SIG SAUER Introduces 308 Win Match Grade Elite Performance Ammunition

Once again SIG has added to it’s ever expanding line of handgun and rifle ammunition. This offering is a match grade .308 in the “Elite Performance” line. This round uses the highly successful 168 grain Match King bullet.

This from Sierra:
MatchKings® are the pride of the Sierra bullet family, unmatched worldwide and truly world class in all respects. Competitive shooters have relied on the consistent accuracy of Sierra’s MatchKings® for decades, resulting in a history of state, national and world records that is the envy of our competitors.

Sierra MatchKing® bullets have set the standards worldwide for consistent accuracy in handguns as well as rifles. Since the introduction of the high performance Remington XP-100 and similar handguns chambering larger rifle cartridges, all 30 caliber MatchKings® have been used in handgun silhouettes and long-range target competitions. Sierra’s famous MatchKing® design assures superb accuracy, flat trajectory, and high momentum delivery with low sensitivity to crosswinds at all ranges.

Sierra .308 Match King

Sierra .308 Match King

Over the years I’ve shot thousands of rounds of various brands of .308 ammo loaded with the 168 grain Match King for practice as well as being the issued ammo for my PD SRU team. This new SIG SAUER 308 Win Open Tip Match (OTM) round has a muzzle velocity of 2,700 fps with a muzzle energy of 2,719 ft-lbs.

I have some of these new rounds coming for testing out to 500 yards using my Ruger Precision Rifle with a Nikon scope as well as an ATN night vision scope. Our local PD range is limited to 500 yards.Shooting here at night has to be done on the PD range. I’ll let you all know how it performs. From past experience with this round I expect a high degree of weight retention and overall very good performance.

Press Release from SIG:

Newington, NH (August 2, 2016) – SIG SAUER, Inc. expands its Match Grade Elite Performance Ammunition line for rifles with the addition of a 168gr 308 Win loading. Featuring a 168gr Sierra MatchKing® bullet, the SIG SAUER 308 Win Open Tip Match (OTM) round has a muzzle velocity of 2,700 fps with a muzzle energy of 2,719 ft-lbs.

SIG SAUER engineers designed this round to excel in today’s precision autoloading platforms as well as bolt action rifles. The temperature-stable propellant in this cartridge delivers consistent muzzle velocity in all weather conditions, and premium-quality primers ensure minimum velocity variations. All SIG SAUER rifle ammunition is precision loaded on state-of-the-art equipment that is 100% electromechanically monitored for geometric conformity and charge weight consistency. The shell case metallurgy is optimized in the SIG Match Grade OTM cartridge to yield consistent bullet retention round to round.

“Retailers have been asking us for additional calibers in our Match Grade rifle ammunition due to the shortage of supply in the market,” said Dan Powers, president of the SIG SAUER Ammunition Division. “Our new 308 Win Match Grade OTM Elite Performance Ammunition delivers the accuracy and reliability precision shooters require and will help SIG retailers meet customer demand.”

All Elite Performance Ammunition is manufactured in the United States by SIG SAUER to the same exacting standards as the company’s premium pistols and rifles. For more information, visit

Sig’s 10mm Auto ammo is pretty hot, no complaints with their ammo line at all.

    • BillC

I was getting 1.2 MOA with bad eyesight on w/ a 4x optic with their subsonic 220gr 300BLK load on an 9.5″ barrel w/ a suppressor. Super happy with it.

    • My experience with all the calibers has been positive. I’ll be testing these as soon as the rounds arrive.

An off topic question to the author, or any other, if I may.
I heard today of a UK ammo company called Primetake. I’ve trying to find any decent reviews about their products, especially their Omega line of match grade ammo with no luck. Does anyone have any personal or other experience with them? Any help would be most usefull. Thank you for any responses and please forgive my off topic

    *eagerly awaits the .308 MCX*

    • Chris Cosby

I’d be really interested in that as well.

But will it unseat Federal Gold Metal Match 168 grain at that pricepoint?

    • Twilight sparkle

Exactly what I was wondering, where did you see a price?

      • JoelC

Cabela’s has it for $31 for a box of 20. I imagine if there is a sale it will be closer to the $25-28 that Federal gold metal match tends to run.

    • I’ll be testing the SIG ammo shortly

If this is anything like their handgun defense loads it’ll be the cheapest on the market. Which appeals to me greatly!
