TFB Site Problems. Fixed?

tfb

Over the past couple of weeks we have had significant problems serving up the TFB homepage. Many readers have reported that they had not seen any new blog posts for 1 or even 2 weeks, and wanted to know if we were still operating. If anything, thanks to Nathan’s coverage of the NRA ’14 meeting, we have had far more blog posts in the past week than normal.

The sysadmin and myself have been trying to resolve this problem. TFB is a high traffic website so we have a number of page caching layers to ensure traffic spikes don’t take the server down. One of these layers messed up and reported to some web browsers that there were no changes since they last visited, so the browsers did not bother updating the page unless explicitly refreshed by the user.

We hope this is sorted now. Unfortunately anyone who is still having this problem is not going to see this blog post …

If you have been having this problem, and it is now fixed, please let me know how long this has been happening in the comments below. If you are still experiencing this on one device/browser also let us know (first do a page refresh).

UPDATE: If you are still having problems, click here and see if the homepage update.

I have had the problem only for the last four or five days. It seems to have resolved today. Thanks for all you do!

  • hkryan

For the last week I’ve had to manually refresh the main page to get new posts to show. Chrome browser.

  • BuckShank

http://www.webpagetest.org Good place to see whats slowing down. Large file for first load. After that its cached on most browsers. Your images seem to be taking the longest. People are probably mistaking the long load time for the jerky load and stuff.

  • Harrison Jones

Still not fixed for me. Last post I see is the Bruce Willis Die Hard article and says it was posted 3 hours ago. I found this article thorough the achieves.

  • WonderJay

Still a problem, even when manually refreshed. Last article on home page is the PX4 article.

  • Black_Viper

I use netvibes which has RSS readers. I get all updates (i think)… Sorry about the site, I know how finicky websites can be, 6 yrs in IT out of school.

  • Sadler

I thought it was just me since I switched OS’s on my computer. I had to clear my cookies for this site every time I wanted to refresh it, otherwise I’d see a two day old post that was posted “1 hour ago.” It seems to be fixed now, at least for me.

  • Giolli Joker

Here too I was thinking to be the only one affected (I could see new posts on my Kindle but only randomly from my laptop).
Now I’m on the laptop and I read this easily… I’d say: Good Job!
    Thank you TFB!

  • Blastattack

Problem is fixed for me now, thank you!

Can’t say when it first started. Certainly within the last two weeks. The main main page would not update regardless of navigation within this site. I never tried re-entering the site as it has permanent residence in one of my tabs. As mentioned before, the page would only update when I manually refreshed the page. No amount of clicking the TFB logo would force an update as it normally does.

EDIT: It was happening to me since April 19th. I distinctly remember not being able to go beyond Bruce Willis and the Knob Creek machine guns.

  • mitch

Sadly, the standard Android browser I use is still showing the Die Hard weekend post as the most recent. Going to the menu to see new reviews, news, ect., I can see the new posts. Know I’m missing a lot though. I miss this site… Please come back!

Mitch one thing you can do is check out Facebook page. The most recent post are on there. I was able to use the link from Facebook to go directly to the articles. It’s a bit of a pain but that’s one way to do it.

  • Andrew

Stopped at the Die Hard post for me. Says it was just posted a couple hours ago, and all the other articles say 24 hours or less. Have to manually refresh to see anything more recent than Bruce Willy.

    • Manimal

Same here. Though If I clicked refresh several times it would bring up new posts.

    • http://www.thefirearmblog.com/ Phil W “Senior Writer TFB”

Yea I’ve heard that a lot. That seems to be the norm for those having problems before.

    • ATman

I had that problem then I deleted the cache on my browser and the problem was fixed.

    • John Botts

Easy fix if you are running Windows is to force a refresh by using Ctrl + F5.
      On a Mac it’s Apple + R or Command + R.

  • wetcorps

Yup, had the problem for around two weeks. I figured there was a problem by clicking on “news”, which gave me access to more recent posts. I then figured I just could follows the archive page for the current month to see all of them. No amount of refreshing the homepage would fix it, but it seems to be the case now. Thanks!

  • Pete Sheppard

I was seeing posts on Facebook even though the web page was frozen; even that’s running again. Thanks; it had to be maddening for staff & admin!

  • Baron Elfindale

Still not working has been this way for about 2 weeks

    • Steve (TFB Editor)

What web browser are you using?

  • TheQuickestBrownFox

Using: Google Chrome/Version 34.0.1847.116 m Tested across multiple computers.

It happened from the Die Hard post for me (Was stuck at “post 1 minute ago”), until I decided to investigate a couple of days ago. Unfortunately I can’t tell you exactly what it was I did that fixed it, as I tried multiple fixes at once (Cleared cookies/local cache and went to the root URL instead of the /blog address my browser was linking me to from the home page) but that eventually fixed it. It was still buggy though and required me refreshing by going to the root URL again to update the posts.

