New S&W M&P 15-22 Sport MOE SL Rifles

S&W M&P 15-22 Sport MOE SL

Smith & Wesson announced an expansion of its popular M&P 15-22 Sport line with the addition of the MOE SL rifles. The new models follow on the heels of the company’s revamping of the M&P 15-22 line at the beginning of the year.

At that time, the company added Magpul M-LOK handguards and MBUS sights to the guns. Now, the company has gone a bit father.

The new guns will come in two varieties: all black and black with flat dark earth furniture. In addition to the MBUS sights and M-LOK hand guard, both of the new rifles will come with the following additional Magpul products:

  • MOE SL carbine stock
  • MOE SL pistol grip
  • M-LOK Type 2 rail covers

The SL stands for ‘slim line.’ Take a look at Timothy Yan’s review of the furniture here.

The MOE SL stock is an adjustable length buttstock that has an angled rubber butt pad. Magpul incorporated a sloped comb to improve cheek weld.

I dislike the A2 grip on the standard M&P 15-22 Sport, so the new MOE SL grip is a nice update. It has a more vertical angle along with an rougher texture for better grip. Additionally, Magpul states it is slimmer than an A2.

Both models of M&P 15-22 carry a suggested retail price of $499.

This will make the Gun even more friendly for kids! This gun also looks a lot better than the original.

  • Suppressed

My LGS had the M-Lok ones of these (newest until now) for $399 and even though I can’t rationally justify the purchase, I almost walked out with one everytime I went in there. When they get one of these it’s going to be Ben harder, I assume they’ll probably sell for $425-$440 street price?

As a gun newb, I’ve been looking at the M&P15-22 as my first rifle/second gun for a while to go along with my M&P9. They just keep coming out with new models. I almost bought a Sport, but now they release this.

    What is the release date?

    • TheNotoriousIUD

I love mine, its cheap to fire and just a fun little gun.

    • Cymond

Alternatively, consider something like a cheap polymer lower and a rimfire upper. I have a New Frontier LW-15 and CMMG upper. It might cost more, but you have the option to run a centerfire upper in the future, or running the rimfire upper on a nicer lower.
It gives you room to grow. The S&W M&P15-22 is mostly proprietary.

      • imtoomuch

That’s a good idea. I don’t think I’ll ever build an AR though and if I do I’d still want the M&P15-22. In which case I’d just start an AR from scratch, but thank you for the input!

Get a 10/22 for half the cost and put the money to an AR15.

      • SirOliverHumperdink

Yeah, but if an AR is your ‘go to’ weapon, makes sense that feel and the controls are the same. Also, a bone stock 10/22 plain old suuucks. Open your wallet for more to upgrade the barrel, stock trigger, mag release and bolt handle and spring kit, like I did, and I could have had the S&W ready to run out of the box.

If you’re going to spend 500 on a 22, get a Browning SA22 and then you have Nippon made precision (and it looks a lot nicer).

          • SirOliverHumperdink

I actually have the Norinco ATD22 copy. Maybe one day I’ll get a Brownie. I’ve seen some older ones at gunshows, but they were 22 shorts.

      • imtoomuch

Half the fun of the M&P15-22 is the look. And all of the reviews I’ve seen say they’re dead reliable.

      • iksnilol

Get a Marlin 795 for half the cost of the 10/22 and save even more money.

  • TheNotoriousIUD

    Good looking gun.
I have one of the earlier models and its a hell of a lot of fun to shoot with a can on it and soooo much cheaper on ammo than my M-16.

  • xebat

That gap between the back of the grip and the lower receiver is rustling my jimmies.

    • politicsbyothermeans

Glad I’m not alone. That looks awful and seems like it is begging to get caught on stuff or at least collect gunge.

      • TheNotoriousIUD

Or allow moisture to collect possibly corroding the bolt head.

        • politicsbyothermeans

It doesn’t even look like it would work as a bottle opener.

  • Joey JoJo Jr.

Got one of the earlier M&P-15/22’s with Magpul furniture. It has been an excellent training and fun gun, over thousands of rounds, most with a Gemtech suppressor. Smith is onto something with this design, as it flat out works!

Hey guys and gals. sdnnsports has all the colored rifles for $299 currently. I just bought my wife and kids each a rifle.
