Swedish Marines Recruitment Ad

Swede ad

This is hilarious. The Swedish military is making fun of US recruitment ads. They point out common characteristics seen in US military commercials. Juxtaposed to a stereotypical military commercial is the reality. Oh and their strange futuristic weapon appears to be a HK G36.

Yeah, um, not funny. The Swedish military is the joke, not the U.S. Marines. Who’d want to volunteer to serve for a country that was neutral during WWII and allowed Nazis to transport equipment using Swedish railroads?

    • Llewelyn

This might be the dumbest comment I have ever seen on this website.
      1) You’re implying that the people who are in charge of Sweden now are the ones who were in charge then, almost 70 years ago.
      2) You’re being a jerk, they’re defending their country and not doing anything wrong, have some respect.

      • TB

Well, he still has a point. We here in Sweden like to think we’re morally superior to every one else with our “neutrality”, which in reality just means standing on the sidelines refusing to help when the good guys and the bad guys fight it out.

And as for “defending our country”, unfortunately that’s not true. In reality, our military defence has been totally abolished. All that remains is a few thousand people, enough to send a few hundred men to international missions, we’ve had some troops in Afghanistan, and are currently sending a small contingent to Mali. But we have long since lost the ability to defend our own country. The Russians could just walk in and take over any time they’d like.

        • joe schemo

That is the fate of any small country. You can fight but you will lose in the end.

          • TB

Yes, very true, and that’s why we need to join an alliance, like NATO, to have any chance of defending ourselves. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen anytime soon. The previous government was moving in that direction, but since the recent elections, we now have a leftist government here in Sweden, which have shut the door to a NATO membership. And with a new Cold War starting here in Europe, that’s NOT the policy that we should be adopting.

          • Jason Blankenship

Plus, your leftist government is allowing your nationhood to die off, thanks to letting Muslims come in and destroy your nation from the inside.

          • TB

Yes, but to be fair, this has been going on for years, so it’s not something that can be blamed on the new leftist government. And the problem isn’t the immigrants, it’s the heavily regulated labour market, with extremely strict job security and very high minimum wages. This makes it very difficult for people lacking work experience or having poor Swedish language skills to get a job. In addition to making it hard for immigrants to get a job and be assimilated into their new culture, it also causes high youth unemployment.

          • iksnilol

ooga booga, muslims ooooh. Blaming all the problems on a single group or entity is oversimplifying things.

          • swede1986

Agreed. The Eurabia schtick gets old. I’ve served with a bunch of immigrants, they’ve been good people.

          • iksnilol

Myself being an immigrant I know that f***ups are worse for me than “natives” because if I do something wrong then people are going to be “all people from X country are like that”. So you have that extra motivation to not mess up.

But there are also those who can’t get a job (either due to being stupid or because of discrimination) and then they become criminals and the like. Then again the same thing happens to natives too.

Hope this doesn’t break the no politics rule.

          • FrenchKiss

            Obviously you are a LIV

          • iksnilol

            LIV?

How did a mentally ill Nazi get on the TFB? And why do they allow him to continue hate mongering?

          • Taylor TX

Its the internet man, there isnt a door man prohibiting people who are intending to stir up shit. Censorship of his dumbass comments is one way, openly making him look like a dumbass is another.

          • Cymond

That’s a good question, especially considering that Michael Zupcak and I were scolded for “politics” 8 months ago because we discussed the NY SAFE act in a negative way.

How has TFB gone from that to this in 8 months?

          • FrenchKiss

How come he doesn’t live in his glorious Germany?

          • iksnilol

I don’t support nazis but how are you going to beat him up when you have “french” in your name?

          • FrenchKiss

My grandparents were in the resistance. Killed many krauts. And they enjoyed it.

          • iksnilol

Your grandparents, not you. Threathening people over the internet doesn’t make you a tough guy.

          • FrenchKiss

            You mean like Nazis do?

          • iksnilol

But so do you. You both are internet treatheners.

NOTE: Not defending the Nazi or the Frenchie.

          • FrenchKiss

            And you’re a pussy.

          • iksnilol

You are just proving me even more right. The butthurt is strong within you.

        • Wetcoaster

I have heard the joke that during the Cold War, Sweden was willing to fight the Soviets right down to the last Finn.

A self-deprecating joke from a Swede. Canadians tend to have a lot of self-deprecating jokes too. Probably endemic to militaries of ‘middle powers’ who know that their bosses tend to chronically over-promise and under-deliver.

        • FrenchKiss

The muslims are already walking in and taking over. Right?

        • percynjpn

You’re right – and I hope they do!

