Go from Hipster to Tacticool on your Mac

AT4_1__27510.1436912917.1280.1280

I contend that all Mac users are either open or closet hipsters, despite any evidence to the contrary. However, all you savvy computer users can redeem yourselves with these “laptop decals” from ReFactor Tactical.

Playing on the iconic piece of fruit, the stickers add a dose of healthy tactical-ness to your otherwise pinky-finger-up computing experience. At a cost of only $6.95, its cheaper than your daily Starbucks (or whatever hip coffee joint is now in vogue) triple-shot mocha venti latte, non-whip, no-fat sugar drink masquerading as “coffee.”

Hit the link to be taken to where you can be redeemed. Show me that my (accurate) stereotypes are invalid and there is some hope left for humanity. Or, for those of us using the one true operating system, pick up the stickers and go full-motard.

“triple-shot mocha venti latte, non-whip, no-fat sugar drink”

What does that even mean? I thought coffee was the black liquid you drank at kafanas? Y’know, in those little cups that kinda look like ceramic shot glasses?

Sorry, I just sometimes get a culture shock.

    • ostiariusalpha

Men sitting around on cushions & low benches, drinking hot, obsidian syrup, discussing the days events. vs. People sitting in AC-chilled booths, drinking coffee-flavored milkshakes, while staring at LED screens & not even noticing the person next to them. Can’t imagine why you would feel any disconnect.

      • Grindstone50k

        I like milkshakes

I don’t like talking to strangers

It’s hot here. Over 100F hot. AC and cold drinks are a necessity.

        • ostiariusalpha

It is 103° here today, but that’s not so bad, it’s dry heat. No AC in the shop though, so constant hydration is an enforced rule. I don’t drink any caffeinated beverages regularly, I tend to snap awake in the morning and don’t want to be wound up in the evening.

          • Grindstone50k

Every time I hear someone say “it’s a dry heat” I just want to shove them in an oven. That’s a dry heat too! (Angry Northerner living in a Southern state)

I work swings and I have ADHD. I self-medicate with caffeine.

          • ostiariusalpha

Ha ha! That’s ironic because we were running the burnout oven all day yesterday. The only grace of dry heat is that means the lake isn’t spiking the humidity. Now working in that sh*t will make you want to commit murder.

          • Tassiebush

Seems really funny hearing all this summer talk. I just loaded up the woodheater with more oldgrowth logs for the chilly winters night… Southern hemisphere living.

      • Vitsaus

        You nailed it.

      • iksnilol

Yeah, I just find it overcomplicated. I go to a coffee bar or something to talk with friends. If I have computer work I definitely don’t want to do that in public. People bothering you or people seeing something on your computer that they shouldn’t, that kinda thing.

Though I will have to add, most places do have chairs and sofas now 😛

  • TheNotoriousIUD

I will proudly admit that I often pick up a fancy $7 iced coffee on my way to the range.

    • ostiariusalpha

      Hey man, you earned it.

      • TheNotoriousIUD

Had to switch to iced because its 1000° here.

        • USMC03Vet

It’s a buyers market on the Sun.

    • Grindstone50k

      Mocha frapps erry day

    • James

Bet your groups would shrink if you saved the coffee for after the range trip.

      • TheNotoriousIUD

Problem is if I dont get some coffee theres a good chance I’ll be shooting in traffic on the way to the range.

What if people just want to avoid paying Microsoft for an OS they won’t use anyway? (I’ll admit Dell XPS13/15 developer edition or something similar would be a better choice for that, but still.)
I’m a software engineering student, and prefer Unix derivatives. So Linux, (Free)BSD, OSX, AIX, Solaris, etcetera. Not just to be different, but because my workflow in Linux is a lot faster. No need to start a giant IDE, but instead I just start Vim and call a compiler after editing. Small changes done before said IDE can even be started.
Plus my full development system uses less than 500MB until I open a browser. Means I have more RAM left for useful things.

Anyway, short version: there are other reasons for getting something that’s not a Windows laptop than just being hipster 😛

    • RocketScientist

You ARE aware that you can run Unix-based OS on a non-Mac, right? One that costs a fraction of the price, is upgradeable, and uses standardized non-proprietary hardware?

