Federal HST Practice & Defend Packs

Federal HST Ammo

Federal Premium Ammunition (aka Federal) announced a new product offering was now shipping. Called the HST Practice & Defend Combo Packs, these boxes contain both HST self defense rounds and American Eagle FMJ loads.

HST is the company’s premium brand of self defense and law enforcement ammunition. HST is widely respected by many people for its proved performance both in testing and “on the street.” American Eagle is a line of affordable practice ammunition also made by Federal. I’ve used both HST and American Eagle ammo in a variety of calibers and firearms and have had good performance from each. For what its worth, HST is on my short list of preferred carry ammo for both self defense and law enforcement use.

Federal is offering the combo packs in four different handgun calibers: .380 ACP, 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP. For all of the rounds, except the .380 ACP, the bullet weights in both HST and American Eagle are the same. Each package includes 20 rounds of HST and 100 rounds of American Eagle.

The packages are:

  • .380 ACP: 99 grain HST with 95 grain American Eagle, MSRP is $80.95
  • 9mm (aka 9×19, 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum): 124 grain HST and American Eagle; MSRP $67.95
  • .40 S&W: 180 grain HST and American Eagle; MSRP $84.95
  • .45 ACP: 230 grain HST and American Eagle; MSRP $96.95

I won’t buy it. But it’s a great option for the buy who shoots their carry gun once or twice a year. The downside is they aren’t likely to test their gun with the HSTs. Not that they would anyway.

No 147gr 9mm? Not worth it then!!!

    • Rodney Jenkins

If you’re shooting 147gr 9mm why not just use 40 cal?

  • zardoz711

    $68 for 20 HSTs and 100 AEs???
I can get 2 boxes of HSTs and a box of AEs for the same price plus shipping!
Or 1 box of HSTs and 3 boxes of AEs shipping included!
Is this just a gimmick?? or will the shelf price be considerably cheaper?

I’ve purchased Federal packages like this online and the cost was a bit better than buying separate boxes of AE FMJ and HST JHP online. So, I’m assuming market pricing would be more reasonable than MSRP, otherwise why bother?

  • J.T.

Seems like a good way of separating idiots from their money. With the 9mm, for less than what they are charging, I can get 100 rounds of 124 gr FMJ and 50 rounds (as opposed to 20) of 124 gr HST.

  • flyingburgers

Are the 20 rounds of HST still packaged in that impossible to open plastic box?

    • Gary Kirk

Just use the practice ammo to open the hsts…

    • JSIII

      I hate those boxes

  • El Duderino

Those prices…I just bought a 50rnd LE box of 9mm HSTs for $26 and 50rnd boxes of 124gr practice ammo run about $13/ea. Neat concept for the casual shooter but no high volume shooter/gun nut is going to go ga-ga for that.

Wait a second $68 for 100 rounds of American Eagle which should be about a total of $30.00 and (20) rounds of HST which at most is $25.00…buy them separate and save the $ 22.00
