  • The answer is 4. For anyone who doesn’t want to sit through 3 minutes of chatter and pulsing music.

    • Rusty Shovel

      Thank you!

      • Mike

        Yes, Thank you!

    • Anomanom

Ok, so i was close. I was guessing it was whatever amounted to about 2 feet of water.

    • Keith R

No, the answer is five. There were ten balloons, and after the shot, five were left intact. Four were hanging with leaks, and one more was on the ground.

      • gunslinger

did they put the first one back up for the “explination?” because i couldn’t count 6 undamaged balloons. i only counted 9 of the black zip ties/balloons.

didn’t this guy do a bulletproof desert episode too? whipped cream, chocolate syrup and pudding? one of the “guests” guesses right it seems.

The sensationalism and suspense building has to go. As if commercials don’t waste enough time, they have to waste more with all that crap. I gave up on TV a long time ago.

      • Panzercat

They have to have you watch their video for X number of seconds before they get viewer credit and payout for your visit.

Good thing I wear 5 layers of balloons filled with water. Its National Institute of Clownin’ Around rated to 44MAG level silliness.

I also carry some tactical silly string as well.

  • Fruitbat44

Good lord. Well I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised given forensic ballistics involving discharging a firearm into a water tank, but subconsciously I was expecting it to punch through the lot.
I suppose the total sum of human knowledge has been (very) slightly increased by this, and you can dazzle you mates at the pub quiz if the question comes up, “Which will give you more protection in a gunfight: a car door or four water filled balloons?”

Mythbusters did a show where they tested this, I’m pretty sure anything supersonic has a tough time with air/water density change. I think a .50 shattered & wasn’t lethal after about 3 ft.

    • MadKaw69

I remembered that too. I wonder if a round ball out of a muzzle loader would make it through all of them?

    • G0rdon_Fr33man

Try shooting your Glock underwater in your swimming pool. The bullet makes it about 2 feet and just drops to the floor.

  • Riot

What would a heavy subsonic .45 acp do I wonder

    • G0rdon_Fr33man

Worse. In the order of magnitude 44 mag vs 45 acp in terms of kinetic energy. You would probably see different results with different projectiles, high ballistic coefficient fmj would fare much better than any lead or hollow point.

      • Riot

I’d heard tests had shown large a slow to retain their shape better and not dissipate their energy as quickly than high velocity when fired into liquid.

    • phuzz

This wouldn’t be a difficult thing to test for yourself.

  • NxSW

Guess good ol’ Nat Geo can’t afford hearing protection for these poor people.

  • Tassiebush

The results would be quite different if they were condoms filled with water. Those things are built to take a real pounding…

    • badwolf

i saw what you did there…

      • Tassiebush

  • FightFireJay

Wow, NatGeo is now doing horribly drawn out, overly dramatic, reality style tv programing? We, as a species, are slipping.

    • Bill

Jaques Cousteau is turning in his grave

  • Just sayin…

There’s something pornographic about the way Dude handles that water balloon.

  • uisconfruzed

    Was that a hollow point?
    It’d make a difference.

  • Geoff a well known Skeptic

Can we try again with a 147 gr 9mm ball? Geoff Who is curious.

  • derfelcadarn

The fact that they did NOT provide hearing protection is troubling. Very amateurish.
