A Halfway Decent Piece of Junk – AKU-94 Bullpup Kit

I love bullpup rifles and I really like the idea of AK bullpups, especially considering their construction and lack of a buffer tube. In this round of Forgotten Weapons, Ian (of our own TFB) takes a look at a kit that takes the AK and turns it into a a bullpup. The usual drawbacks to the platform are the usual nasty, gritty trigger, difficult magazine changes, and right-hand only works.

Fortunately, with a bit of ingenuity, the kit can be turned into “halfway decent” from a “piece of junk.” The wire sear engagement is novel and the modification to the grip to index for the magazine is likewise appreciated.

Yes, I do believe that turd was polished.

Woah, it’s just what I wanted. A piece of junk, that with a little bit of ingenuity; can be turned into something “halfway decent!”

So glad I know how to polish a turd now. Thanks so much!

If I understood correctly the grip was like that from the factory (with the mag assist groove). Regarding left hand operation, could you make some brass deflector to prevent the whole “mouthfull of brass” conundrum?

    • Sianmink

It’s less a ‘mouthful of brass’ than a ‘teethfull of charging handle’ problem.

      • iksnilol

Eh, you can just make the charging handle fold. Sorta like a FAL charging handle. Then make a cheek piece to make enough distance so you don’t get the folded charging handle in your mouth.

What did norinco do one theirs? Its a rare bird, but before the 92 ban, they had a bulpup AK that was mostly steel.

          • iksnilol

They did it the easy (read: smart) way. They moved the charging handle forward where the piston is. Type 86S it is called.

    Stop masturbating to buffer tubes!

Holy crap! Ian can shoot right handed and still hit the target. Cool.

    • Ian McCollum

Anyone can do that with some practice…

memories of the good old pre 1989 rifles.

It seems strange to me that the lack of a buffer tube is a remarkable design feature, considering that there are far more firearm designs without buffer tubes than with.
