CMMG Mk4 Varmint Rifles

CMMG AR-15

CMMG announced a pair of new varmint rifles called the Mk4 V and Mk4 V2.  Both rifles are chambered in 5.56 NATO and are based on the AR-15 platform.

Both the Mk4 V and the Mk4 V2 have 24″ fluted barrels made of 416 stainless steel.  A KeyMod handguard is standard on these rifles.  The KeyMod handguard allows a shooter to add pieces of rail or accessories directly, while keeping the size and weight to a minimum.  The upper receiver has a Picatinnny rail for mounting an optic.

The less expensive Mk4 V comes with a CMMG single-stage trigger.  The Mk4 V2 comes with a Geissele Automatics SSA two-stage trigger.

The Mk4 V has a standard A2-type pistol grip and A1-type buttstock.  The V2 uses Magpul MOE parts instead.  MSRP for the Mk4 V is $1,249.95 while the Mk4 V2 comes in at $1,499.95.

Except for price it looks sweet.

That is one long ass barrel

It comes with a 30-round magazine? Good grief, look at the shooter and the magazine in the photo. Whatever the capacity (10 rounds?), it makes a lot more sense for the intended purpose.

Some prairie dog towns have dozens of critters popping up like a “wack-a-mole” game. Having a 30-round magazine allows more shooting and less loading.

Who wants a varmint rifle with a 5.56 chamber and a 1/8 twist? I’ll take .223 wylde and 1/9 for shooting sage rats.

  • PickAName

I don’t know why these AR-15 pattern varmint rifles have such long barrels on them. The 5.56/.223 round has rapidly diminishing velocity and accuracy returns on barrels longer than 20″, so really all you are getting is a tiny bit more accuracy for a barrel that is more unwieldy and “whippy”.

*tiny bit more velocity, not accuracy
