Tom is a former Navy Corpsman that spent some time bumbling around the deserts of Iraq with a Marine Recon unit, kicking in tent flaps and harassing sheep. Prior to that he was a paramedic somewhere in DFW, also doing some Executive Protection work between shifts. Now that those exciting days are behind him, he has embraced his inner “Warrior Hippie” and assaults 14er in his sandals and beard, or engages in rucking adventure challenges while consuming craft beer. To fund these adventures, he writes medical software and builds websites and mobile apps. His latest venture is as one of the founders of IronSights.com; a search engine for all things gun related. He hopes that his posts will help you find solid gear that will survive whatever you can throw at it–he is known (in certain circles) for his curse…ahem, ability…to find the breaking point of anything.

Remington thunderbolt. They have been getting Remington buckets and Bricks of 525 in every week. I don’t know why anybody would pay $40 for a brick of 22’s. One online seller has 61 buckets of remington in stock. That’s over 90,000 rounds of 22’s. No shortage of them.

  • Sulaco

Hey what about 6.8 spc? 300BLK indeed!

  • Limonata

I will never understand why 380 costs so much compared to 9mm

    • Ge

Simple supply and demand I think…

    • The Truth of the Matter

      Economy of manufacture + popularity

    • iksnilol

Supply and demand. Same reason why 5.56 and 7.62×39 rifles are cheaper than 9×19 rifles.

      • Zachary marrs

Perhaps where you are, over here prices for 9×19 carbines range from 200-900

        • iksnilol

ARs and AKs can be had for 400-600, while MP5s and 9mm ARs are way more expensive.

          • Zachary marrs

Then you have hi points and s2k’s which can be had 200-500

          • iksnilol

Hi-point = good but small mag cap.

S2K = good luck finding one.

  • Zachary marrs

    How about .22mag?

  • Chase Buchanan

Why are we replacing .300 Blackout again?

    • Zachary marrs

Well, its kinda the .40 s&w of rifle calibers.

For what it was designed for (better performance in sbr’s), 90% of shooters will not use it to its full capacity. The only way the .300 blk will get a spot next to 5.56 and 7.62×39 is if some police agency adopts it.

      • Chase Buchanan

        Makes sense.

      • DonDrapersAcidTrip

what can 5.56 do that 300 blackout can’t, what reason is there to use it over either 300 or 7.62 other than it’s cheaper right now

        • Zachary marrs

Its still the .40 s&w of rifle calibers, with less users and more fanboys

Hasn’t been adopted by a single police force, unlike the .40
          Has no military surplus
Only 4 different systems chambered in it, the Remington m7, that aac single shot, the ar15, and some home ak builds.
The .300 blackout is still a reloaders cartridge
For the average shooter, how would they justify the increase of price for nothing in return?
5.56 is cheap, the .300 blk is not

          • DonDrapersAcidTrip

all of that has to do with availability and price, nothing to do with how it actually performs. I want to know whether it’s the better round or not, not which one has more fans

also why replace it? and with something presumably even more obscure? no one is adopting this fast enough, let’s come out with something even more newer and unfamiliar?

          • Zachary marrs

Did you really just say .22 mag is more obscure than .300 blk? Lol

          • DonDrapersAcidTrip

I didn’t actually say that anywhere. I didn’t even know we were talking about .22 mag, because when you try to ask questions you just get dick head responses apparently. Thanks for still not answering anything I actually asked and just repeatedly telling me about how long ammo has been around or available for as if I care.

          • Zachary marrs

You should have read my other comments. I have alread given you the answers you want, you seem to not realize that lack of availability and price can kill ANY caliber.

          • DonDrapersAcidTrip

I’ve never heard of availability and price affecting how a bullet PERFORMS which is actually what I’m trying to get information on. Hard to be a fanboy when I can’t even get information on the damn thing in the first place. Just forget it, stop talking to me please.

          • Zachary marrs

If this was the case we should put .50 bmg up there.
.300 blk looked real good back when iwi, bushmaster, and fn were promising .300 blk conversion kits for their non ar rifles, and if they did, the .300 blk would be more popular.

Just because you have a 7.62×39 equivalent in an ar doesn’t mean you have the ultimate ballistic solution.

By your logic, we should also have the .280 British up there since it was a totally awesome kewl new round

          • DonDrapersAcidTrip

Because that’s an utterly idiotic reason to decide whether or not to use a round? How about maybe how it actually performs? Why is that so difficult to understand? Let’s not use it because it’s not popular? Let’s not think too hard about how idiotically circular that logic is either?

