Leave it to a few Marines to figure out a solution to a problem. Now, the solution may not be what you were expecting, but it typically gets the job done. Said solutions are rarely aesthetically pleasing, but full of bravado and a bit of gusto.

Devil Dog Concepts has released their first product, the “Hard Charger” side charging handle for AR-style weapon systems. Unlike the GFG Side Charging Handle, the Hard Charger supports the charging handle with a rail mount and guide assembly.

Interesting. You would still have to move your face away from the gun, so I do not see the advantage.

  • Timothy G. Yan

For $220, wouldn’t just easier to just change out the upper receiver with a side charging upper and a bolt carrier with charging handle? Although the charging handle has to be on the right side for that.

    • Cornelius Carroll

The problem with most side chargers is that they open the upper receiver to more debris from the outside.

      • John

Where are you shooting with so much debri??? I use the NRA HQ range in Fairfax, VA.

It’s cleaner than a surgical room and I would eat off the floor there.

  • hydepark

No way I’d give up that much rail-estate especially in that location and especially for this purpose. I’ll stick with my BCM Gunfighter (or two) and laugh quietly at anyone next to me on the range with one of these things. Interesting idea, though.

  • 1leggeddog

I guess the reasoning behind this is to further minimize the amount of movement you do to the gun to use the charging handle.

We’d need a video to confirm thou.

    • Ben

And to simultaneously use the charging handle and bolt hold open with one hand for clearing malfunctions.

      • Joshua

A bad lever is only $20

  • ValleyForge77

Hmmm it’s an interesting idea. But to me, the added weight, loss of rail space and addition of another mechanism don’t outweigh any perceivable gain from this. I’ll stick with the Raptor. Gives me full ambi charging capabilities and is strong as an ox

  • doc_way

Solution to a problem which does not exist. You still run into all the same problems with the regular charging handle; mainly the length of the handle as it is extended. I see no benefit to this.

    • gunslinger

      this?

  • TITAN308

    $220… smoking crack.

  • Michael R. Zupcak

lol: “Eliminates operator errors and stress on roll pin.” How, exactly, does it eliminate operator errors?

    • vonzeitgeist

I would assume they claim it reduces operator error by changing from an awkward central charging handle to a larger, easier to find side lever. Interesting idea, and I like the way people think outside the box for these things, but I think I might just switch to a more modern SIG, Beretta, FN etc if the AR system annoyed me that much.

  • Joshua

Try using that with a sling and quickly transition to your sidearm while wearing a PC and see what happens.

Big large knobby charging handles suck.

  • Ed

    NOT worth it stay traditional!

  • guest

Yet another useless add-on for an outdated platform.

  • valorius

    Stupid.

  • Beaumont

    No…just no.

While ergonomically the AR-15 charging handle leaves a bit to be desired, when not in use it’s quite out of the way.

This modification sacrifices that positive aspect completely.

    • dan citizen

      agreed 100%

  • Brett

    I’d try it.

  • Yellow Devil

I think it’s still in the “concept” phase.

  • Maxcoseti

Oh, I didn’t know Rube Goldberg was making AR accesories, cool!
