Make a Match-Powered Rocket

Adding to the ability for a match to reload 22 LR, you can also use one to create homemade bottle rockets. All it takes is a match, candle, a metric-snotload of patience and a bit of tin foil. Its not for the faint of heart, but this could conceivably allow you to create some interesting firearms or rocket ammo for home-made launchers.

Uh-oh green tipped matches. They must be evil, armor piercing, cop-killing matches.

  • KestrelBike

Used to have little match rocket wars in my friend’s garage, but we used matchbook matches and didn’t require the Manhattan Project assembly style that this video shows… Good grief!

I got a day on the beach for making these in elementary school in the 60’s. Nowadays I’d probably be facing a stay in a court ordered psychiatric assessment center and being interrogated as a mini-ISIS member. Between these for close range urban work, and Estes model rockets for strategic missions, couple with control-line model airplanes for CAS, I was ready. To defend a circle about 45 feet wide.

You’d be okay. One of the science teachers in my building makes these in her class. Her colleague does the Estes model rockets with the older kids.

  • Phillip Cooper

Used to do this all the time as a child. Good times.

    Tennis ball memories……

Be careful with those rockets. They are as lethal as the ones fired into Israel by the Palestinians and look what they received in return…

My nephews and I are going to have a blast with these during Memorial day

    North Korea take notes

I feel like I’ve got to make a cardboard, foil and plastic psuedo gyrojet gun to fire these!

  • Jeff Heeszel

We did this when we were kids. I think we burned ourselves more often than we got a successful launch though!

  • DIR911911 .

someone should repost this video on youtube re titled as “how to make homemade rockets” , then time how long it takes homeland security to knock on your door 🙂

  • gunsandrockets

That’s more of a spigot mortar than a rocket. Which also explains why it performs so well.
