Steyr “Scout RFR” Rimfire Rifle

Steyr-Mannlicher has announced on their website about the release of a new rimfire rifle called Scout RFR. It was initially introduced in IWA 2016 fair.

The rifle has a straight pull toggle-lock action, which is a bit uncommon one. This type of locking mechanism is rather frequently seen in biathlon rifles. Coupled with short rimfire cartridges it makes an extremely fast manual action. Another advantage of such action is that the bolt does not protrude back of the receiver during cycling the action.

The rifle has a polymer stock and a long Picatinny rail section above the barrel.  It is fed from a ten round detachable box magazines and it’s chambered in one of the following calibers: .22LR, .17HMR or .22 WMR.

Steyr will sell this gun with a knife, sheath and mounting bracket. Reportedly, it will be possible to store the knife inside the stock. I think the idea behind selling a rifle/knife combo is to make it attractive for the survival market.

The gun has an overall length of 35.6″ (980mm) with 20.1″ (500mm) barrel length and weighing 7.3 lbs (3.14 kg).

Here is a video demonstrating how the action of Steyr Scout RFR works:

Interestingly, the action and rifle itself are very reminiscent of ISSC SPA rifle, which is also an Austrian one.

There is no information available yet concerning the final price. Earlier prices of €480 and €576 appeared in various sources. It is also not clear if Steyr will sell the gun in the US market, but I think it would be wise to at least show the gun in SHOT Show 2017.
