Magpul D60 Sixty Round .223 Drum Overview and Mag Dump

In this episode of TFBTV, James tests out Magpul’s new D60 drum on the FN M4 rifle.  Magpul launched this drum after much fanfare and promises utter reliability and great usability. James puts these claims to the test as he runs through the function of the D60, along with a 60rd drum dump to make sure everything works as advertised. Also, James answers the question: “Is this drum worth $125?”

  • Black Dots

I have a feeling Magpul introduced these to allow the public to essentially Beta test a product they want the USMC to adopt for the M27 IAR.

    • TechnoTriticale

USMC will want to know reliability over range of cyclic rates. I would also guess that 2x STANAG capacity is not terribly interesting to them, given the bulk.

The video here was disappointing in regards to cyclic:
      because not “real” M4
(and public is apt to be testing almost entirely on semi).

And, I seriously wonder how easily it loads with a stripper clip.

    • From Soldier Systems analysis of the D60:

      D60 – 20 oz empty; 44 oz loaded

      Pmag 40rd- 6.3 oz empty, 22.6 loaded

So essentially an empty D60 weighs nearly as much as a loaded 40rd mag, and a loaded D60 weighs as much as 2 40rd mags.

I think Jame’s comparison of the two coupled mags vs drum is apt; for the weight/bulk two coupled 40rd mags (80rds) would be more efficient than the 60rd drum.

And also a nice magazine, I guess. I more watch for James’ sake.

Some jackets have straps on the back to make them even tighter.

        • iksnilol

Those jackets are good. Like git gud. Very nice to use.

The “straps” aren’t on the back, it is the sling being hooked onto a hook that’s on the jacket itself. If you’ve seen hunting jackets with rubber pads on the shoulders (to hold the sling), it’s the same concept taken to its extreme.

          • M-dasher

actually youre wrong…..the straps on the back (as show in the pic) are there to tighten the fit of the jacket over your shoulders

          • iksnilol

First time I’ve heard of something like that.

Did your heart start racing a bit while watching James’ exquisite coiffure bounce in slow motion?

        • Tassiebush

          That’s a curious predicament you’ve got there!

        • Edeco

Not necessarily. People like to touch animals, not all zoophiles.

        • Tassiebush

Life can be confusing. Especially when you are young. I had my moment of clarity when I got out of the shower and saw my back in the mirror and realized I’m just not able to appreciate a sight like that.

          • iksnilol

See, that’s where I had my moment of confusion. I mean, I get out of the shower, glistening with water and whatnot and I see this… this divine-like creature. And I stand there simply in awe, like we usually do when presented with otherwordly beauty. So I reach out with my hand to touch it only for my hand to be greeted by the cold touch of a mirror.

So in short, I can definitely understand women better now… also gay guys.

          • Tassiebush

…and Onan and Narcissus… Lol damn that cracked me up. For a dude writing in at least your third language you really have a way with words!

          • iksnilol

            Thanks 😀

To be honest, I learnt English and Norwegian at about the same time. So whenever I mess up in one language I’ll call that language my third one, y’know, it’s a decent excuse.

            This comment is majestic.

          • iksnilol

            Thanks.

Would you believe that I had the equivalent of somewhere between a D and a C (3 out of 6 in Norwegian grading system) in writing? I mean, straight As in English but that’s another matter entirely 😛

That’s cool, I bet the average American gets between a D and C in writing, from what I’ve read. We can’t even speak English very well. Except the guy who knows all the good words.

          • iksnilol

[Scary Russian accent, think Boris the Blade]

So… who is this… guy with all the good words?

      • Klaus Von Schmitto

If James were a dancer, maybe. A lawyer, never.

    • Wolfgar

      What ever turns your crank.

      • iksnilol

Well, James is married and I can’t clone myself yet. So I’ll have to stick to women, sorry, I guess.

        • Wolfgar

And back to the discussion of the Magpul D60

          • iksnilol

It’s round, holds 60 rounds and seemingly works.

            Not really that interesting.

