Ammo Prices: 4/18/2014

ammo

Fourth week of prices. My intention was to generate trending graphs this week, but as I started playing with the data I realized this post would become hideously huge.

So what I would like the reader base to do is to determine what graphs/trends would be most useful and/or interesting. As of right now we are tracking 42 vendors, 9 calibers, and 2 lot sizes. Against those 3 vectors, we have the prices by date.

We could do average price per round per caliber by vendor. Or trend lines of prices by lot size by caliber by vendor. Really anything using the aforementioned vectors.

So, what do you want to see? Post your requests in the comments (if what you want is already there, please “up vote” it rather than duplicate it). I will start with the 2 most popular ideas next week and see how that goes.

We have also included the raw data so you can run your own trends: WeeklyAmmoPrices20140418.csv

Tom is a former Navy Corpsman that spent some time bumbling around the deserts of Iraq with a Marine Recon unit, kicking in tent flaps and harassing sheep. Prior to that he was a paramedic somewhere in DFW, also doing some Executive Protection work between shifts. Now that those exciting days are behind him, he has embraced his inner “Warrior Hippie” and assaults 14er in his sandals and beard, or engages in rucking adventure challenges while consuming craft beer. To fund these adventures, he writes medical software and builds websites and mobile apps. His latest venture is as one of the founders of IronSights.com; a search engine for all things gun related. He hopes that his posts will help you find solid gear that will survive whatever you can throw at it–he is known (in certain circles) for his curse…ahem, ability…to find the breaking point of anything.

Honestly I just want to be able to have ammo shipped to my state again. I had only just discovered gunbot a couple months before NY banned shipping ammo.

    • Marcus

You can have it shipped to an FFL for a fee, usually $10-20.

  • Paul Smith

It would be nice if you could make the names of the suppliers in the table links to their web sites but I’m lazy. It looks good as you did it.

    • Doc Rader

I will add that to the next week’s post.

  • Limonata

Can I email someone the spreadsheet I have worked up that includes graphs using your data?

    • Doc Rader

Sure. tom.r at thefirearmblog dot com

  • Steve Truffer

Could we get a stock-market-like note of whether the price is an increase/decrease (and how much) compared to last week’s?
    ex.
    ————9mm
    xammo .25 (-0.02)

    • Doc Rader

It is on the radar. I’m thinking of a colored arrow (up or down) based on the last recorded price per round at that vendor (rather than the absolute change) just because the table is already tight on horizontal space.

  • SpecOpsBunny

Here is a sample of some data. What i did was got an average ammo price from vendors 5 random vendors with 4 dates of data for 500 rounds of ammo. Did it for .22lr, 40, 223, and 9mm.

    • SpecOpsBunny

From this data (hard to make any conclusions with so few data points) it looks like most everything except 9mm is trending downwards in price.

      • Doc Rader

Very cool! Thanks for playing around with this. My biggest hold up with doing the graphs is to come up with useful measures.

Ideally I’m thinking of a price trend of caliber at vendors.

I’m all about the free market, but it would be interesting to see if vendors that are consistently higher will start bringing prices more in line with the rest. Or how sharply scarcity changes the curves. Or if during manufactured crises in the media we see a sudden spike across vendors.

        • NotoriousAPP

I agree. I think the greatest benefit to this could be forcing the sellers price down as they compete for business. Of course with the supply chain being what it is now I don’t think all the sellers have the luxury of lowering price and covering their costs.

  • Anonymous

You have .308 listed as $482.99 for 1000 under Midway USA. Although I wish that were the cause, it’s actually $482.99 for 500.

    • Doc Rader

Doh! My apologies. I compiled this pretty late Thursday night and didn’t spot check the final data export…

  • Christopher Riddle

I’m only glad that I don’t need to pay these onerous prices!

Has anyone else had any shipping problems with Alliance ammunitiom?
I have been waiting for my order to show up and can’t get a response from them thru email, this monday will be two weeks since receiving a comfirmed shipped email, could,nt find a phone # on their site or maybe I missed it, anyone have it?
Love the blog and thanks for the work you guys do.

