Streamlight ProTac HL USB

Streamlight announced they are now shipping the ProTac HL USB flashlight. These hand held lights are rechargeable via a micro USB port on the body of the light.

The lights are fairly bright: 800 lumens and 10,000 candela at the top end. On high, the lights are rated for 1.5 hours. Lower output levels increase run time to 12 hours.

These flashlights will run on the included Li-ion battery pack or commercially available 18650 rechargeable batteries. The lights will also run on CR123a batteries.

Streamlight states the lights are water and impact resistant. The MSRP runs from $180 – $200. With Streamlight, I’ve noticed that street prices are much lower that retail.

$119 on opticsplanet, $139 and free shipping on amazon. Shipping time 2-4 months in either case.

Has anybody had a good experience with opticsplanet? I’ve tried a couple of times and never received any product from them. I know there are lots of negative stories out there. I’m just curious about positive experiences.

I haven’t had any trouble, and have made 3 or 4 purchases from them, but I’ve read several horror stories. I suppose I’ll keep ordering from them until I have problems myself.

Many of the reported problems seem to have been stock issues. On one occasion I ordered something that was marked in stock but it actually wasn’t, I just didn’t treat it as a big deal.

I’ve made hundreds of purchases in the last 6 years. Never a problem. Shipping a day or two behind Amazon for in-stock items but I always check them for price and delivery schedule.

I like that this has the Streamlight programming feature that lets you change which modes are available. I found this on their website:

“Option 4 (Used in lights like the ProTac HL® USB)
    -High/Strobe/Low (factory default)
    -High only

Being able to lock out the strobe or make it a single mode light with high only is great.

I’ll stick with the Streamlight Microstream & rechargeable Eneloop ULSD AAA for $20, thanks; they work great. I have to recharge it about once every 6 months, so digging out the battery charger & plugging it in isn’t exactly a repetitive chore (& I bought an 8-pack of ’em so there’s plenty lying around)…

They’re absolutely excellent little flashlights too.

    • Cymond

Yeah, but there’s no comparison between the Microstream’s 35 lumens (360 candela) and this light’s 800 lumens (10,000 candela).

      • Blake

        Fair enough. Horses for courses.

I like Streamlight but there is literally no reason to get this instead of a Fenix UC35
