Suppressor Spotlight: Curtis Tactical

In the third installment of the ‘Spotlight’ series we bring you Curtis Tactical – quite literally a “Mom and Pop” operation. And that is exactly how owner Joe Jones and his wife like to operate. Besides periodic crunch times when Joe needs to hire part time help to run the machines making baffles, he and his wife are perfectly happy running a silencer business on their own. “I don’t want to get any bigger; I like being able to make exactly what our customers want,” said Jones.

Sitting just west of Dayton and north of Cincinnati in Lewisburg, OH, Jones has been developing, producing and selling custom silencers for almost a decade. After a fire destroyed most of their shop about three years ago, Jones had to shut down operations to rebuild. So, over the course of a painfully slow two years, he dreamed up new silencer designs and entertained custom project ideas from customers who had unique requests.

“Almost everything we make is a custom project made to order,” says Jones. Although he has just started carrying a line of pistol suppressors, his mainstay comes from those customers who call the shop with an idea. “You name it, we will find a way to suppress it,” said Jones.

Case in point: When Jones’ friend came to him looking to suppress a M3 Grease Gun, he didn’t think twice. After some time planning and designing, he turned around and built a fully functional Grease Gun suppressor in about a day. And it sounds great – the slow rate of fire and subsonic 45 ACP makes the M3 a worthy host.

Part of Curtis Tactical’s ability to manufacture custom projects quickly comes from the fact that Jones developed a baffle system that can be used across multiple platforms without the need for a lot of retooling. As an added benefit, the baffles are all linked/encapsulated to make cleaning and servicing a snap for the end user.

Aside from their custom projects, Curtis Tactical will also upgrade customers silencers with new baffle stacks that are made by other manufacturers. Whether they have been damaged, underperforming or the original manufacturer is unable to help, Jones can make almost any suppressor new again.

Jones has been a master gunsmith, a builder of both custom rifles and 1911’s and now suppressors for almost two decades. And his experience shows in the quality of his work. Each project is professionally built and refined. Not only that, but Jones’ stands behind all of his work: “I have a lifetime guarantee on all my silencers,” said Jones. “If you can wear out one of my cans, I’ll fix it for free.”

Curtis Tactical just started offering an integrally suppressed Sig Sauer MPX. Coming in well below $1K on a customer supplied gun, Jones offers both ported barrel and non-ported barrel versions. In the YouTube video below, Jones tests both 124gr and 147gr 9mm in the MPX with excellent results.

The one project I am most interested in from Curtis Tactical? Jones is developing a 9mm integrally suppressed bolt gun that will accept Glock magazines. Sign me up.

Although Curtis Tactical’s plans don’t include dominating the US silencer market, if you have a wild idea to suppress a gun sitting in the back of your safe, give Jones a call. My guess is that he is going to walk you through your options and design something that looks and functions great – all at a very affordable price.