          • Zachary marrs

Well, tough shit, im sorry these reasons dont satisfy you, but thats life.

I like your logic, lets put up the .280 British since its so superior to the .308

          • DonDrapersAcidTrip

“Well, tough shit, im sorry these reasons dont satisfy you, but thats life.”

lmao uh… okay? Literally what the fuck does any of the dumb shit you’ve typed here have anything to do with a single thing I asked

I hear 9mm is pretty popular let’s replace every bullet on planet earth with 9mm rounds. Let’s rechamber every firearm for 9mm. We know to use it because people use it and that’s life. That’s the way she goes. A bird in the bush is worth a man in the sand. Clear moon frost soon. etc.

          • Zachary marrs

9mm is already up there fool

          • USAFTP

LMAO! You’re on point and killing me at the same time! Too funny buddy.

      • I dont know that not having a police force or Armed forces adopt it is reason enough to “replace” it (I’m late to the conversation forgive me I dont know what we are meant to be replacing it with.)

As a hunting round in even the standard .223 range its got more knockdown, momentum is everything at distance and at short range it has the power to match 223/5.56.

For us hunting is a different situation to the US where you guys ticket everything. We have a large amount of feral animals that need regular hunting and also our game animals are on the increase although for deer both 223 and 300BO are not legal for hunting deer with being judged not powerful enough to guarantee a clean kill.

We also dont have semi auto and ammunition is very expensive here both loaded and components but it is much cheaper to reload as a regular shooter. Most regular shooters have some involvement in it.

I am about to start furnishing bolt on 300BO kits to users of Remington 7615 pump platform as a highly accurised and developed round lie the 223 that should be able to single hole at 100 is wasted in a 12″ spread -freehand shooting platform like a pump rifle. I am also providing a switch barrel version for the 7600 version 308 as a 375-08 as once again we dont need long distance with our shooting nor will the level of accuracy off a standing freehand shoot associated with pump usage help out except when you are stranded and run out of your especially loaded ammo. The 375-08 and the 300BO are having lighter than regular bullets developed locally to bring them up to higher speeds to help with the distance and power issues of keeping a bullet above say a magics figure of 1600fps to be an effective hunter.

Now getting back to why the 300BO doesnt need to be replaced, we say have a user base for 223 of 50% of all shooters or 350k. If we have a total turnover to 300BO within the next 2 years at 35K users thats substantially more than any police force and almost 2/3rds the size of our land based warfare forces. Nobody could ignore that figure.

As mainly reloaders we are gearing up massively t make everyone who buys a 300BO and independent supplier of their own ammo by giving them either the means to produce their own brass or making a home spun supply of brass, certainly we have several Australian bullet factories to make projectiles to hunting specifications (supersonic, hollowpoint ) and the amount of people we have using it already and that steady growth rate on the back of local manufacturers secures the blood-lines of the 300BO as a hunting round in Australia. 🙂

What was nominated as a replacement? Out of curiosity.

        • Zachary marrs

          As a replacement, id like .357 mag/ .38 spl, or .22 magnum

    • Doc Rader

LOL. This thread got polarized pretty quickly. So I am replacing it because it is not generating enough data to show meaningful information. With maybe only 4 to 5 data points per week it just doesn’t currently have the market penetration to show trending.

I’m not going to replace it with anything equally as obscure or niche. At this point, the most votes have been for 357/.38 and 30-06. Though, hilariously, I’ve had an equal number of votes to keep it.

      Which means you people don’t vote… 🙂

  • baldeagle91

Does it have to be a rifle caliber? What about 9×18 makarov?

  • Nick

I’d like to see 30-06 added to the list.

  • SpeediFl

220 -110 grain. No other ammo can do that without lugging around AR10s.
I hunt hog with the 110 and plink with 157&150.
I have no use for the 220 personally but I know guys who use it over 9mm in quite shooting.
If you try and shoot hog with a 556 there’s a good chance you will have to chase them around for hours and try to keep 762×39 quite. .
It’s greedy distribution tactics keeping it out of the mainstream. Should be same $$ as 556-762.
The sellers are only hurting themselves long term as their prices force buyers out of the market.

  • fandangoforever

You should add .45LC for the cowboy shooters.