    • Doc Rader

Alliance has been pretty vocal on the past couple of posts here–I imagine this is a good forum to reach them. The have a pretty good rep on GunBroker as far as communications: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewUserFeedback.aspx?User=2209153

Last week they did say they were undergoing an inspection with the Denton Fire Marshall though–maybe that is the cause of the delay.

On their site they do indicate that they are an 06 FFL. You should be able to do a lookup at the ATF site for their current information–this needs to be kept current for them to maintain their FFL, and should include a voice phone. The page is: https://www.atf.gov/content/firearms/firearms-industry/listing-FFLs and you can get XLS or TXT versions of the list.

  • vfrtower

Sir…that is a ton of work and a huge task you have undertaken. I appreciate your effort. Just a quick question…

Are you pricing one brand and particular type of round within a caliber? Or, are you jumping from one brand to another based on what’s available at a supplier?

    • Doc Rader

It is entirely the cheapest price for the lot size of a caliber at a vendor. I’m not tracking case material, grains, brand, etc. While it would be possible to do so (and as a data geek the information would be pretty interesting), it does take a while to compile and enter the data.

Additionally, displaying tables of that many vectors would quickly become unwieldy (would I then display the same grids, except brass or steel case, etc).

I’m definitely open to suggestions, though.

This was some research I was already doing on my own (though not for this number of vendors and calibers) as I like to buy bulk and am not as picky about what I feed my guns.

  • BattleshipGrey

Perhaps it’s asking too much, but would it be possible to somehow graph the difference of these current prices against the pre-panic prices of Nov. 2012? Or the difference of the panic prices compared to current pricing. Like I said, it’s probably too much work and relies on documented prices for past months/years. But it would be interesting.
Considering how widely used TFB is, I’m hoping this type of article brings some better competition for cheaper prices.

  • Lanette Atkins

Thanks for all the effort required to put this together. I was wondering if you could indicate whether brass and reloadable. This is particularly relevant to me with 7.62 X 39 which is generally steel. I know you are listing lowest bulk price for each caliber and may be too much. If too much would appreciate any input you or others have into places that are best to purchase 7.62X39 reloadable in bulk. Thanks.

  • Alliance Ammunition

UPDATE – Ammo Fast is pulling a fast one. They gave you an item at $62.49 but is not what is linked to at all. This is ‘bait and switch’ and I don’t find integrity in that regard. Amm Fast true price is $66.99 and has been since just after the launch of this week’s post. Might I add for those who are curious on ours, we do offer products as what we list them as – we still have 22LR in stock, some for only $25! We even have CCI Blazer Brass 350ct Bulk for $99 and the hard to find 380ACP 88gr JHP Bulk Packs too! Thank all of you for your business, we appreciate it much and thank you Tom! God Bless America!

    • Doc Rader

A number of the vendor’s information is harvest rather than sent from the vendor themself. So, in Ammo Fast’s case, their prices may very well have changed from the time of harvest until posting.

I don’t think they are pulling a fast one; just the data, as soon as published, is automatically stale.

Some vendors, like yourself, send an updated price sheet prior to publish, and stick with those prices until updated or stock runs out. Thank you for updating the status of your stock here!

How about this? It can be fed by the CSV as it is updated. I tried to post a link to it, but i think discus filters links.

    • Doc Rader

That is pretty sexy actually! What does it take to update the data?

      • jmotlagh

Not much, just append a spreadsheet with the latest data and post it. The application builds the embed code. This is just a quick pass at the data, but I can build a dashboard with just about any flexibility needed. the dots on the map can even change sizes based on measures.

        • jmotlagh

I had to do a little digging to get zip codes for the map, there are a handful that are not on there because I couldnt find the zip code.

  • RSR

I think two retail prices make sense. A steel case range/surplus ammo price. And then a brass case range/surplus ammo price. Self defense ammo varies considerably in both personal preferences and price. By looking just at ball/FMJ/range ammo, that’s where most of us do our most shooting and mostly shoot the same… The cheapest per round/quantity at type for each of the various vendors. Ideally, you’d compare the same same item, but that’d add a lot of work to your tracking.
OR even better, if someone had/could provide wholesale prices quarterly, biannually, or even annually for all the major ammunition manufacturers that would be awesome for us to actually see who is/isn’t price gouging and make our patronage decisions accordingly.
