Ruger Adds an Inch

Ruger Gives you an extra inch

Sturm, Ruger & Co. announced they added an option for lovers of the SR22 pistol that gives them an extra inch of barrel length. The new 4.5″ barrel length SR22 pistol has a long-slide look that has a bit of a sci-fi vibe to it. A longer barrel and slide do add to the weight of the gun, though the additional 1.2 ounces (to a total of 18.7 ounces unloaded) is hardly a deal breaker for most people.

As with the other pistols in the line, this one is chambered for the .22 LR. Each magazine holds ten rounds. The new SR22 variant has a black polymer frame and a black anodized slide. The overall length of the gun is 7.4″ compared to the 6.4″ length of the original form factor pistol.

Three dot adjustable sights are standard on the longer gun. It is not California compliant. It is not know if Ruger has any plans to introduce a threaded barrel version of the gun as the company did with the original SR22. Additionally, the company has not stated if other slide colors will be introduced. Currently, Ruger offers the standard length SR22 with a silver colored slide. It is possible that Talo or another distributor will order some limited run SR22 pistols.

As might be anticipated, you have to pay more to enjoy the additional length. The 4.5″ barrel version of the pistol carries a suggested retail price of $439. The standard length pistol has an MSRP of $415.

Does anyone know if it will be compatible with the current SR22? Would love the option of a longer barrel and slide!

    • kipy

Just by looking at it I’d say its gotta be compatible. If not they dropped the ball.

now, make this, and the Walther P-22, with grips that humans can use, and I will love them 😉

    • Anonymoose

And make it not a jamomatic piece of crap. :^)

      • Laserbait

The 2 that we have have been flawless in function. My buddies have several as well, all perfect. The only issue that we’ve ever had is crap ammo, that won’t even work right in my MKII’s. So I’d say that they already made them not a “jamomatic piece of crap”.

        • Anonymoose

The SR-22s I’ve handled have had serious fit and finish issues as well as magazine issues.

          • Laserbait

Maybe you found some chineese knockoffs. 🙂 I’ve looked at about 30 or so of them before getting the 2 for my wife and I (consecutive serials), and they all were pretty darn good.

Richard Johnson, I applaud you sir on the numerous sexual innuendos in this piece including both your first and last name.

Yeah, I thought there would have been more jokes in the comments about that.

As per my fighting shotgun lesson plan: barrel inches are like genital inches, a slight change can make a big difference in usability.

  • Anonymoose

I’ve had bad experiences with the SR-22, so idgaf is the made one with a 4.5″ barrel.

“[The new SR-22 variant] is not California compliant.”

In case anyone is interested, as of today NO Ruger .22 self-loading pistol is California compliant.

Of .22 rimfire Ruger handguns, only some DA revolvers remain on the California approved handgun roster. (most single action revolvers are exempt from the roster)

Glad I got my MkIII and SR22 last year. I HaTe this #$#@$ Kommieforina. That said I love my SR22, it’s so darn accurate at 25 yards it’s scary.

    • Cymond

Wow! I stopped keeping track of CA’s problems when we moved out. How/why did they drop off? Did Kamala Harris find some small change, or did Ruger not pay the fee, or what?

      • gunsandrockets

Don’t know why. Perhaps part of SR legal strategy since several makers sued over the handgun roster.

The law in California continues creeping toward prohibition. SF and LA now ban possession of +10 round magazines, and SF mandates handguns be locked up. Lt. Gov. promoting 2016 state referendum of grab bag of gun controls including banning magazine possession and imposing background check for ammo purchase.

    Is the girth the same?

            And still don’t care.

  • Can I get a 4″ LCR (9mm), please?

  • Wetcoaster

And… that makes them Canada legal to boot. Awesome!
