A military group requested a heat shield on the barrels to protect slings, cables and pouches. Since the Micro Gun is so short it would be easy to swing it and have it touch something. Here is what Empty Shell came up with. It looks slick.

It strikes me you could scallop the ports a bit to help force air along the barrels to aid with cooling. They might have done this already but I can’t really tell from the photo whether the contours are simply how it was machined, or “with intent.”

  • They should stick to cuts parallel to the barrel if they are trying to keep things like slings and wires from touching the barrels. The slots angled or perpendicular would allow both to still touch the barrels more easily than the perpendicular slots.

If they chamfered or beveled parallel slots the right direction they might even get then to draw air in like a turbine.

Or they might figure out a way to make it whistle…..

        • Rick O’Shay

It’s a warning whistle! Totally a feature and not a bug!

          Instead of “BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTT” its “SSSHHHRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHH”

    Switch over to gas, people.

  • aka_mythos

I can’t help but feel that’s a good amount of extra spinning mass.

  • Garfield3000

Wait, so this thing is actually being shopped to actual militaries?

    • Squirreltakular

      Gosh, I hope so.

    • SGT Fish

i honestly doubt it. the ARES Shrike was supposedly sold to “unmentionable” militaries. but good luck ever seeing one being fielded. marketing stunt at best. or their air national guard buddy suggested it

  • gunsandrockets

Presumably that shield is made of some kind of plastic or other nonconductive material?

    • Christian Hedegaard-Schou

      Looks a lot like a machined G10 material. It’s pretty heat-resistant stuff.

      • Matthew Mcdonald

I believe it’s 3D printed material for testing.

        • Giolli Joker

Most likely, the guy of Empty Shell is pretty good at it.
There’s some interesting evidence on their Instagram page.

    Needs moar shark mouth!

Are thos M-lock compatible slots on the side? 😉

I would have put air scoops the pull air in and force it out the front instead of having the front closed off….

  • The_Automator

    “A military group?”

    Yeah, okay.

  • SGT Fish

I give them props for recreating the xm214 microgun. But I don’t know why they decided to re-name it, and I think trying to sell this thing as a practical hand held weapon is just plain silly. Sell it for what it really is. A smaller lightweight m134 and call it a day. they’ll still sell a bunch of them to SOTs and maybe some specialized military and police forces.

It’s not the Microgun from the past, it’s redesigned from the ground up.

Well, it’s a done deal now. Hollyweird will remake “Rambo” as a returning sandbox veteran and he will have one of these. Some “metro” like Ryan Philippe will play the role.
