Savage Arms announced several new semi-automatic rifles for rimfire cartridges this year. All of them are based on the original A17 rifle the company rolled out last year. One of the new rifles is chambered for the .22 WMR, while the other three are variations on the A17 that is chambered for the .17 HMR round.

A22 Magnum

The new A22 Magnum is very similar to the original A17 while instead being chambered for the .22 WMR (aka 22 Magnum.) As with the A17, the action is a specially designed delayed blowback system that handles the relatively high pressures of the lightweight round.

The carbon steel barrel is 21″ long and has button rifling. The lightweight aluminum receiver is case hardened and the bolt is hard chromed. For this rifle, Savage uses a black synthetic stock and a 10 round rotary magazine. The suggested retail price is $473.

A17 Variants

For 2016, Savage has three new variants on the A17. The first is a scoped package called the A17 XP. This is a standard A17 rifle paired with 3.5-10x 36 Bushnell rimfire scope. The optic is mounted and boresighted, so it should be on paper out of the box. The MSRP on this model is $578.

Another variant is the A17 Target Sporter Laminate. This rifle replaces the synthetic stock with a wood laminate stock with a matte grey finish. It retails for $571.

The final rifle is the A17 Target Thumbhole. Similar to the Sporter above, this model replaces the original stock with a wood laminate thumbhole stock. It is also finished in a matte gray color. It is the most expensive of the bunch at a suggested $631.

Savage seems to have succeeded with a semi-auto 17 HMR where others failed.