        • n0truscotsman

Sometimes its best to not do anything when it comes to regional wars. Stay out. Sweden’s decision to not involve itself in World War 2 was not base on some sort of hindsight about what the outcome could be, but rather circumstances at the time.

Neutrality is a moral superiority in my opinion.

At least you guys make good weapons and fighter jets. And your armed forces and country arent as fucked as you think they are. You could be like the Italians. or the greeks.

        • Yellow Devil

Interestingly enough, I was just reading a csmonitor article about Finland and their re-evaluation of official neutrality in the wake of any Russian transgression. Generally, if Russia doesn’t do anything else, than Finland says it will stay the course and not even consider NATO. This is based on their longstanding ties, long natural borders with Russia, historical losses in the Winter War (but didn’t mention the huge losses the Soviets experienced) and following the likes of Sweden. But anxiety has risen in recent years and if Russia does continue their incursions into Eastern Europe, than the sentiment in Finland and even Sweden may change.

      • FrenchKiss

        1) So? Their attitude hasn’t changed, you ignorant asshole.
        2) Defending what? Sweden is quickly becoming a muslim country. There’s no patriotism there. I know. I worked for the Swedish Air Force numbnuts.

      • FrenchKiss

The ones in charge today are worse than the ones in charge 70 years ago. Watch and learn.

    • joe schemo

      1. Had the japanese not attack pearl harbor America would certinly let the russians. Brits and chinese fight on without them.
      2. Sweden played it smart in ww2 had they fought they would have been defeated in 2 to 3 weeks just like norway. Lets not hold any illusion about that.

      • Barry

The US during WW2 already picked the allies side before they officially jumped in. They were a significant source of britain’s military resupplies and anticipated joining the allies by building up their military industry for war long before Pearl Harbor.
The American government at the time was ready to join the fight, but the citizens were weary of participating in another world war–until the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was only a matter of time before the US would be involved.
I wouldn’t sit there and say the US “certainly” would have stayed neutral because they didn’t even before the Pearl Harbor attack.

        • MattInTheCouv

Agreed. As further evidence: groups like the Flying Tigers. America was playing “just the tip” before she went balls deep into Hitler and Hirohito

Nope, trolls existed before the internet and they will after as well. They will always show up, catering to them is merely providing them with an undeserved victory. Its not like this mofo has actually posted anything but blatant shit talking.

        • Berg

Same could be said about Sweden. We helped Finland in their struggle against the Soviets with both equipment, food, shelter for civvies and (small amount) of soldiers. You can’t compare a country that’s sitting on it’s own island safe on the other side of the world to a country right in the middle of the fighting parties.

      • FrenchKiss

        1. Wrong
        2. So?

Butthurt of the year-award goes to you…

      Actually. It is funny.

      • FrenchKiss

What is “Butthurt of the year”? Seems to me to be a homosexual reference. Is that why you posted with that word? Are you a homosexual?

        • Dan

Why would you assume butt hurt is in anyway a homosexual reference? Why is that the first thing to pop in your mind? I mean come on if i fell on my but it would hurt. If someone kicked me in the but it would hurt so there are plenty of reasons why your but would hurt that don’t involve being homosexual. This could be insight into some deep concealed feelings and insecurities you harbor.

          • iksnilol

I agree with Dan and G0rdon.

Butthurt doesn’t imply homosexuality. If you are in the closet so to speak you will probably be better off by coming out. Hiding an essential part of yourself can only lead to pain later on.

If I were a Swedish young buck, I would join if it was written in the contract that I could keep the HK416 afterwards. (Or maybe the HK416 is for Norway?)

    • G0rdon_Fr33man

Got my trusty HK416 right here 🙂

The Swedes has the AK5, Norway has the 416…

You don´t get to keep it, but you can store it at home if you are active reserve.

The Swiss let you keep your Sig, so you seem mixed up a bit 😛

      • TB

Yes, and for the international audience, the AK5 is the Swedish version of the FN FNC carbine:

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_FNC

      • theswede

the reserve have the ak4, a 7.62×51 rifle, the only reason was so that the old timers could get cheap(for free) ammo for their hunting training 😛

  • Don Ward

“Let me see your war face!”

    “Bork! Bork! Bork! Bork!”

