Ammo Prices: 06/27/2014

ammo

Week 14!

In case you missed it last week, we published the rollup summary for the last 13 weeks of data. You can review it at: http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2014/06/20/ammo-prices-summary-03282014-06202104

As many of us have noted, ammo prices are pretty stable overall. .22LR is still overpriced. .380 ACP is actually trending down. And most dealers are pretty close in price to one another for a given caliber and lot size. There are some vendors that have generally lower prices and some that have generally higher prices (but our data does not account for relative quality, nor for shipping). Despite a number of events involving the inappropriate use of firearms, people are not running out and stockpiling (at least not to the point that we are seeing any supply/demand issues)–and that even includes recent statements by elected officials rattling the “gun control” saber again.

If you enjoy shooting as I would surmise many of us here do, buy ammo when it is cheap and plentiful. Not just when there is fear of low supply. And with all that extra ammo you are buying, take a family member (or friend) out to the range and help pass on good skills and stewardship related to that part of our national heritage.

We do appreciate the support and constructive comments and will continue this article series as long as it is productive.

As always, if you have comment or witticisms, please leave them below. And if you find that some of the items are now out of stock or the prices have significantly changed, please let the other readers know. Also, if you know of any vendors that are not represented here and you have had a good experience with, comment below and we will see about adding them.

We have included the raw data so you can run your own trends: Weekly Ammo – 2014-06-27

Tom is a former Navy Corpsman that spent some time bumbling around the deserts of Iraq with a Marine Recon unit, kicking in tent flaps and harassing sheep. Prior to that he was a paramedic somewhere in DFW, also doing some Executive Protection work between shifts. Now that those exciting days are behind him, he has embraced his inner “Warrior Hippie” and assaults 14er in his sandals and beard, or engages in rucking adventure challenges while consuming craft beer. To fund these adventures, he writes medical software and builds websites and mobile apps. His latest venture is as one of the founders of IronSights.com; a search engine for all things gun related. He hopes that his posts will help you find solid gear that will survive whatever you can throw at it–he is known (in certain circles) for his curse…ahem, ability…to find the breaking point of anything.

While I appreciate the idea of trending ammo prices, comparing prices between vendors is pointless without including shipping costs, or at least ammo brand. Not poo-pooing on the article, just offering a suggestion. Have you considered creating “tiers” of ammo mfgs? Tier 1 could be match and PD ammo. Tier 2 would be Federal, Lake, Fiocci, etc. While Tier 3 would be Russian bulk and steel case. I realize the tiers are subjective but I think they would offer a better comparison of prices between vendors.

    • Doc Rader

I would disagree with “pointless”. The problem with including shipping is that it is highly variable based on the weight of what you are purchasing and who the company uses for shipping. Someone that lives in Dallas and orders from Cheaper Than Dirt is going to pay far less than someone that lives in Alaska for the same product.

So, basically we would need to create an application that takes your zip code and estimates shipping. But a couple of the ammo search engines already do this. And this is not meant to be a replacement for them. What it does is create a snapshot of data, that does actually show some useful trending. Trying to capture every possible variable would be an impossible task, and we would quickly approach diminishing returns. Casing type is something I’m considering adding if I can find an efficient way to harvest the information. And even then it would increase the amount of displayed information as we would need to create a Cartesian product of the data.

A better correction would be to eliminate (or otherwise delineate) vendors that offer free shipping as that skews the prices in the other direction.

      • gunslinger

while that may be the case, some places do offere flat rate shipping, others do not. I’d like to see an indicaton if shipping can be included.

        • Doc Rader

What I would be willing to do is to flag if the price offers free shipping (and indicate with some sort of icon in the data table). Sometimes vendors offer deals on shipping as a promotion, and is not a usual factor of purchase.

This won’t actually change any of the calculations other than give an indication of whether or not it should be the price as shown.

          • gunslinger

i think that’s a good compromise. because it’d be hard to tell what the actual cost is. some places have flate rate for all ammo. some it changes. some it depends on your location.

so that’s way to complicated to get into a data breakdown of everything.

but if i know the cheapest is 14/rd and doesn’t have free shipping, i can compare it to the 16/rd with free shipping. maybe see what can be grouped together and such.

I am tired of these articles I KNOW for a fact there is a supply shortage meaning GUN SHOPS and yes even Walmart are not getting inventories at a regular basis, if at all!

Not only is ammo hard to come by even with limits on how many you can buy or in Walmart, Dick’s, Gander Mountain, etc. with the need of a C.C.W. to even purchase ammo; BUT reloading components are hard to come by! Even manufactures like Georgia Arms post messages of them being behind on their orders due to a COMPONENTS SHORTAGE!

Let’s face it just like the illegals at the border, Fast and Furious, and the invasion of ISIS in Iraq, the ammo shortage is co-ordinated with the government! the administration gets what it wants an ammo shortage even to the point of burning or getting rid of surplus ammo, selling ammo to rebels, and even supplying every DHS and government agencies with ammo in a planned shell game of hiding actual ammo purchases! The ammo companies love it because there is an artificial shortage due to defense contracts and purchases which they love to fill the orders on! The gun magazines will publish bogus numbers because their advertisers will be upset if they reported the truth, and people buy the propaganda and anyone who thinks outside the box is a conspiracy theorist!

Question, why is it that shotgun shells were never hard to get during the shortage, or overpriced? If I was hoarding that’s what I would stock pile on for 2 reasons they are the most versatile round in what they can harvest and MOST people do not reload them!

How come there was not a magazine shortage?
