Savage Shipping New  A17

Savage A17

Announced earlier this year, Savage Arms is now shipping their new semi-automatic rifle chambered for the 17 HMR. The rifle, called the A17, uses a delayed blowback action to overcome the problems that other manufacturers have experienced in making rifles chambered for these rounds.

Savage Arms explains the rifle’s action in this video:

From Savage Arms:

Savage Arms Introduces the A17 Semi-automatic Rifle in 17 HMR

SUFFIELD, Conn. – May 18, 2015 – Savage Arms™ continues its track record of innovation with the all-new A17, the first high-performance semi-automatic rimfire rifle specifically designed for the 17 HMR cartridge. Shipments of this rifle are currently being delivered to distributors.

The A17’s unique delayed-blowback action performs to its peak with new A17 Varmint Tip ammunition, which CCI® developed specifically for the rifle. The A17 also provides safe, reliable operation with standard 17 HMR loads. The hard chrome bolt, case-hardened receiver, 10-round rotary magazine and button-rifled barrel boost performance even further, while the user-adjustable AccuTrigger™ provides a crisp, light pull for the best possible accuracy. I have no use for it but I want one. Something tells me we are going to see all manner of funky after market stocks and magazines for this gun. If it passes the ultimate test the market.

When will the .22mag version come out I wonder?

      Needs moar .17WSM.

“50 years is long enough to wait”… .

Which modern high-performance rimfire cartridge are they referring to?
    .22 WMR 1960 (55 years)?
    5mm RRM 1971 (44 years)?
    .17 HMR 2002 (13 years)?
    .17 WSM 2013 (2 years)?

Also, does the charging handle need to be that big so its inertia can play a role in locking the action?

I want one with iron sights

I like the delay blowback system, but wish we could have it on either .22lr or 9mm cheaply. I’m thinking of port noise reduction benefits for suppressed, subsonic loads.

    Thank you Savage!

We can only dream that the 22LR shortage will inspire them to chamber this in 17HM2 & convince Hornady & Eley to resurrect that lovely little incredibly affordable caliber.

    But a delayed-blowback 17MHR semi-auto is already excellent news.

I’d like to see the condition of the delay pieces after 20-30K rounds.