          • Wolfgar

Maybe, but it is more interesting than what or who you desire in the bedroom.

          • iksnilol

            Oh, the bedroom?

James could have me anywhere, not only the bedroom 😉 Mull over that a bit ; )

          • Wolfgar

Have you ever heard the comment get a room? Look it up and exercise it,

          • iksnilol

To be honest, I posted more to annoy types like you than to get attention from James or something.

          • Wolfgar

That’s ironic, I was doing the same. 🙂

          • iksnilol

We’re two sides of the same coin 🙂

Plus, I am pretty sure James has filed a restraining order on me.

          • Wolfgar

            LOL 🙂

          • iksnilol

Like, I come a 1000 meters near his house warning shots will ring. If I somehow make it to 500 meters there’s going to be at least one and a half SWAT squads oon speed dial.

  • Don Ward

    So the obvious question is…

Can I get a coupler and put together two Magpul Drum magazines?

    • Black Dots

      God bless you.

    • PK

Trying to one-up the Beta-C nutsack, are you?

    • Swarf

I think we’ve got a winning product idea on our hands here for those guys.

      Gun Nutz.

  • Rusty S.

Nice FN “collectors series” there, James.

    • Graham2

Nice to see someone pay attention to the gun stuff here, not just James’ chest, arms, quiff etc!

  • Andrew Miller

I pondered buying one “just to have”.
Same reason to have the Glock extended 9mm magazines.
I sold my last AK and along with it, the Norinco Drum I had forever.
    So…
Do I “need” one of these?
    I don’t know.
But if I’m someplace they’re available and have the cash in hand, I’ll probably get one “just because”.

    • Steve

This is exactly why I have one sitting in my ammo locker…

      • JumpIf NotZero

I have one for retail in November. One for keeping.

Only thing I could even remotely find it useful for is inside a vehicle or something.

  • Martin M

James, you really need to yell while dumping. It helps in more than one way. It ups the awesome factor, and makes the slo-mo audio doubleplusgood!

    Keep up the good work.

  • Big Daddy

Bought one for an AR pistol. Works great, no failures. A little difficult to load but so what. I’ll try a Maglula next time. I like it. A little pricey but the quality is there and the engineering and design is amazing. The weight is not an issue really it’s at the balance point of a well designed AR15. I hope they make an AK 47 one for my Mutant and KS47.

  • Mattie Dimes

So Magpul figured out how to make a Surefire Mag5-60 that: costs the same (msrp), won’t fit in any mag carrier, is harder to load, won’t hold 300blk, weighs more, but is a bit shorter, and it only took them like 3 extra years to do it?

Sounds like they are really keeping their collective noses to the grindstone over there!

    • Anonymoose

      And it works reliably!

      • Black Dots

        Oh details, details…

      • DanGoodShot

So do all my surefire 60s. There was an issue with the first gens nose diving. If you have one that does it, contact surefire and they will have you ship it to them and take care of it. Mine run flawlessly and I’ve put em through hell and used em with one of those bump fire do hickeys. Not one problem. I was also able to find em for $68 on sale!

  • mrsatyre

I bought one for sh*ts and giggles, but Christ on a bike is it a pain in ass to load. Up to round 40 it’s merely tedious. After 40…good luck, chump. Maybe I got a lemon, who knows. Anyway, even if it did load to full capacity without any hiccups, it takes way too long. I use a Maglula bench loader and I can load thirty magazines in the time it takes to load this by hand. One. Round. At. A. Time.

    • Big Daddy

I’m going to try a Maglula next time. Everything has it’s pluses and minuses. It’s what the individual decides. Will I buy another one? Probably not unless I see one on sale very low priced. But it works for me on my 7.5″ pistol, does not add a lot of weight because it is in a balance point on the gun. PSA was just about giving them away with the price + shipping of 1000 rounds of .223. I had just bought mine a a bunch of ammo the day before.

  • skaneateles

Swamp Monster in that puddle at 5:02.

  • gordon

Sure would be nice if it worked with WSSMs and or SOCOMs.

  • Ed Forney

Sounds like more ammo for the anti-gun folks.

