyh007

FDE is here to stay…… if your not into that sort of thing, buy the Black or Stainless models!
