E.R. Shaw Custom Rifles and Barrels

E.R. Shaw was another recommended stop for me at SHOT. If you haven’t heard of them, they are a family owned business that has been making barrels for over 100 years. Their barrels are used by “some of the biggest firearms manufacturers”, and they also custom build rifles.

They didn’t really have anything new this year, but they did have some of their custom built rifles on display (the newest thing they have is the Mark VII VS Custom). The ones that really caught my eye were the ones with their helical fluted barrels (which they are now in the process of trademarking).

They have a huge list of options that can be selected when building out a custom rifle (the Mark VII VS for example).

Do any of you have a custom built rifle from them? Thoughts? Kudos? Complaints?

How can you trademark helical fluted barrels? That sounds more like something that would be patented and there’s prior art for that. The Krieger barrels used by PGWTDI on their rifles have had it for years.

I’m pretty sure they’ve claimed a patent or other IP right to helical/spiral barrel fluting for some time now.

      Yes, the rep mentioned that.

I don’t own one, but my uncle does. He has a varmint barreled version with the helical fluting in .22-250 Rem (prairie dogs on the northern plains!). Shaw uses a Savage action with their barrel. The rifle is nicely finished and accurate. I personally don’t care for the look of the helical fluting, but it is certainly different.

That was my thought. Very distinctive.