    • M-dasher

yup, lets all go back to single shot muzzle loaders so the antis dont get upset……

    • iksnilol

      How is that relevant?

Antigun folk don’t use guns, so what does increased ammo capacity do for them?

      • Ed Forney

They want the magazine capacity reduced.

    • Edeco

They can’t be reasoned with anyway, best to just let them know we’re unreasonable too. If it were up to me we’d be demanding (full) auto and HE grenades back (you know what I mean, new, on-the-rack, over-the-counter). Never get it but it would be a good experience.

  • SimonSays

I found it really interesting to see that the majority of the darker Wolf casings were deflected rearward and the brass coloured brand apparently hit the deflector and was ejected forward. Nice to see what a variety in powder can archieve.

    • Giolli Joker

Aren’t Wolf casings made of steel?
If so they’re probably somewhat lighter than the brass ones.

  • Marco Antonio Gonzalez

So this make a rifle the opposite of the Henry: you load all week long and shoot on Sunday

    • DanGoodShot

Ha! That was funny right there!

  • Swarf

Honestly, 2 coupled 30 rounders seems like a smarter bet in all ways except for the extremely minor inconvienence of having to take 1.3 seconds to switch from one to the other.

The coupled mags weigh less, are cheaper, , found anywhere and everywhere, are easier to load, are a better shape ergonomically by a factor of a… lot. And are seperatable back in to their individual mag-nessess for maximum tactical op-selectivity. TM.

    • Nashvone

You missed that 30 round mags are just plain easier to load. That said, drum magazines are scary enough for the anti-gun crowd to make them fun for us to own.

      • Swarf

        I… didn’t.

  • dave

guys and gals, dont you think this is really more a review of his arm muscles than anything else???

  • DanGoodShot

Na. I am really surprised that the surefire 60 didn’t catch on more. I have a couple and they run flawless. Had em a couple years now. No issues leaving loaded, firing prone, inserting on a closed bolt. It’s only 3/4 an inch longer than a 30 pmag and only a bit wider. I got em when I HAD a slidefire stock (fun for a hot minute). I found em on sale for $68 each, shipping included! Personally I don’t like the drum style on an AR. I like the surefire 60. Half the price too if you look hard enough. Also, from what I’ve heard, if you get a surefire that doesn’t run perfectly surefire will take care of you quickly.

  • JoshCalle

I’m really curious as to why it doesn’t work with .300 BLK.

  • Marvin

Once you put the slo mo on I forgot caring anymore. Well enough to jump in here an comment that I FORGOT TO CARE ANYMORErrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr……………

  • Don Ward

So far, 90 percent of the comments have been homoerotic in nature regarding James’ physical attributes. 9 percent have expressed skepticism about the practical nature of this device. And we have one remark by JumpifSnotzero who says this might even be too tacticool for him but he owns a pair anyway.

That’s why I love the TFB community.

    • iksnilol

TL;DR: Our priorities are on point.

    • The_Champ

Haha, yep, a perfect summary of the comments.

    • Edeco

      Gun Culture 2.0 😀

      • Swarf

        2.00woooOOOo

  • zaqzilla

The best thing about a 60 round mag is how much it angers anti-gun people.

  • Paul White

I mean I’m glad they work, but holy crap, I can buy a lot of normal mag puls for that. Hard pass.

  • LetsTryLibertyAgain

I’m sure the quality is excellent as I’ve come to expect from Magpul, but I’d have much rather had Magpul polymer versions of the 60 and 100 round Surefire quad stack magazines. I suspect this is one of the times that patents work to effectively prevent technical innovation and deny consumers new and better products. Maybe Magpul should have made a 223 box magazine that stacks the ammunition five rounds wide. Maybe I should 3D print a few of those to test the concept, apply for my own patent and go sip fruity drinks on an island while cashing the royalty checks. Until then, I think I’ll just buy Magpul 40 round double stack magazines.

  • Lowell Barton Sr.

The cost is reasonable,I question the value.

  • Diamondback

    Not worth it.