There’s always been ‘something’ wrong with the site’s code as far as I’m concerned – it takes an age to load even on a very fast gaming/CAD/CFD computer I have, and quite frequently crashes Chrome. (Even before your previous database error issues this was the case).

My solution to that has been interrupting downloading after I can see the first few articles, however it’s still quite a pain and not always effective. (The page loads just fine visually, but takes forever to complete what I presume is back end stuff being fetched from your database/advertisers to supply other content)

I’m using a UK ISP, but the problem persists even when I’ve connected through a US based VPS. Under either I’ve had no problem loading content elsewhere.

  • OptimusDerf

At least a week and a half, but it looks like it’s working now.

  • Madcap_Magician

Still have the problem, last post is the Part 3 of the Home FFL thing. Using Chrome. Clearing the cache doesn’t seem to help, but clicking on “News” reloads it.

  • joethefatman

I had been having that problem and was doing the refresh bit. But I thought it was related to the Heartbleed fix, SSL cert replacement, that so many sites were doing.

  • allannon

I have been having the same problem, but refreshing the page seems to update in Chrome on Android. It’s been working since I factory reset my tablet (for another reason; TFB working again was just icing). Might that suggest some issue with cookies?

I’m not sure what caches you’re using, but perhaps manually refreshing the cache would at least help get this article up for those who are still having issues.

FWIW, I mostly read TFB in Chrome on Android from Suddenlink in SE Texas.

  • CrazyKg

I deleted my cache and then immediately had access to everything.Too bad I didn’t do it earlier.

  • echelon

I had to clear my cache every time to get it to update with Firefox. IE seemed to work fine most of the time but it got stuck occasionally. I didn’t seem to have the problem until last week. Seems to be fixed now.

  • gunslinger

every now and then i had problems a few weeks ago. but going in and retyping the address or clicking the refresh button would then load new articles.

using chrome on win7. or chrome on android.

  • Eric

I had the same problem and the only way I was able to view new posts was to open the page in a private browser, which removes all cached data when it is closed. Unfortunately this meant that I had to close the browser, reopen it, and then load the page again in order to see new posts. But it worked.

  • J.T.

It has been happening about a week for me. Looks to be fixed now though. I had to clear out my browser cache in order to get new posts to load up until today.

  • ibrokehteinternets

I’ve been having issues for a at least a week. Using Chrome. IE works a little better, but not very well. The home page never updates, but I can go to individual sections and see new posts. It is still not fixed as far as I can tell.

  • An Interested Person

I have had this problem, mostly on my android phone using google chrome. Firefox on my computer has been intermittently up to date. Sometimes it needs a refresh. A refresh fixed it every time.

  • Michael R. Zupcak

I wondered why I had to keep deleting my cookies to see new posts. Oh well, I have to do that anyway. Too much porn!

  • Tom M.

I can only see new posts if I go to the archives for the current month. The home page is still not updating for me and has not been for a couple weeks now.

  • tom – uk

Still has the problem of the most recent post being the knob creek shoot. Android on samsung s4

  • Renegade

Still not working on my end. The newest article I see is “Nemo Omen 300 WinMag AR Video”. This happens on my laptop only. My phone hasn’t had any issues with the home page.

  • ColaBox

Fixed, nice job guys. Stopped at Die Hard for me…then the Battle Axe post.

  • Jones

Last was the ak rivet post. Tried it on a laptop and viola.weird.

  • DZ

    Still happening to me

  • DiverEngrSL17K

I guess I’ve been lucky enough not to have experienced the issues you mentioned ( I use Mozilla Firefox and it has worked extremely well for me — not an advertisement for them, just the plain simple truth as it applies to my needs ). Either way, I certainly appreciate all the hard work and time-consuming effort that the TFB team puts into keeping this blog going — thank you and wishing you all the best in your endeavours!

  • seans

My phone has been able to access it no problem, but still having the problem on my labtop. Refreshing does work though.

  • Doopington

For the past two weeks or so, I’ve gotten no updates on TFB if I use my Nexus7 tablet (which is realy my go-to for checking TFB on work breaks).

It’s perfectly fine on the computer.

  • Ben Warren

I was experiencing those same problems, usually fixed by hitting the refresh button.

Not seeing those problems anymore. Thanks!

  • Blake

Captain Morgan’s Cannon was the last one I saw for about a week.

The fact that it consistently said “posted 33 minutes ago” days later clued me in that I probably needed to do a manual page refresh or delete some cookies or something. shift-reload was all it needed…

Thanks again for all your efforts to keep things running smoothly & maintain such a great site.

  • Gabe

I’m still having troubles, clicking the link in this article takes me to the home page however just putting the address into my browser is still pulling up the Captain Morgan link as the newest post.

  • Rondelly

Still having problems. My browser is stuck on the Mr. Silencer is back post from 4/22. It has been this way for a couple of weeks.

  • Marcus

I am still having problems on my iPad w/Google search engine. When I bring up TFB it goes to the article on Marines training in Finland (from mid April).
