Stack-On announced a new line of rifle safes called the Armorguard series. The new safes come in four sizes with stated capacities up to 64 guns. The largest safe is 72″ high while the others are 55″ tall. All of adjustable interiors.

Each of the safes uses an electronic lock and four way 1.5″ live action locking bolts. The company states that all of the safes are fire resistant for 30 minutes at 1,400˚F.

Stack-On is known to many people for its lines of competitively priced gun storage solutions. For some, this may cause concern that these safes do not offer protection as good as other brands. While that may or may not be true, my research and experience suggest that any lockable container is substantially better than none for protecting valuables.

Last year, I spent quite a bit of time researching safes and the fire and theft resistance ratings that are claimed by different manufacturers. My conclusion was that very few of the ratings listed by all of the manufacturers could be relied on, and comparisons of one company’s rating against another’s were nearly useless.

However, as a practical matter a gun or other valuable is less likely to be stolen when locked up. Additionally, firearms and valuables in a heavy box that is difficult to carry away (such as a safe properly bolted to the foundation) are even less likely to be stolen. Unless you are a high profile target that has garnered the attention of professional thieves, it is unlikely that one brand of safe will provide more protection than another. All of them should work as a solid deterrent.
