Destructive Devices DDI-12 Shotgun

DDI12

Jim Grant of Burst Review, got to play with Destructive Devices new DDI-12 AK style shotgun. It is a converted Saiga 12.

For those not familiar with the DDI-12, it is a modified Saiga 12 style shotgun. It has some interesting features out of the box. Such as left side charging handle, AR style safety selector, AR milspec buffer tube and a fiber ptic front side and rear peep sight built into the dust cover. MSRP is $599. Wow that is pretty inexpensive if you are looking at Vepr-12 or Saiga. Plus it is already setup with pistol grip and stock unlike the Catamount Fury.

That’s actually really competitive with the Catamount Fury, aka the previous budget Saiga/Vepr alternative. The price won’t go as low during sales, but you get a lot better aftermarket support and better base features.

    • Vhyrus

The catamount was hot garbage, though. At least this appears to run half the time.

  • BattleshipGrey

I’m pretty impressed by the MSRP considering all the mods.

  • Vhyrus

Hmmm…. this or the hella better VEPR 12 for $100 bucks more? Tough call… oh wait, no its not!

    • Joshua

Honest question (I don’t know much about box fed shotties) – if this is a new product, presumably upgraded from a saiga, how do you know the vepr 12 is worth more than the $100.00 difference in price. I am going to go google it, but agin, if its new, I don’t expect to find a direct comparison. I’m interested in something that could be used for 3-gun, but not totally worthless for HD or a zombie apocalypse. Thanks in advance.

      • Vhyrus

vepr has auto bolt hold open, straight in mags (not ak rock & lock), built in dust cover top rail, and reliably cycles all standard ammo out the box. Check out MACs review of it. Basically the only thing this has going for it is the charging handle (but only for right handed) and the safety.

        • USMC03Vet

Superior Sights, safety, stock, cheap mags, left side charging, and a good warranty.

No conversion needed. Uses Siaga handguards and any stock you want that uses a castle nut. It has a lot going for it.

          • Yeah, aftermarket support, especially readily available, reasonably priced magazines is kind of a big deal.

    • JumpIf NotZero

      Not even close.

No magwell – DO NOT BUY.

      • Joshua

What? Which has no magwell? Sorry to sound noob, but isnt magwell only an advantage if flared and the none magwell opening isnt? Or is it because you like magwell grip?

        • JumpIf NotZero

A magwell is 100% required on box shotgun mags. They’re loose tolerance, need to be fit to the gun, and the rock in method is so bad with the size and shape. Not to mention that inserting a full 12ga mag on a closed bolt is a joke at the best case.

Soft 12ga rimmed ammo IS NOT supposed to feed from a box mag – if you must insist on doing so, a magwell coming down off the receiver is required for this application.

      • Bulletmods

Can you retro fit something? The MOLOT guns are going for $699. Unless this was offered for $500 I don’t see a point.

    • gunsandrockets

$100 more? I thought the Vepr 12 MSRP was $230 more.

      829 – 599 = 230

    • Reef Blastbody

Where are you finding VEPR 12s for $699? Atlantic has them on sale at the moment for $799, so a $200 price delta.

  • Cal.Bar

Yeah… Destructive Devices…. who thought of THAT one. It screams…. please ban me to the powers that be. More importantly, it screams don;t bother looking at me customers because you either can’t have it in your state or you have to go through the tax stamp hassle.

    • BobinMI

I’m gonna guess that you don’t follow AK’s very closely. DDI has been making a lot of noise. They make the only american ak I would trust.

      • SP mclaughlin

It’s kind of like the Chevy Nova in Latin America all over again.

      • USMC03Vet

It’s a parts kit. Supposedly this summer they’ll be switching over to full US production due to volume of broken/unusable parts kits they import. I have a DDI and it’s pretty good for a Hungarian parts kit build.

        • BobinMI

Yours may be the case. They have switched and sold a lot of 100% American made AK’s including a hammer forged receiver.

      • Treyh007

Agreed, very good quality AK’s at great prices, very popular in the AK world right now. I believe they bought out Waffen Werks.

  • Blackhawk

Yep, the main features that make the Saiga-12 attractive to me: right-side charging handle and safety – are gone from this model.

    • Vhyrus

Get a vepr, thank me later.

    • Joshua

In guessing u r left handed? Me too, am interested in your opininion.

  • Alex Agius

In all fairness to the atf that only occurred after much lobbying by antigunners

    • Mark

In all fairness to the people incinerated, sniped, and machine-gunned in Waco…

      • Alex Agius

        No debate on that

  • gunsandrockets

The spike in prices was bound to goad someone into creating new supply to meet the new demand.

    Advantage: Free Market!

    • Cal S.

I regret nothing, save that I have but one upvote to give to this comment.

  • Cal S.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold the phone. Are you telling me that a company is actually trying to *match* the MSRP of a cheap import on a brand new gun?!?!

I’m aghast. I had no idea new guns could be produced these days with an MSRP lower than $1,500!!

    • borekfk

Especially evil black uber-tactical pieces for tier-1 operators.

  • USMC03Vet

Thankfully right now the ATF can’t just arbitrarily reclassify firearms because of the company name so it doesn’t matter what the name of the US company is called.

  • Leadsled

    Takes Saiga muzzle devices?

    • Nicholas C

Yes. Jim just received the SGM Tactical muzzle brake and choke.

  • Joseph Chetwood

Really like the price point on this beast. It will definitely draw some attention with such reasonable pricing. I’ll wait for more testing though.

  • Spikey DaPikey

    Want one !!

  • Leigh Rich

    And Street Sweeper

  • RickOAA .

Cool, though I’m not sure I like the LH charging handle.