      • Rogier Velting

Quite so, I’m currently using a Lenovo Z710 with Linux. Notice how I mentioned the XPS13. That’s not a Mac. However, all laptops use mostly proprietary hardware. Besides, Macs ARE upgradable, many use regular socketed CPU’s, regular RAM and several (older models) still use regular SATA HDD’s/SSD’s.
I’m just saying some people don’t want Microsoft to get money for stuff they don’t want anyway. That can be reason enough to get a Mac for some. That and the fact that I don’t want x86(-64) are reason enough for me to consider a fully custom laptop based on a FreeScale CPU.

        • RocketScientist

I still don’t get your logic. You don’t want to pay for an operating system you’re not going to use… So you pay MORE, for a DIFFERENT operating system you’re not going to use? Genius.

          • Rogier Velting

Believe it or not, but the Windows equivalent of a MacBook is about as expensive. And OSX is quite usable, it’s like a less optimised but more polished Linux.
Anyway, some people (myself included) dislike Microsoft. Some even more than they dislike Apple (about equal in my case). See? Not that weird.
Also note I never said I’d buy a Mac, I said I’d build a modern PowerPC laptop. Probably a lot more expensive, but it’d be more useful for what I do anyway (working on machine learning algorithms). Besides, 24 hardware threads at 35.7W 🙂

          • Raven Lee

How is he paying more for a free OS? Genius. Hahaha.!

          • RocketScientist

My god you’re a damn idiot. If you buy a Mac, it comes pre installed with an OS, one that this jackass doesn’t want to use. So that’s identical to the situation he says he’s trying to avoid, namely, buying a windows laptop, and paying money for a pre installed OS he had no intention of using. Only difference is, the Mac will likely cost more. You must not have been in class the week they taught reading comprehension, huh? Probably still recovering from your lobotomy…

          • roguetechie

            Except lol…

He SPECIFICALLY used the word BUILD a power PC Based system… AKA hardware. Now lol last I checked you don’t receive a bill for a copy of OS X the second you buy a single apple compatible component…(even if the jobzniak’s of the world wish they could have it this way)

          • JK

So how does that compare to Ice Cream Sandwich? C++?

          • Rogier Velting

            A few problems with that:
            1) OSX is technically free, it’s the hardware you pay for.
            2) OSX is a Unix style OS, so perfectly usable.
            3) Windows laptops in the same class (ultrabooks and similar laptops) are about as expensive.

And as others also seemed to understand better than you do, I was using that as an example for reasons for not buying a Windows laptop.

      • Raven Lee

You are obviously not a rocket scientist. Linux is free. Yet you claim it costs more than Windows. LOL

Get it now? We are talking OSes as was the author of the article. Yet you focus on hardware. Dumb.

  • JK

Almost makes me want a Mac. Almost…

  • Charlie Taylor

I work at an apple store. A surprising number of my coworkers are gun people. Then again, I AM in Georgia.

  • Vitsaus

I don’t know, some how this seems MORE hipsterish rather than less. The stylized silhouettes sort of remind me of the old iPod commercials… Why just just slap a LaRue sticker on the thing, if you have to adversize, or whatever.

  • Mouldy Squid

All Mac users are hipsters just like all gun owners are spree shooters.

    • rob in katy

If you just add a few letters and remove a few “spree” becomes “pew-pew!”

    • Dan

Hehehe, first butt hurt mac user 😉

      • Mouldy Squid

Nope. Just pointing out the stupidity of painting with a broad brush. You don’t like it when gun owners are called “nuts” or “psychos”.

    • MR

The little candies? Fun little reactive targets when you pop ’em with 22s. Try some Preperation H, it might help with your butthurt. Or just get a sense of humour.

  • Tay Dervis

You guys are trying to sell stickers now?? Haha, what a joke. RIP TFB

    • Dan

      How is TFB selling stickers?

      • Cymond

Strictly speaking, TFB isn’t selling stickers, they’re just plugging them with what appears to be some kind of affiliate link.

        Totally different. Yep.

    • No company pays us for our articles, ever.