    • theswede

it is funny that with all of Swedens contribution to western culture.
we have Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman, two of the greatest moviestars ever
we have Ingmar Bergman one of the most influential directors ever.
a whole host of modern actors
Jussi Björling one of the biggest opera singer ever.
we have ABBA one of the biggest bands ever, hugely influential. Sweden is the third largest music exporter in the world.
we have several of the biggest athletes ever in several sports.
we have scientific discoveries up the wazoo, the whole classification system for animals and plants was a swedish idea, the correct way to measure temperature (celcius) was Swedish, most patents per capita of any country

but the first thing americans think about when they hear Sweden is a muppet? says more about America than Sweden I think… 😛

well atleast you dodn’t confuse us with the Swiss, uncanny how often that happens,

      • Don Ward

Uncanny how you neglect to mention Ace of Base. Hiding something, methinks?

        • Lee

Maybe he saw the sign? Or he just wants another baby and he’s gone tomorrow… BWAHAHAHAHA!

  • johb

Woah, making fun of the Americans? Hardly. Its basically just saying that this isnt like the movies but that they Swedish Military can offer the recruit something useful in terms of education and a chance to shoot guns and blow shit up.

  • In my opinion as a machine gun aficionado, assault rifle enthusiast, and a collector of these categories of firearms, I would argue that the Bofors AK5 is the finest military rifle in service today. Just throwing that out there.

    • William C1

What do you base this off of?

            no surprises there

      • Thousands upon thousands of rounds through FN FNCs (the AK5 is a licensed FNC). The AK5 does however have many, many improvements that make it leaps and bounds ahead of its Belgian counterpart.

        • Sulaco

You really need to deal with the racist hate mongers on your site.

          • This isn’t my site.

          • JW Collins

I’m a racist hate monger for wondering why he thinks this FNC clone is so great?

          • Well I delete and ban him every time he comes back under another name.

        • hagge

Improvements such as removing the last round bolt hold open feature for example heh. It is good for what it is but does not really compare to any modern design.

          • dave

I thought the AK5C has a bolt release paddle much like the AR15/M16 right above the mag well on the left side.

It’s basically an AR15/M16 from an ergonomics point of view with an AK bolt and long stroke piston carrier. A folding adjustable stock as well. A combination of what makes the Stoner and Kalashnikov designs great.

Basically the weapon’s only drawback is the weight. Otherwise the gun is on par with or better than many current military service rifles, hence why it’s still around.

        • exjaeger

can’t it just be that the grass is greener on the other side?

now my experience to compare with is not so extensive but when we met americans, germans etc in ex-yugoslavia and had friendly banter it always seemed that everybody wanted what the other had. except for the finns I’ve met back home they do love their rk62, nobody wanted what the brits offered

now in civilian life and IPSC shooting I have chosen a ar15 variant and am quite fond of it, much more so then my former service rifle

          • Y-man

You mean – “The BRASS is better on the other rifle”?

Sorry couldn’t help but throw that in!

    • hagge

Well, not really. Perhaps it was good when the military implemented it but today the AK5 is old and worn out. The Swedish military is looking to replace it “soon”, but unfortunately the Swedish military is an underfunded piece of shit atm. We have a saying in Sweden: We will fight until the Finnish military is gone, then give up. Still a funny commercial though.

      • All service rifles get old and worn out my friend. M16s, AKs, etc.
And I have always heard from my family that the Swedish military doctrine is “to fight until the last Finnish soldier”.
I assure you readers that my Swedish heritage has nothing to do with my bias towards their fine small arms 🙂

      • John Sjöström

LOL. There is no rush in replaceing the ak5. The Ak5 is still going and the ak4 (g3a3) that the homeguard is using is allmost impossible to wearout.

      • n0truscotsman

Old and worn out? you should have seen those M4s and M16s US troops went to war with when the GWOT began or OIF.

Or the SAWs that were deployed to Desert Storm.

    • Man pippy

That must mean the AK5C is even better. Have you got your hands on one of those Alex C?

    • swede1986

The AK5 was great when new, but it’s showing its age. It’s much too heavy for a 5.56 caliber carbine, and the C and D versions are even heavier. This becomes a problem when hanging M203s, optics, lasers etc on them.
I’ve been issued the AK5 for almost a decade.

      • John Sjöström

Heavy?! Go to the gym and train. The AK5 is heavy cuz its more realiable then most 5.56 weapons out there. And our defence forces need that in case of war where the logistics will go down.

        • swede1986

I’ve used the Ak4 with M203, so don’t start that bullshit. The Ak5 is an antiquated weapon, anyone who denies that is a moron.

          • John Sjöström

Is this a penis dick measuring contest who hade the biggest gun?You where the one that said it was heavy. Antique? Yeah cuz the m16 isnt.

          • swede1986

Yes, it is heavy for a 5.56 caliber carbine. The AK4 at least offers a more powerful round, but the AK5 has no excuse. Every extra kilo of weapon means that soldiers can carry less water, less ammo, less batteries, and so forth. Get it through your thick skull.

