T/C Encore Upgrades Part 1: Bullberry Barrel Works

IMG_4278

A custom Thompson Center Encore break action pistol is on my short list of must-have unique guns. The one thing that has kept the Encore on my wish list and not a reality (besides the cash reserves) is caliber choice. For a pistol this special, it needs the right round to make it all worthwhile. If I had to pick right now, I’d go with a match chamber .22 long rifle. One option for a fully custom Encore is Bullberry Barrel Works.

What is it about a single shot pistol that has so much allure? For me, it’s the blend of steel and wood alongside match-grade accuracy. On top of that, a break action gun is about the biggest departure from tactical, polymer, billet and nylon you can get without going full muzzleloader (which Bullberry can also provide).

Anyway, here’s a quick look at the options available for a custom Encore build. Keep in mind that barrels will run $300 and up, wood stock sets $400 and up and complete builds will start at around $1K. Lead times range from 3-6 months depending on options and wood grades. But the end result is a beautiful performer.

  • thedonn007

.460 Smith and Wesson. I am assuming that I could also use .45 lc and .454 Casull in it as well.

    • Sunshine_Shooter

That would be correct, it is compatible with .45Colt and .454.

      • thedonn007

Yea, sometimes I regret buying a 9 mm suppressor instead of a .45 caliber suppressor.

        • uisconfruzed

THAT’s why I bought SilencerCo’s Hybrid rated for the 45-70 Govt.

  • Anonymoose

.50-110. Go big or go home.

    • Giolli Joker

Some rimmed version of .50 Whisper and a suppressed barrel.

      • Anonymoose

Don’t need a rim with an Encore. You could go for JDJ’s original .510 Whisper or any of those newer thumper cartridges like the .510 Beck.

        • Giolli Joker

Well, an 800+ grains match solid sticking out of a .50 Alaskan case would be cool. 🙂

      • Adam

        I have a Ruger Number 3 in 50 Alaskan throated for CBE’s 910 grain BMG projectile…

        • Giolli Joker

          Very interesting! Suppressed?

          • Adam

            Gd no. not in Australia….

  • William Nelson

Always wondered just how popular T/C break-top firearms are: always seemed to me to be the best compromise between having the same platform but a multitude of calibers to go with. These Bullberry modified models are simply beautiful.

  • gusto

    30-06, 223 and 20 gauge

a 6 or 8×50 scope on the 30-06 + suppresed not so much for the sound but for the flash
    a 2-7×33 on the 223
and a reddot on the 20gauge

will round out my hunting rifles/calibres

  • Roy G Bunting

If I could have 1 short barreled rifle, it’d be a Contender or Encore (Not sure which has the better caliber options). Then I’d spend the next several years collecting barrels and optics. 🙂

12″ 300 BLK barrel threaded for a suppressor would probably be my first though.

    • Amanofdragons

Encore. It’s a much beefier frame. Just about any caliber can be used. They’ve chambered one in 600 ne, but it was uncontrollable with the recoil.

  • Swarf

    Almost a Decker pistol.

  • Xtorin O’hern

i choose .460 S&W out of an 8 inch barrel