For me, it was an opportunity to write my favorite kind of articles – snarky ones.

      • Tay Dervis

Oh outstanding job. Great piece there, guy.

  • wetcorps

How to trigger a Mac vs PC flamewar : the post ^^

    • billyoblivion

Mac v.s. Linux. No one admits to using a PC, it’s just not cool. So uncool even hipsters won’t use it ironically.

      • MR

I wanted to make a shirt with the skeleton Terminator saying “I’m T-600, and I’m a PC”, but now I’m afraid it’s too late, and no one will remember the old “I’m a PC” ads.

  • billyoblivion

    “One True Operating System”?

    You use FreeBSD?

    • MR

“One OS to rule them all
      One OS to find them
One OS to lead them all
And in the darkness bind them!”

IIRC; I just about had to dig out my copy of CLERKS II to remember the words.

  • Bal256

I don’t know who I dislike more. The hipster that sneers while sipping on his Starbucks from behind his Apple product(s) while labeling others as “corporate pigs”, or the Linux / Special Snowflake OS guys who can’t seem to go for more than 5 minutes without announcing how much better they they are than anyone else. My Windows is good enough for TFB and for surfing porn, I don’t really need anything else.

  • Phaedrus

“I contend that all Mac users are either open or closet hipsters, despite any evidence to the contrary.”

Sad that you have such a closed minded way of thinking, there are some Mac users that own guns and carry.

    • JK

I would just assume that’s sarcasm or hyperbole, no reason to get your “social justice” panties in a twist.

  • BlackTalon2000

apple is overpriced junk, it is so silly that people are paying so much money for apple products, its like they have been hypnotized.

  • Noelle Wright Traywick

Dasani sparkling hello sparkle, the POOP makes it sparkle!

  • Bill

I had one on my MacBook, but didn’t think it really appropriate for work, so I took it off and left the Surefire pin-up girl one on. My Pro does very well at maintaining firearms records, writing lesson plans, handling graphics intensive presentations and photo editing. It was way over-priced, but it works for me. Mac support is great, which is good, because I don’t think I’ve had one product that didnt need one tweak before settling down and perking along.

No coffee for me, it’ll stunt my growth and make me all nervous and birdlike. I’m 51.

  • Rogier Velting

I was using that as example for wanting to avoid Windows laptops. But since you don’t seem to grasp the concept of an example, let me make it even simpler.

OSX is better than Windows for quite a few things (including programming and AV stuff). Macs are well built. Macs are not as expensive in comparison as people think. Ergo, there are valid reasons for getting a Mac instead of a Windows system.

Also note that for workstation stuff, most Unixes (Solaris being the main exception) have no limits on RAM and core count, whereas Windows does. This includes OSX. And the Mac Pro is actually pretty cheap for a Xeon and dual GPU workstation 🙂

  • MR

    NICE!

Glock. Or, ideally, a Glock 1911.

  • Markius Fox

Back in 2008, I was looking for a tough laptop that could handle the stress of being deployed (we were given notice of being mobilized for 2010), and capable of playing games decently. I narrowed in on the then new Aluminum Unibody MacBook Pro and bought one in November of that year.

It’s survived all the abuse I have given it, it’s got dings and bends all over the place, and it’s shocked an Apple technician (they can be found at what’s called the Genius Bar) after showing them where another laptop fell onto it and left a fair sized dent in the back of the screen (they never expected that the screen would still work or wouldn’t be broken somehow).

As for the stickers, I’ll stick with the one’s I already have on it: BCM, Magpul, MilSpec Monkey, and ITS Tactical. But for those that have yet to dip their toes into such waters, those stickers might work.

  • Did I just see a Linux fan accuse Mac users in being an isolated, elitist group sneering down at everything that isn’t their type of tech? 0_0

  • LarryNC

I do not know if you are using the word “contend” correctly. And I am not sure why you feel the need to alienate some fellow gun enthusiasts.

  • LarryNC

    What a dumbass article.

  • i1776

I have an idea for several of these posters who obviously had too many frappachinos today…get back to firearms or leave. This isn’t a weenus comparison of OS’s. GTFO.