    • 6.5swede

We use the AK5C now; it is a modernized version of the AK5 and was built out of the best AK5 rifles we had left in our inventory. It has two major flaws and it is weight and high levels of ware.

The reason it wears out so quickly is that it was not originally designed to be a
shot rile. The weight is not that bad. It makes it very good recoil wise and it really isn’t as heavy as some people claim. The largest problem is that together with a GL it is very front heavy but that is because the GL itself weights more than it should.

It is an easy gun to learn and you don’t have to go all in when cleaning it. It handles the cold very well. And it is very easy to operate when using thick winter gloves which give it a huge advantage over most AR platforms.

We are looking for newer weapons to replace the AK5C and AK4 (G3A3 with an Aimpoint sigt) but the army want to wait to see if newer, better, ammunition will enter the market before buying new weapons. Right now they seem to be looking for a DMR system; they were not that pleased with the 5.56 NATO round in the sandbox in Afghanistan where ranges tend to be quite long.

  • USMC03Vet

And yet even this parody is better than the US Marines advertisement of rushing out of an AAV to delivers AIDS.

    :I

  • Grindstone50k

I like TFB. It reminds me of all the stuff I saw on the Internet 5 years ago already.

    • Dan

I like it too, it gives all the douchebags like you a place to whine about what they have already seen and assume everyone else has seen. And it’s a blog not a 24hr news channel with late breaking stories soo… go on and kick rocks.

      • Grindstone50k

Would you like some Preparation H to go with that butthurt?

    • Man pippy

TFB has come under new management around a year ago so it makes sense they would accidentaly blog about old stories. (Swedes probably reuse the ad too)

  • Rights are Non-Negotiable

What is hilarious is that the Swedes are running recruitment ads in English.

Sounds like among the things they can’t do is attract native Swedes willing to defend Sweden.

    • Der SS Allgemeine

more muslim baiting by the jew troll

    • TB

That’s because the pay is a joke. There was a story in the news a while ago, about how the cleaners at military facilities were making more money than the soldiers there. The low pay is making recruitment very difficult.

      • exjaeger

depending on how far back you mean it could be that the soldiers were still conscript soldiers they didn’t make alotta money but it was a conscript army it was not a job. soldiers/privates nowadays make ordinary money, , I googled the pay for an american private marine and it was listed at 1468dollars a swedish private makes about 2333dollars and pay is way more if they are deployed training or for real. like 3x the salary when they went to Afghanistan

        • TB

Yes, but that’s before the extremely high Swedish taxes. And the cost of living here is higher too. And there is no housing on the military bases here, unlike in the US. Basically, any low paying entry level job without any educational requirements will get you a much higher pay than enlisting as a soldier.

          • exjaeger

the high taxes does give you something thou.

and there are plenty of fulltime jobs that gives you way less than 2333dollars a month.

I have family that currently serve and they are quite happy with the salary, especially the compensation for training excercises, something like every hour past your regular time is worth 3 hours
not uncommon for soldiers to have earned twice the normal vacation time every year

And soldiers get paid to educate themselves, not true for any other government employee

    • iksnilol

Half the ad is in English. The parody part was in English because they were parodying… American millitary which speaks… English.

      • FrenchKiss

And running the ad on Swedish television where the people speak…Swedish.

        • TheSwede

everybody speaks English in Sweden, obligatory in school since ww2. you know when we switched from the German boat to the US one 😛

most of the shows on commercial TV are in English, only the public service channels are predominantly in Swedish

          • FrenchKiss

When I was there few people spoke English except in Stockholm and in the military (English is required for pilots). As for TV, it was all in Swedish. Only the late night porn from Norway TV was in English.

        • iksnilol

F*** it, I tried explaining. You see, in some countries we expect people to know multiple languages since that is curriculum in these countries. Shocker, I know.

    • Grindstone50k

English is actually fairly common among many Euro nations.

  • Pete Sheppard

Funny! Good for the Swedes to have tough, realistic training.

  • John

    Touche, Sweden. Touche.

Although the next time the Covenant launches a death fleet against Earth, we fully expect you to pick up your weapons and reinforce the war effort. All hands on deck when the planet is threatened. 🙂

  • Tyvärr!

    One word: Poltava.

This is the link to Swedish Armed Forces.

A better translation of “Marine” is Navy, Sweden doesn’t have a second army like the United States has with the USMC.

Heres a link for the Naval Commandos unit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kustj%C3%A4garna

  • Mako_Dragoon

Didn’t get sweet background music or voice over, but I did do a lot of cool stuff in the Corps… but I did not get an education that lead to a job where I could make a difference.
