Ammo Prices: 5/02/2014

Sixth week!

So, I’m not sure why but The Sportsman Guide has 500rds of .380 ACP for less than half of the other vendors with availability. It *is* Wolf, but still…

Also, there are a lot more vendors selling .22LR this week. Prices are still a bit “gougy”, but there are some at $0.13/rd (or less; which I realize is still hideous).

This week I added background coloring to the lowest (and highest) price per round (PPR) in a category. I’m calculating on the raw number with a higher precision (rather than a currency conversion), so you may see items with a PPR a penny apart. If in doubt just look at the overall price…

As always, if you have comment or witticisms, please leave them below. And if you find that some of the items are now out of stock or the prices have significantly changed, please let the other readers know. Also, if you know of any vendors that are not represented here and you have had a good experience with, comment below and we will see about adding them.

We have also included the raw data so you can run your own trends: Weekly Ammo – 20140502

    thanks for the update!

  • NotoriousAPP

Thanks for keeping this up. When do you think you’ll add the graphs?

    • Doc Rader

A couple of weeks ago, we had a huge amount of community posting (using the raw data we are providing). I had asked for what people thought would be a couple of useful graphs as a standing feature, but never got any feedback, so I’m holding on it for now. What we may do is a quarterly summary version of this post that has trends over a larger period of time.

As of now we have added a per vendor per caliber change indicator (so you can see when a vendor’s lowest price is changing), and overall best (and worst) in price.

  • Jim

I think the most valuable thing would be a “best value” choice each month. Just let us know where to go if we want to get some 9mm now, or whatever. I also would like some numbers on lower volumes of ammo.

    • Doc Rader

Hi Jim, if you look at the tables you should see a light green background on items that are cheapest in that lot size for the caliber.

We will probably not do lower lot sizes (at least for a while)–it does take a bit of time to compile what we are already showing (and we are aiming for online retailers in amounts that you can’t easily get from your local dealers).

  • Ryan

I’m not sure how I feel about buying from “The Sportsman Guide” did anyone else notice the description next to that 500rds of .380? ‘500 rds. of Wolf® .380 ACP 91 Grain FMJ Ammo. Rip up the range with 2,822 F.P.S. velocity!’
What are they firing these from a rail gun? In my experience a 91grain .380 should have a MV of closer to 1000fp. I thought that maybe it was just a type-o but it said the same thing under ‘Features’ and it listed the Muzzle energy: 1,609 ft.-lbs!!! I mean this would be the specs on a really small 308 round not a .380.

    • Doc Rader

Yeah, I saw that too. Which is why I commented on the singularity of it. But the price doesn’t make sense for .308 either…

      • Ryan

That and 91gr bullet weight is way too light for 308. Pretty sure they are usually 150-180gr

      • Alliance Ammunition

Doc I think you misunderstood our email earlier. The 500 is a 550 not a 500 now and should have went to this link
        http://www.allianceammo.com/products/federal-champion-ammunition-22lr-36gr-hollow-point-550ct-bulk-box
Thank you for rectification of this. Working and taking care of business. We have been working 18 hour days to ship our orders. It’s been nuts around here for sure. Take care!
        Best Regards,
        Brian – AA

  • JohnnyBGood

the 300BLK section is depressing, glad I sold that gun after all

    • JumpIf NotZero

It’s for reloaders only right now. Better than 6.8 and 6.5 though.

    • Doc Rader

Yeah, that is an expensive platform to shoot (just like small lots of .380 ACP for some reason). I’d love to shoot one sometime and see what the whole “hub-bub” is…

      • Steve Truffer

Hubub is AK power in an AR with only a barrel change. American threading, too, so its easy to suppress subsonic ammo.

      • Alliance Ammunition

Please contact me Doc Rader – we make an LE caliber for use in that along with a match round. Think of it as being today’s ’30-30′ and if used in wartime, would be similar to an M1 carbine for today. The exception is that its design by the Freedom Group (AAC, Barnes and Remington) through Remington Defense will allow special units to have a single platform that doesn’t over penetrate and has a variety of ordinances to choose from starting at 110gr up to 220gr for subsonic use. This allows the same ballistic energy (actually greater) of 7.62×39 but in an M4 with the same capacity and single logistics instead of our clients carrying an HK MP5/UMP series then an M4 to do what a single M4 can do anyway – but now with better accuracy, ballistic coefficient, energy potential and penetration than any 9mm or 7.62×39 and with similar hardware that one is already used to and better, from a 9″ SBR upper. Sure 6.8 is great but you don’t see Federal producing it like they do now with 300BLK and people act like its not out there. It’s everywhere and while some may reload it – its far from a reloading round as one wrote above. Even Nikon makes their economical but practical P series of scopes with the 300BLK. Ammo is out there and many companies like ours produce it – some with special characteristics like our does but at LE or PMC security request. It’s a blast with an NFA lower and is much more controllable. I like how I can go from one to the other with just a quick swap of an upper as well.
People look at me crazy sometimes just going through these but I have to test them somehow. Why not with what SWAT teams are moving to (not all but more than you think)? Most real engagements happen in 100-200 yards not the 6.5/6.8 scenarios described above unless you are in the desert and with a clean shot. Everyone talks about getting that ‘perfect shot’ which is great – but I think you and I can agree that when you are taking fire; it doesn’t matter what it is except that it be accurate and take them down preferably delivering all its energy to them and not wasted as it passes through. The Freedom Group has done that enough to convince their competitor at ATK (American Eagle to produce it, then that says a lot). Our PMC that is a global organizations based out of Fort Bragg uses these exclusively with cartridges like the 357 SIG. They want you down and preferably in the first shot without sacrifice of cover nor capacity. If you want some, we produce it – just ask sometime! – Brian – AA

        • I had the opportunity to shoot an AAC suppressed with a 9 inch barrel chambered in 300 BlkOut. It was easy to control but still hits with a 30 caliber round. I’d have to reload because of cost but I may just convert one of my AR’s to the 300. After all all you need is the barrel.

  • BattleshipGrey

So a couple weeks ago I posted that I had finally decided to drop the $40 for a 500 round .22lr brick until I saw the weekly ammo prices at the time with a lowest price of $60. Today I went to Scheels not expecting to find any deals. I heard one of the sales guys say something about .22 to another customer. I lightly asked if they had any (expecting the answer I usually get). He said, yeah, right over here. $40 for 500! Only one per customer but I wasn’t going to argue.

  • Limonata

Thanks for adding the Green and Red box selections. Makes it easier to find who is the lowest and highest at that point of time

  • Mrninjatoes

Thank you Tom. I look forward to this post every week.

  • Chris

    What about Brownells?

  • Johnobody

Very enlightening disparity in prices. One has to wonder how much each of the vendors would charge for shipping on the aforementioned quantities. I know this is a lot of research, but it may level what seems like an irregular playing field. It does seem to be the day of the reloader.

Some friends & I have purchased a high quality progressive press and have agreed on loads for the calibers we all use. As a result, we save a bundle. When we invest in .300 uppers or build rifles in that caliber, we’ll work out the loads and, since we all served together, we can get a round that works for everyone without changing the whole press’ configuration for one guy’s special load. (that’s what single stage presses are for)

  • T F

Just checked Sportsmansguide. And, as they have been posting for a long time now, prices, and ‘notify me’ – meaning they do not have the ammo in stock to sell.

  • SemperFiMac

What a great service you provide. Thanks so much for your research. My only suggestion, if you have time, is to note if the ammo is steel case. Semper Fi.
