NRA 2014: The Beautiful Guns of Turnbull Manufacturing

Walking down the aisles, many of the booths all look alike. Each with their tired yet simultaneously happy Marketing staff, you can almost tune each out. Its more of the same… until something special catches your eyes.

Turnbull Manufacturing is one such company. Dedicated to the restoration of antique firearms, Turnbull has been bringing the art and history of firearms together since their founding. Showcased at NRA 2014 was a special 1911 that one of their engravers had spent more than 200 hours handcrafting.

Don’t gawk at the old guns too long. They also manufacture new high-quality 1911s from the plain-jane to the bespoke.

I never knew I wanted a case hardened AR until now…

They apparently weigh a ton (carbon steel vs. aluminum alloy), but they’re beautiful.

And wait for them to be adapted to a wooden stock ARES SCR lower… 😉

      • They certainly are that. I can’t think of many guns that wouldn’t be improved in the looks department with some case hardening. Polymer guns excluded of course.

Oh I’m sure it’s more than heavy enough to negate the design principles of the AR platform. But just look at that!

Also while thinking about it, I’d love to see a case hardened receiver M240… It’d look so delightfully retro with those slab sides and rivets.

I’ve visited their shop several times with a buddy that liked to have old shotguns refurbished. Each visit was a visual feast. Turnbull makes a mean calendar, too. It’s honestly the only calendar I’ve ever been proud to own!

Turnbull does a lot of the case color work on factory guns as well. I know they contract out to S&W, probably others as well.

I’m sure these are great and all, but I just can’t get into the case hardened look. Especially on the ARs.
